As I've said before, buying a movie ticket, a toy, a home video copy doesn't extend rights to the whole.
You liked the films? Great! So did I. Where they perfect? No. But I enjoyed them at the time.
Nothing Lucas does to the films magically erase the experiences of those versions from reality and time.
I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again. We made him and we gave him the money to make his precious saga. Without us he is nothing. Its called respect, and he has none of it for the people that made him the rich man he is. He isn't obligated to do anything, but he sould want to out of respect for the people who paid to see his films.

You don't seem to get it. Artists are generally humble, and its because they live and die by their fans. Without fans an artist is nothing more than a homeless person going nowhere in life. Art without someone to appreciate it is worthless. What have we gotten in return these last 26 years for our appreciation? Spit in our face is what.

If you understood anything about art you would understand this. Film is art and if you strip away its studios and mega millionaire finances it is no different than any other art. It must live and die by its fans. We created Lucas with our dedication and our money so I don't gove a flying **** what he is obligated or not obligated to do. He should want to give back to us. Out of common courtesy.

I doubt he feels bad at all. See the "Han Shot First" T-Shirt he wore during filming of KotCS.

Why? People buy the garbage anyway.

It doesn't change those memories or the original experiences. So it's a rather silly question to be honest.

Good for her. Shes doing the right thing by defending her father. You people know that George Lucas and his daughter are human beings right?
Just checking...

Considering people have Twittered comments her way about hoping her father dies so they can get the OT, I don't think everyone really does remember that. Hell, just a page or two ago here we had someone post "She should worry more about losing weight" in respone to the news about Twitter.

Exactly. James Cameron, Ridley Scott, William Friedkin, they all get it. They've released all versions of their films several times over. The benchmark for multi-cut releases are the Alien Anthology and the Blade Runner Ultimate Collector's set. Those are filmmakers who really do appreciate their fans. Lucas does nothing but figuratively spit in our faces at every turn. It's a real shame.

I just hope all those fans out there, who claim that Lucas can do whatever he wants with the movies because he owns them, doesn't say another word whenever a studio hacks up a movie. Because George wasn't the director or ESB or ROTJ, no matter how much revisionism goes into the history.

For a good read, I would recommend Skywalking. Its a pretty quick book and it really talks about the collaboration that went into these movies, and Lucas' energy that caused them to be created. IF Kasdan and Lucas had originally wanted Vader to say "NOOOO" they could have written it that way.

yes, its real. That scene is forever ruined for me now. I'll now hear "Nooo......NOOOOOOOOO!" even when watching the OT version on DVD. Lucas has officially destroyed the best scene in all of ROTJ....possibly the entire saga.

Just like the Blu-Rays will be a huge sales success. The fan rage isn't going to change anything.
But there are some differences to keep in mind.

Back in 1997, the changes were a fresh, new thing. Sure, there were some people crying foul about them, but the controversy wasn't quite to the extent of what it would eventually become. Of course a major theatrical re-release of the Star Wars Trilogy was going to be success regardless of changes.

Plus at that time, the whole idea of the original versions having been released for (supposedly) "the last time" wasn't even quite the issue that it eventually became. At the time, the primary mainstream format was still VHS, which at that time was the first and really only primary, dominant home video format that had ever existed. People who wanted the Star Wars original versions likely already had them from 2 years prior when they were released for "the last time". And home video/theater enthusiasts had them on Laserdisc. So when the Special Editions later came out on VHS, they weren't much of a "threat" to people since they had recent releases of the original versions on the same formats that were still available at the time. The DVD format launched during 1997, but at that point it was barely a blip on the radar to the general public, so it was more or less a non-issue.

Fast forward to 2004. The DVD format was now the dominant format. The backlash had grown, and the internet had grown as well. But no, neither were enough to stop the Star Wars Trilogy release on DVD from being successful. Heck, some people jumped on board with DVD because of Star Wars.

While many more people were using the internet, it still wasn't quite like it is today. To really get news on something like a Star Wars DVD release, you more or less has to make it a point to search for it. It wasn't going to just come to you.

And in 2004, just prior to the release, while we knew that the DVDs wouldn't contain that the original versions, the concept of additional changes was more speculation than anything. Would Lucas make even further changes to the movies? In some respects it seemed logical (i.e. replacing the crappy looking CGI Jabba from the 1997 ANH SE with something that better resembles the CGI Jabba from TPM), but we really didn't know much until just prior to the release when reviews started going up about it. I don't recall that info leaking nearly as far in advance of that release as this info has regarding the Blu-Ray release. Plus while the reviews did make mention of the noticeable changes (i.e. Jabba, The Emperor in ESB, Hadyen in ROTJ), I don't think the technical errors were quite as well known just yet.

Plus it was equally plausible at the time, for anyone lacking any specific, official information to the contrary, for people to assume that the DVDs might just contain the exact 1997 Special Editions. While Lucas did change the films that one time in 1997 for the 20th anniversary THEATRICAL re-release, there was no real precedent set for constant, ongoing tinkering of this nature (I'm not talking about more minor changes like adding the Ep IV title to ANH), and since this was just another home video release as opposed to a theatrical release, many people may not have assumed further changes were even coming, and therefore had no real reason to look into the possibility before buying. (Keep in mind that I don't deny that a large part of the public may not have noticed or cared about the changes, but more still may have noticed than I think you often give them credit for).

So, the general public was largely ignorant of the issues, and the DVDs sold very well. Sure, the backlash from the people who were noticing the problems was churning quickly there after.... but on places like internet message boards and things of that nature. Not places that the "average joe" was going to go out of their way to look.

But now it's 2011, and today is an entirely different situation in a number of ways. Social Networking throws information at us left and right that we might not have otherwise obtained. More people get their news online these days than did 7 years ago. And fairly major online new sites have already picked up on these stories. So, this information, and the negativity that it is generating, is more likely to be noticed by the "average joe" today than back in 2004. And amongst this info, in addition to the backlash against the new changes like Vader's "Nooooo!" in ROTJ, the fact that many of the color timing issues and light saber problems from 2004 still exist is bound to get into the mix here and there, too. The problems and issues are far more likely to be pointed out to a bigger portion of the public than was possible 7 years ago. Not to mention that since we now have 2 previous sets of revisions (1 being from a previous home video release), there is more of a precedent set for more ongoing changes that people may keep an eye out for than would have back in 2004.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm sure the Blu-Ray is still going to sell rather well. I'm not suggesting that it's going to be some huge flop of a release or anything. But I do think that the backlash this time around has much more potential to put a bigger "dent" into the sales than the previous backlashes have. By no means enough to make this release unsuccessful, but still a decent amount more than the previous times... possibly enough that the amount of money lost would still hurt to at least some degree.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. Circumstances have changed in a number of ways for a number of reasons. You can't just assume that what is going to happen now, under today's circumstances, is going to be an exact carbon copy of 2004.

I only have this to say... FU Lucas, pre-order canceled..

I've tolerated the changes over the years but this is just too much... I just can't listen this ball-less Vader saying nooos through my precious speakers.
