Nobody should want everyone to have the same opinion, even if it's having to do with a film that seems to be reviled by the majority. We're all different. Just get over it.
It doesn't always come down to nostalgia though. I saw the originals in the theater back in the day. Still prefer TPM.

Well, I guess anybody who thinks The Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie should know what good acting

The problem is, while the acting was hammy in the original three, the prequels are wooden by comparision. I'll take hammy any day over wooden. At least it's human.

I didn't say it was all nostalgia. But certainly, when you see a movie in your teenage years - it's always going to play a part.

One thing's for sure - Qui-Gon is still my absolute favorite Jedi. (Episode I made me the Liam Neeson fan I am today. )

I saw the original films in the first release.

I would rate:

A new hope 1
Empire 2
episode 3 as 3
ROTJ as 4
episode 1 as 5
episode 2 as 6

I like star wars. liked it more when I was a kid. I was really into it. then I found other movies to like even more. I honetly dont mind the changes. I know that some fans are deeply offend or hurt by the changes. I mostly endorse director cuts/special editions like the abyss, daredevil, lotr:two towers ee etc etc. the only extended cut that I didnt care much for was king kong 2005 remake. I prefer the theatre verison. I never seen so much contempt for a movie series like star wars. with the fans both going back and fourth about the changes or not. they are just movies. maybe some people need to chill out. no one is forcing you to buy the sets. if you dont like the changes then dont get it. its all very simple.

about batman. I prefer the tim burton films more then nolan. with the burton films I could beleive in his world of a batman, but not so much for nolan. that is the problem with the dark knight. everyone expects all comic books movies to be that. that is not the case for all of the comic book related. you sometimes have to beleive in things that might be beliable. like superman or hulk etc etc.

To me, the story contained in the Prequels have always been far more rich and layered than the one from the OT.

The story in the OT is very simple and black and white. Where as the PT has more depth.

I like TPM to an extent, but not because it has an engrossing story, I don't fool myself into thinking that it makes the least bit of narrative sense, or has any measure of "depth". I could be wrong.

Beast you are making yourself an easy target because you are obviously trying to get a reaction out of people wiht your posts and egg arguments on, your opinion doesn't make you a troll, but your behavior does. So don't start the fire and keep feeding the flames, then play the victim card when you get burned by saying "but its just my opinion".

Qui-Gon was a great character. It's a shame he died. And even worse to .... Darth Maul. Meh.

Unlike the OT, TPM really gives us a amazing look at the whole Star Wars Universe. Not just small corners of it.

Return of the Jedi just has a special place in my heart that elevates it over the other films in the OT.
The whole relationship between Luke and Vader especially spoke to me in a way none of te others do.
Galaxy spanning? Lol its about taxation of one planet! Yep, that right there is awesome science fanssty. Really acreams excitement.

I'm rather shocked that it's such a widespread affliction on this board. Film buffs should know better.

EDIT (because I don't want to make any more posts on this subject): Obviously there are absolute facts in the world that exist that can't be disputed, regardless of people's opinions - but no such thing really exists when it comes to film criticism. Films, like all art, are subjective. They can't be defined absolutely. That's the beauty of it.

But Jar Jar really sucked though, don't you agree? Isn't it a shame he didn't meet a horrible end?

Sorry to inform you, but I'm not. I'm just genuinely offering my opinion and discussing with other fans.

Unless you're now going to claim my 15 theatrical viewings of TPM was an elaborate scheme of some sort.

You also seem to think that I'm "fooling myself" by liking TPM and recognizing these things.

Welcome to the reality of Star Wars fans. Not all of them see the same things and care about the same aspects.

Clearly you missed the parts of the film that don't take place on Naboo.

Wait til you get the Blu-Ray, and watch the film again.

Beast...please stop posting so much. I respect your opinions but flaunting them endlessly and challenging anyone who disagrees with you is tiring and derails the thread constantly. Please...stop.

Yeah, don't forget the several minutes of Galactic C-SPAN. That's not on Naboo!

Yup! Same here. Although, I prefer ROTS over all the others.

Hope to have my BD's on Monday. EPIII will be the first viewed!

Right.

And two of the prequels have a significant amount of screen time take place on Tatooine, where two of the Originals already gave us enough of that.

It sure turns out to be one really small galaxy.

Clearly you missed the parts of ESB that take place on Hoth, Dagobah, and Bespin. Wait til you get the blu-ray. You'll realize TPM is no more galaxy spanning than ESB. If that's your argument for why TPM is your favorite it is a weak one.
