Thumbs down

There aren't enough faces or palms in the world for this page of this thread.

Orson Welles is rolling in his grave right now. Coppola is loading his rifle.

Okay, we've reached an impasse, and I respect that. I don't get you, I think you have horrible taste, but I respect that you like what you like and you stand by your convictions.

If you guys don't stop arguing with Beast and realize that his viewpoint (which I respect and acknowledge) is much too far from yours to reach a middle ground, I'm going to hurl myself into the Great Pit of Carkoon.

Well now, C3PO is kinda annoying. Not Jar Jar annoying. In fact, Jar Jar set the bar for annoying at an all time high. 3PO is just mildly so.

Refocusing the discussion, I'm a Canadian expat living in S.Korea, and I decided to pay the shipping costs on Amazon.ca to have the Complete Saga shipped to me.

Movie box sets in Korea are always overpriced (it's still like $90 for The Matrix Trilogy on blu-ray, for example). Plus I wanted the packaging to be in English.

I checked my local record shop, and it looks like they might not even get the complete saga box set, but the two separate trilogies only. Strange.

It's funny. When that episode of Famly Guy popped up, I thought Seth McFarlane was somehow trolling me.

Funny to learn that he actually feels much the same way about The Godfather judging by audio commentary for that episode.

I would defend the honor of inception and the dark knight right now, but I don't want to get banned right now. I'll just say that probably the reason some of you might find them inferior to some of nolans other films might be due to the popularity of those said films: with a unconscious desire to be different. These films are not overrated. And batman begins and the dark knight do not have the same theme. Goodnight.

When you do.... can you check to see if it has a beak, or if it's just a hole in the ground?

I was a Canadian expat living in Bangkok for 9 years. It's not always easy to get ahold of North American products in Asia. I mean, it got better over time, but it was a pain in the ass in 1998.

I had to order copies of The Godfather movies and Kill Bill 1/2 because the Thai versions had Thai subtitles over the Italian and Japanese portions. Faaaaaaaaail.

On the topic of price points though, I saw the Matrix trilogy in HMV here in Canada last week for $90. Maybe it isn't that much different for every title?

I use to like the Phantom Menace when I was a kid. In a sense, I still do, but only from the "so bad it's good" viewpoint, or the "guilt pleasure" viewpoint.

When I discovered films in High School, because there's a difference when it comes to enjoying movies and enjoying "films", I started to see how bad the entire film was. Parts of the film that were thrilling for me, had now become so very dull. And I could hear just how half-assed parts of the script were. I can go on, but I guess the thing that really got me was the lack of any real adventure.

Frakkin mess all I can say.

By the way, Beast, do you like ANY films made before the 1970's or 60's? If you do, let us know.

How about the original The Day the Earth Stood Still?

Sucks to hear. Especially weird if they don't get the boxset. But hopefully it all works out and you get it in a timely manner.

I just wanted to thank you for posting that TPM review, I'm watching it now and its hilarious but makes some very excellent points, just the comparison between the opening shots of TPM and ANH speaks volumes. You are my new friend.

It still doesn't change my opinion of TPM though, its still about a 2.5/5 for me, it just addresses the things that have always bothered me.

Amazon.ca has been really, really good with shipping to me here in Korea. 2-4 days max. Got the LOTR EE set right on time.

Not worried about when I'll get it, but it does cost me a pretty penny to get it.

I love the recent Nolan Batmans. They have a dark brooding about them that fits. I still like the first Burton Batman and ONLY Phiffer's performance as Catwoman in the second, but they are a little too rooted in Burton's quirky gothic comedy style to match the newer ones. Beast probably likes the Adam West Batman TV series and thinks it's superior. POW! BAM!

Maybe I should just ask the Mods if I can start my own....

"Discuss Films With Beast" thread on the Movies board. Might be fun.

Anyway, yes... I love a lot of pre-60's and 70's films. And the original TDTESS is amazing. I know some people hate the whole Anti-Nukes message of the original film. But I works pretty well. I love those classic Sci-Fi films that are veiled ways of addressing topics like that. Much like how the originl Twilight Zone series explored a lot of issues in a way that allowed them to slip by those who wouldn't allow explorations of such things in more obvious ways.

Sorry... you got me off on a tangent about things I love about classic Sci-Fi.

Yeah, despite my undying love for the RedLetterMedia people and their awesome approach to film criticism, I'm not a full-blown PT "hater", like some people are. They're not unwatchable to me, but I can clearly see the flaws, and the Plinkett reviews really help to highlight everything that is wrong with those films. They not only address questions that I had been asking since the first time I saw TPM (which, I was still young then, 18, and drinking the kool-aid a bit), but they really help to broaden my perspective on how basic film theory can be approached.

And yes, they are absolutely hilarious. I love their brand of humor. Morbid, strange, brilliant.

I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as I do. Be sure to watch all three.

I think the PT has earned the hate it gets for a lot of very absurd moments, but like I said, I'm indifferent.

The Empire Strikes Back isn't just my favorite Star Wars film, but it's one of my favorite films period. I tend to separate it from the rest of the Star Wars saga and enjoy it as a fan of great cinema and not a Star Wars fan.

No. I prefer the original Burton Batman film. But the Adam West Batman movie and series is a close second.
