There is no way a 90.00+ dollar set because the biggest seller, not even Star Wars.
That's what they said last time.

That is what I think as well. I know that it's possible some will still buy it even after saying they won't but the stuff that as been going on the last few days make's me think a lot of fans are walking away from it once and for all.

Hey guys. I've been thinking of trying to get my hands on the original unaltered widescreen versions of Star Wars on laserdisc from eBay or what have you.

I found these ones, which I believe are both pre- 1997 and in widescreen, but are their any difference between the Definitive Collection and these ones?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-LA...#ht_500wt_1287

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Em...#ht_500wt_1287

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Re...#ht_500wt_1156

Because the Definitive box set is so much more expensive and I'm not sure why, and the single ones seem cheap enough. So does anyone know if they are the exact same discs?

Mainstream fans don't even know or care about the changes.

I never had these, I really don't know what they are like. If you are wondering, they are not Special Edition however, they are original version. I just do not know about the quality of the images and sound.

Trying to end this pointless debate, here´s again what Kevin Smith said about the uproar that´s going on on the interwebs. Pretty well put.

"As a guy who saw the first one in the movie theatres. I literally saw Return Of The Jedi 1983 at the Middletown Multiplex in the big theatre - 500 seater it was… As a dude who was there all I can say is this: "Who gives a shit?" Can you imagine somebody being mad at this? It's his movie. It will never be perfect to him. He is the craftsman he says "It's not finished. I'll change it." His thinking is unconventional. It irritates geeks and stuff like that. There were moments when it irritated me. But at the same time you gotta appreciate what a visionary brought to the movies in the first place. If the visionary´s like: "Look, I'm not done. There's more. I can take it and change it every time the medium changes or every time technology changes" - You gotta respect that! There are changes being made like Greedo shooting first where I'm like "Are you out of your mind?" They are his characters he can do what he wants with. This one isn't even egregious. It's like, well, he threw a sound-effect in. But you should see people online: "He's doing it again! Raping our childhood, this Lucas!" It's crazy! It's not for you! He's making it for your kids, my kids everyone who hasn't seen Return Of The Jedi before and isn't gonna know that this yell wasn't there the first time. And if nobody told me I doubt I'd ever had known. I remember seeing the scene and they cut to Vader and he just stares as the Emperor is doing this to his kid, and they do that two times and then finally he gets up… And it always felt like there was an emotive that was just missing. Throw it in! Im all for it!"

You can only push people so far. I backed out of the set once the news was released. I will gladly watch my LD, VHS tapes non anamorphic DVD's and "other" editions and be happy with them. I am beyond mad at this point, as I have reached that "I dont give a S*** place regarding these films. I may purchase the PT set though as I really could care less about the changes as they would make those films better.

The way I see it, most people here would not act this way in real life. The Internet give's you sort of a chance to act over the top, a drama queen of sort. It's easier to compare someone to the most brutal dictator in history or some sort of book burner when it's done with the anonyma of the Internet. I am willing to bet most people here would not be saying such thing on a face to face conversation (I hope so anyway).
I think there is just a whole lot of disappointment that lead to some very nasty reactions and I know its a turn off for you as you view these films as entertainment, which is exactly what they are. Some take it a lil bit more seriously.

But Let's face it, Lucasfilm did get a LOT of hopes up by saying "we fixed things!" when in reality that appears to not really be the truth (insert 'certain POV pun here). Lucas then adding in two needless lines to one of the OT's most powerful moments (imo) really was insult to injury. For that select group, they will react harshly when they feel they have been lied to and then given the middle finger immediately there after.

I don't think there is a soul here whom did not anticipate some changes. I welcome the Ewoks blinking, that is nice! But taking a scene that is built with QUIET emotion and altering it to having the subtley of a sledghammer...yeah, that was the 'line in the sand Donny!" I am voicing my disappointment with my wallet though.

Anyway, I know your feelings (I read everyone of your posts typically, prob something to do with your Hepburn avatar...lol, yeah I dig her) and I hope you enjoy the set (Now to quote by boy KennyK...lol..) "in full HD with 6.1 sound!"

Maybe then, I could have swallowed this "one change too far" enough to buy the set.

A big part of me wishes Lucas would just leave well enough alone so that he could move on to some new venture. I'd really like to see him direct some other projects. I don't think much of his writing nowadays, but I'd love to see what he could do directing-wise with fresh material.
The fact that this guy has been resting on his laurels for the better part of 30 years while his contemporaries like Spielberg and Scott have been continually making new things says a lot about his creative process.

He should try making a new movie at some point.

True but also a lot of mainstream fans are not even on Blu-ray, most of them are still on DVD, I wonder how much of an impact they will have.

In any case we will know more in two weeks on what is going to happen with this release. It may well be I will have to eat my words

I got suspended from AVS for suggesting that Bill Hunt has become apart of the studio spin-machine, and is no longer the lone sane voice for film releases on the internet. I didn't mean it in a mean way.
I still respect the man greatly.
They locked me out of the Star Wars Thread PERMANENTLY.
I have NO idea why AVS is so protective of Bill Hunt. The guy is a hack and has been since at least the Blu-ray HD-dvd debate. I had a post deleted for mentioning that Digitalbits provides inaccurate information which they claimed was a personal attack on Bill Hunt. I have had plenty of personal attacks against me on AVS that no one has done anything about. I don't complain about personal attacks, I am capable of defending myself and keeping my self-respect . But it seems a double standard; ridiculing almost anyone else is open game.

As for the hatred towards Lucas that others are deriding, I think it stems from a very simple reaction. If you are of a certain age, when you watch the Star Wars OT, you are not just enjoying them for the films themselves, but for the nostalgia. The films take you back to a different time and place, back to that magical first experience.

By messing with the films, Lucas is messing with that nostalgia. So he is introducing a jarring change to the way that the movies were first experienced, and thus changing the original feeling of watching the movies. It is a very discordant feeling.

(Although the changes may seem superficially minor, for many people, the films are practically memorized, so even small changes are jarring.)
That is a very good way to put it. There are many movies that I saw as a child and the nostalgia is part of the experience, just as the story is. I rememeber seeing ET when I was very young, along with Jurassic Park, Goldeneye, etc. I was introduced to the fantasy genre with the LOTR series so it is frustrating to see the green tint added to the BD release.

Along these lines, one trend that is starting to annoy me is the idea of only having the director's or extended cuts available on BD, but not the theatrical cuts. Nixon was a film I saw when I was 14 on DVD- it was a powerful experience that marked a transition for me to more serious film fare. However, the Blu-ray only has the director's cut, which is simply terrible in my mind. In many ways, film is more about an experience as it is simply about the story. Many books can transport you into another world through your imagination, but a film can combine story with sounds and images in a unique way. Lucas's constant alterations ruin this experience for us. I didn't see Star Wars until the '97 re-release. Even then, I knew I was watching something special. I still remember being wowed by Vader's sacrifice and his unmasking at the end of the film. That has been ruined for me now, and I didn't even grow up with the originals! I am just upset at the disrespect Lucas has for his fans and the concept of historical preservation of films.

btw, I'm liking the addition of the dug going down the stairs in Jaba's palace.

However I don't understand the addition of Vader saying Nooo when throwing the Emperor down the shaft. To me it sounds like he is realizing what he is doing and regretting it. Making the point moot with him restoring the balance back to the force

The deception over the fixes to color timing and lightsabers is my final straw. Inexcusable and downright lazy, and then to publicly LIE about having fixed everything that was complained about in regards to the color timing and lightsabers.... disgraceful. Absolutely disgraceful.
