I can't believe we are only 2 weeks exactly away from having this in our collections! When Blu-ray first came out it seemed like it would be forever before we got these and now here we are about to finally own them.

I'd like to finally get my thoughts out there on the whole situation as well. For some background, I was born in '79 and grew up with all things Star Wars as a kid and have continued my love for Star Wars all the way through today in adulthood. I will always love Star Wars and it also brings back so many awesome memories me and my brother had growing up with it. My soon to be 4 year old daughter has now taken a liking to Star Wars as well and it has been awesome thus far to be able to share the Star Wars experience with her. The last 3 nights in a row we have watched the original trilogy: ANH, ESB, then ROTJ. Also, it wasn't just that it was the original trilogy BUT it was actually the Unaltered Original Trilogy that I have on DVD from the 2006 release. Now, this wasn't really any deliberate attempt by me to actually show her the unaltered Original trilogy first but it just so happened I was going to be watching those anyways as I hadn't seen them in forever and was wanting to watch them before the blu-ray's released.

Also, by viewing it this way she is seeing the saga unfold as I and millions of others did growing up by watching episodes 4,5,and 6 first and then seeing the prequels. I had gone back and forth with myself on how to show them to her for the first time and I decided I'd like for her to see them how I did and to see her reactions to some of the reveals and things like that. It was totally worth it last night when we watched ESB and she got the "I am your father" scene. As soon as it happened, she grabbed her galactic heroes figures of vader and c-3po and was making vader tell 3po that "I am your father". LOL.

Anyway, all thats beside the point. Back to the topic at hand of the blu-rays and the changes. I grew up with the Unaltered Original Trilogy BUT had no objections really to the '97 special editions or the 2004 dvd editions except for a few things like I preferred to have Han shoot first. It wasn't ever a big deal to me though. As a matter of fact, I just recently got the 2006 dvd's that have the UOT on there. I only got those last year for Christmas. I bought the 2004 dvd's at midnight on release and had thought it would be a waste to buy the same thing over again. It wasn't until last year I started thinking it would be cool to have the UOT so I asked for that set for Christmas. Even after getting them though I just skimmed through the scenes that had since been altered and never watched them all the way through until the past 3 nights. It is a nice feeling to have them available if I want to watch them though.

I knew there would be changes to the blu-rays but I wasn't expecting something as big as the vader No, Noooooo lines. I also don't really like Obi-Wan's Krayt dragon call now either and I didn't like it much on the 2004 dvd either. I had no problem with the original yell. That's not a huge deal though. At first I couldn't believe the Vader No's that were added and I found myself for the first time becoming mad at the constant tinkering of the movies. However, after watching the scene over and over and over probably 10-15 times now, It doesn't really bother me much anymore. Infact, and I know I'm gonna get alot of flak for this, but I kinda like it now. It is ironic considering the last few times when I was watching this on the 2004 dvd's I found myself wondering why during this scene Vader didn't ever say anything or make any noises. And here now we have this change on the blu-ray. Don't start blaming me for this change though! I would have to be really strong with the force to think that and then have George hear me through my thoughts and add it. This change and the others don't change the overall story, theme, feel, of the movies to me and that stuff is the reasons I love Star Wars.

Sorry for the long rant, but I have kept all this bottled up since the now infamous leak of the changed Vader scene and other scenes. My emotions have run the gamut all the way from dumbfounded, depressed, mad, to oh well, stress free, and excitement for the 16th.

I DO think the UOT should be released on blu-ray. If they would just release those then pretty much everyone would be happy because those that just want the originals how they grew up with them and no changes can have them and those that grew up with the special editions or like it when changes are made can also have their versions. For someone like me I would buy both versions. I can tell you I would mostly watch the newer revised versions but would like to be able watch the UOT if I wanted to on blu-ray if for nothing else but nostalgic purposes.

I've said it before - I think the ZonaDVD screencaps look incredible despite their size, but that's because I'm looking for contrast changes more than anything. And colour changes. They seemed to be representative of that, at least for me. and I could certainly see a huge improvement in fine detail.
And I agree, that I am just as interested in contrast and color also. So far those screen caps look good. It is hard to see EE, DNR and grain issues with caps that small.

I would also like to find pics from someone that would prove they have the discs in hand.

The PQ (720p rip) is very good! I wasn't expecting it to be bad... but this surpassed my expectations, I can only imagine how good it would look in 1080p.

So far, I've just watched the first 10 minutes, the Tantive IV interior is snow white, some were saying it was blue (on the DVD?), I can assure you it is as white as can be.

September 16th,

Did anyone stop to think about this for one second. That the UOT of Star Wars on blu ray will look really bad and fake with the dark marks around all the special effects from that time not to mention all the mistakes in them.
And that is why Lucas changed them.

I think everybody would agree with that, and would end the debate. It's weird to see anybody defend these new changes at all, but if he released the original and this new thing, it would make everybody happy.

I'm guessing in 2018, we'll either another batch of changes or finally get the UOT.

With that said, TPM puppet Yoda was scary as fu**!

But that is how many people here experienced the films in the theatres in the 70's/80's

It would just be nice to have them as an option, instead of only having the SEs available to buy in HD. Sure, not everyone would buy them, but I know I would.

I think the CGI in the SE looks more "fake" than the models and matte paintings in the UOT ever will.

1337 means Leet, which I guess is something cool, since people are like "That is so leet" in my neck of the woods. Kinda weird. LOL

What really burns me about so many "apologist" attitudes is that they don't seem to care about the preservation of film history. The way audiences saw the films in '77, '80, & '83 should be preserved for future audiences to experience.

I honestly wouldn't care in any way, shape, or form what changes Lucas made to the movies - IF he properly maintained and released, on each new format (laserdisc ports don't count), the films that made history. It makes me very sad that history is so easily written over.

Those really bad and fake effects won an Oscar, you know.

I would absolutely love to have them in my collection.

I couldn't agree more. I do enjoy watching the "CGI enhanced" scenes from the Special Editions, but watching the SEs on anamorphic DVD or in 720p (soon to be 1080p) makes me wish that I could watch the UOT films at the same level of quality.

If Lucas wants to put out the SEs with the "latest and greatest" changes every few years, so be it, but it would satisfy a lot of long-time fans if he could manage to release the UOT just once for every home video format.

So how fast is amazon's 2 day shipping for you all. The release date is the 16, but it says the estimated delivery date to be Sept. 20??!

Everyone just needs to accept the fact that Lucas will never let the UOT see the light of day. Forget all the reasons he gives (cost to restore, not his true vision, etc.). Forget all the real reasons we know (stubbornness, denying Marcia a cut of profits, wanting to link to prequels, etc.)

If the UOT came out on blu-ray, that would be the end of buying SW on home video formats for many fans. Lucas keeps SW relevant by making changes, causing controversy, and baiting people to upgrade. Release the UOT and your sales numbers for future releases drop. Withhold the UOT and people will cave in. It's that simple.

Lock the thread.

It was saying select 2 day delivery for release date delivery. If they aren't offering that anymore than maybe they had so many orders they can't guarantee release date delivery anymore.? I just checked and it is still saying you can receive release day delivery.

Bah, I'm a little disapointed to see this image from the Blu-Ray set:

I'm not complaining about the fact that this scene is still in there. I was just hoping that they would tweak Jabba again. While this was a big improvement over the 1997 version, it still didn't quite look right to me. The animation was kind of cheap looking and a little flat, IMO. And his coloring just looks way to dark.

I was hoping he would look a bit more like Phantom Menace Jabba:

The animation on this version looks a lot better to me, and his coloring looks better, too. I know some will probably argue that TPM Jabba is out in the sunlight and ANH Jabba isn't as an explanation for the color variation, but that still doesn't quite explain it IMO. It looks like a completely different shade to me.... on that can't be accounted for by a mere lighting variance.

I really don't care about the additions, but it seems so random, and nonsensical.

Adding the Dug in Jabba's palace for example.

Wouldn't it have been much better if they replaced that god-awful blue elephant on the organ???

I still can't believe they didn't fix the lightsaber issues on the MF, when Luke first ignites it.

It's just baffling!

I'll soon see for myself, if those leaks were indeed the final versions.

I like Vader's No though, although it wasn't really necessary.

Just my 2 cents.
What?! Are you actually criticizing George Lucas in some manner?! Say it ain't so!

That's how all of the on-screen lightsaber ignitions were done in ANH.

The would film the actor holding the handle prop, then a stagehand would walk up and hand him the prop saber with the blade while the actor stayed as still as possible

then they would cut the footage of the stagehand, making the blade appear suddenly, with hopefully little movement by the actor and background shadows/objects

Yeah, but it seems like that's something that they should be able to stabilize and make look less like a jump cut with today's digital technology. That combined with the remaining color timing issues and some of the simply outdated saber effects are some fairly big problems for something that he apparently wants to looks as close to being a brand new movie as possible.

If he is going to keep tweaking the movies, this is the kind of stuff he should be focusing on as opposed to some of the more pointless crap that he seems to spend his time with. While the lack of the UOT being available would still be a thorn in many people's sides, I doubt that too many people would react negatively to updates of that nature in the most recent versions... certainly not as negatively as they have to the "Nooooooo", etc.

On a somewhat separate note, I picked this up at my local Borders store which, like all other locations, is in the process of clearing out all of the merchandise:

It's a big hardcover book that kind of chronicles the history of Star Wars, the things that lead up to it, spun off from it, etc. It's pretty cool. It starts from the early 70s and goes through 2010. It was originally $50 and was marked down to $20. So, not a bad deal. The hard cover book actually comes inside of sort of a cardboard slipcover thing. The above pick is actually of the slip cover. Below is a pic of the actual book cover:
