But in the past ten years, something changed. Fans became more cynical, argumentative, egotistical, and judgmental. Now it seems, if you simply enjoy the films, don't mind or like the alterations, and still manage to chill out and get a kick out of Star Wars, you're an "apologist" - perhaps the silliest term I've ever come across with regards to an individuals enjoyment of a piece of fiction. It seems that to be a Star Wars fan anymore, you have obsess over miniscule alterations, talk down to everyone around you, think George Lucas is some kind of evil magician out to destroy your childhood, and take everything about Star Wars deadly seriously. Where's the fun or enjoyment in that? Honestly? How is your life bettered by endlessly bickering over frames in a film? Whether a character says a single word? I'm not angry or bitter about this development. If anything, I truly pity those who get worked up over such things.

With that said, by all means argue over a single word of dialogue, a slight change of color of a lightsaber, or blinking Ewoks, or whatever the hell else you guys can find a way to ***** about. These changes don't alter the message of the films and certainly should not deter any sane individual from being able to enjoy the films as is, whether you're for the changes or not. In a couple of weeks I'm going to be watching Star Wars in HD with lossless audio. That is something I've literally been waiting for for over a decade for. You guys cancelling your pre-orders over non-sensical fanboy ramblings can choose not to all you want. I hope your content with your decision. Me, I'm gonna have lightsabers kicking my subwoofers ass for a few hours.
I never whine about minor changes, tweaks or improvements in any movie. My issue with the original Star Wars trilogy is the amount of changes and how ridiculous they are. I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan. I'm a casual fan that enjoys the movies a lot. If they would have just updated a few effects and tweaked some scenes, I'd have been fine. Hell, I could even have lived with Vadar screaming "NOOOOO" or Greedo shooting first. They lost me when they started digitally adding the new actors into the old movies. For instance, Hayden appearing at the end of ROTJ. In my opinion, that was the dumbest thing anyone could have done to any movie. It looks so cheesy and out of place.

And all these people talk about, they're just movies and why don't you shut up and enjoy them? Well, I likely will, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to talk about how utterly ridiculous I find the changes. I mean, while we're at it, why don't we go back and digitally insert new characters into movies like Citizen Kane, Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca? Oh yeah... that would be ridiculous.

At the end of the day, these are iconic movies that people love. Why do you have to tear them apart and change the whole movie? And if you wanna do that, fine. At least release the originals as well and give people a choice. It's a shame that the movie studio gave Lucas such authority over his movies back in the day. If they hadn't, all these conversations wouldn't even be happening right now.

Later he is an adolescent who is brave but impulsive, who falls in love, is torn by this new feelings, his attachement to his mother and his loyalty to the jedi and their code. I don't really see him as "whiny". Think of your first love and how it felt. To me the dialogue especially in Episode 2 is very honest and rings true. You must see it in a fatalistic "Romeo & Julia" kind of way. He dehumanised the Tusken he killed in a blind rage after his mother was killed. Only later he realized what a horrific thing he had done. And he keeps it a secret from Ob-Wan and the other Jedi... That's all very interesting stuff!
"I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men... but the women, and the children too. They're like animals! And I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them!"

Oh yes, once that 'blind rage' passed he was clearly wracked with guilt.

There's really no serious way around this: Anakin was grossly mishandled. He was supposed to be a basically decent, sympathetic character and we were supposed to actually care about his tragic fall.

Didn't quite work out that way.

I've always thought Anakin was kind of a d-bag really. That being said, I to this day was not convinced by Ep III (a movie I like btw) of his turn. It just felt forced to me and not believable.

The other thing that bothers me is I watch the Clone Wars, and my kid loves it along with a lot of kids. They like Anakin. I just don't get it. He's rude and arrogant. He's brash and consistently does not abide his orders. He's a horrible Jedi in many aspects and a bad teacher to boot.

Like someone said, Luke was a lot like his father at first as far as being whiney. Kind of why I like him, he started out as a whiney b*tch in Ep IV. The first half of Ep V he was still like that but as he started to believe in himself he became a lot stronger character. In Ep VI he is very confident, but he's not at all arrogant.

Simon Pegg isn't doing himself any favors by continuing his rants against Star Wars revisionism. Especially now that he's part of the Abrams re-imagination of Star Trek. Pegg is going to make himself look like a hypocrite.

Greedo shooting first is mild compared to the wholesale changes J.J. Abrams made to Star Trek. I'm still aghast that they blew up Vulcan.

It wouldn't surprise me if Lucas addes some dialogue to this scene as well. I think it's one of the better scenes of the PT. It works so well because there is NO dialogue.

...and then he falls into Padme's arms sobbing. Clearly, he's upset and feels guilty and disappointed in himself.

I found his ultimate turn very powerful. His fear of losing loved ones is something we can all identify with and this fear leads to his downfall in trying to control his life and those around him absolutely. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." All of this comes from the loss of his mother in this pivotal scene. I don't know if you've ever lost a parent or a loved one as a teenager, but I have and this kind of feeling, of wanting to protect and hold dearly those you love with an iron-grip, is a very real one.

His teenage years seen in AOTC feel truthful. He's nineteen years old, he's a flurry of adrenaline and hormones, raw power and emotional with little self-control...y'know, like most teenagers. He was a decent, sympathetic character who let his love and compassion turn into a fear that corrupted him completely.

what kills me is these guys who say things like, "it's just an added word, who cares??", act like that has the same effect as adding an extra step to the Emperor's throne room.

It changes the entire scene. It's not just simply "a word". Vader's body language was sufficient enough. We KNEW what he was thinking. For the last 28 years, we've known. You didn't need him to emote verbally then, and you don't need him to now. People who defend the change are rationalizing out of their undying love for Star Wars. They can't help themselves. It's akin to adding in "I'M MELLLTTTINNNNGGG!" to the Nazi at the end of Raiders Of The Lost Ark when he opens the Ark. No shit you're melting, we can see it plain as day. And no shit Vader is torn between his loyalty to the Emperor and his love for his son, we knew that as the camera shifted back and forth continously for a minute.

+1 Like I said in a earlier post when Lucas wrote the PT's he didn't think about plots at all, he just thought of one thing $ Maybe in 10 years Lucas will say the true story is about Obi wan and his failure as a teacher and redemption as a teacher

Um... there's a large difference between altering previously-existing films for the worse and only offering said versions for sale and participating in new films re-imagining a classic franchise. It's not like they're retroactively inserting lens flares into The Wrath of Khan or something like that...

For you it didn't! In the impressive garage scene he is totally wrecked with guilt!!! To me it's a complex web of emotions that lead Anakin to the Dark Side. The interesting thing is that it happens out of compassion and love basically. That's pretty unique.

If you wanna see a terrible turn to the dark side watch Elijah Wood in the climax of "Return Of The King". That scene doesn't work at all for me...

Well put. The new Star Trek films were established as an alternate reality from the get-go. It's part of the narrative. Nobody is going back and adding garbage to any of the Trek films.

Sure, and that's why Return of the King won an Oscar for best picture.

Elijah Wood's possession by the ring occurred over the course of 3 films. Or did you miss that?
