TPM - 3.0
AotC - 3.0
RotS - 4.5
ANH - 5.0
ESB - 5.0
RotJ - 4.0

RotS > RotJ

I don't see how any objective reviewer can say otherwise. The only thing wrong with RotS is a handful of cringe-inducing lines of dialogue. With RotJ, there are entire cringe-inducing scenes instead of just lines of dialogue. There are a number of scenes in RotJ that are waaay worse than anything in RotS. Including:
  • The preposterous revelation that Leia is Luke's twin sister
  • The Three's Company-esque misunderstanding by Han about Leia & Luke
  • Ewoks worshiping 3PO as a god
  • Ewoks in combat against mechanized imperial troops
  • That Rancor fight scene has not aged well. At all. It's B-movie material.

There has been a lot of post on this topic. It's fine for Lucas to change his own films since they are... his.
Except that he condtradicts himself on every single statement he made in 1988. Not only does he contradict himself, he totally goes off the deep end and loony about it.

I'm sick of "fans" claiming that all these changes ruins what this film was for them because it shouldn't. No amount of CGI or other silly Lucas edits can change what this film means to me. The film stuck with me for what it was. I still want to see Star Wars in 1080p and it saddens me that so many have jumped on the Lucas hate train.

Don't get me wrong! These films shouldn't be changed and I agree 100% that the edits are silly and unnecessary, but it doesn't alter the reality that these films mean so much to me.

There's no such thing as true objectivity though. Every reviewer or viewer is going to bring their own bias to things.

I put RotJ over RotS myself. Though It's not by much. The wrap-up to Anakin/Vader's story is just more satisfying to me.

But in the end, I love all the films. And just can't wait to settle in with a Blu-Ray marathon of the films at the best they've looked in ages.

I'd gladly replace every scene with a Gungan with Vader screaming "Nooooo" in a pink tutu.

Nope. George Lucas has never said nor implied that an artist should be prohibited from editing his own work.

His statements in 1988 were very specific about outsiders altering works of art, altering the artist's vision. When it comes to Star Wars, George Lucas is the artist, not the outsider. Nothing he said in 1988 contradicts his subsequent actions.

Let's just hope Lucas decides to release I, IV, V, and VI in their native 4K format before he dies. I guess we need a 4K format first though.

I don't really think it's necessary to do that anytime soon. There's no real format to view a true 4K scan on.

And besides, the Human Eye can't really distinguish much beyond 1080p anyway. So I'm not worried either way.

Yes, but he also talked about preserving cultural history. That's extremely hypocritical.

That's a character arc that works.

Going from whiny murdering thug to whiny murdering thug in a cooler suit?

That's a character arc that doesn't work.
Luke also didn't become a full fledged villain then redeem himself by killing the man who slowly turned him evil (and thus made him a murdering thug) and saving his son. So yeah, he had a much larger arc than Luke's character ever did. He wasn't a murdering thug until the seeds of evil were already planted inside him. So yeah, that works for me.

AGREED. I am a fan of BOTH IP's, and yet the universe did not implode upon that realization.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming...

He talks about preserving movies the way the were for generations after to enjoy. He does mention altering ones own work. He also states that other head creators of the movie should be involved or agree to changes. I don't think Lucas got the director of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to sign off on all the dumbness he's added.

Since the director of Return of the Jedi died in 1987, he clearly didn't give Lucas the go ahead to butcher his direction and scenes. In his 1988 statements he made it seem damn important that you don't alter other people's work if they've died or don't approve. George Lucas is the epitome of the word 'hypocrite'.

As I've said several times in this thread, I'm not against some tweaking and cleaning up of the scenes. But, pasting people into scenes of a 30 year old film is ridiculously stupid. Let's just start chopping up all kinds of classic old movies and digitally adding people into them. That wouldn't be stupid at all.

I unfortunately cancelled my pre-order.
While I never cared for the changes made over the years to the original trilogy, there just came a point where I knew I wouldn't be comfortable watching the films as they are now on blu-ray. If the unaltered originals, or even the originals with slight fixes (make mattes less apparent, add a few extra ships in the space battles, fix some visual sfx errors, give an explosion more oomph, minimal things that do not really change the film or its' tone) were available this would not really be a problem (though I would still be disturbed by the fact that Lucas made these changes).
The audio and video upgrade is no replacement for the pleasure of watching a film I enjoy.

Next.
Next? Not quite. You've been nexted many times, old friend. Hovering for hours and waiting for me to log off and then posting more nonsense? Starting more nonsensical arguments over lightsaber colors, just like last month. Didn't you get so out control that they suspended you for that? What's next? Luke's winter gloves in ESB? Weren't you the same guy that last month tried to argue Vader's saber wasn't wrong in the 2004 DVD, even though it was pink in scenes that had it red in 1997 and prior?

Why not post a polaroid of a so-called still from the technicolor print showing the saber in green? That will really "win" the argument.

Like I said, if the 3D version somehow turns Luke's saber yellow, you'll be on here using the Kenner action figure from the late '70's as proof that it was meant to be yellow.

The saber you keep posting was never green in the films, not theatrically, on VHS, or LD. Only the 2004 DVD which most everyone, other than you, accepts as having created problems with colors in scenes that didn't exhibit problems prior. Using footage from an old documentary as proof that it was ever green is laughable. It wasn't even green in my old '82 VHS or the Faces LD sets from the 90's. Not to mention in my laughably excessive theatrical viewings.

Just like last month, no amount of posts, old documentary stills, or last word-itis will change the truth.

Oh Danny boy, reality, reality is calling...

Besides digital Yoda in TPM, has anyone seen/noticed/listed changes to the prequel trilogy?

Has that set leaked yet?

Agreed. I can't wait to see how all 6 films look, as they will all be beautiful, but the prequels will just have THAT much more detail to pick up on with the sheer amount of things going on. Say what you will about the prequels, but the art and production design was simply gorgeous. Now it will be crystal clear!
