I can't understand how GL will ever be successful in making the OT "look" like the PT. The one simple thing he could do (re-rotoscoping all the OT lightsabres) he hasn't done, so I'm confused. Also, I always felt that one really cool change to make ANH sound like all the others would be to get James Earl Jones back to re-do all of the Vader dialogue in the first Star Wars. it'd be an easy looping session, since no one would have to worry about lip synching, but I suppose GL is too cheap to pay JEJ twice, even though he only made $7,000 for the first movie.
Who ever said that Lucas wants the OT to look like the prequels? That's fan-talk... He always wanted Mos Eisley to be bigger and the music-number in Jabba's palace to be more elaborate. These to me are the most striking changes. The other stuff besides the restored Jabba scene are subtle adjustments of effects or new voiceovers (Boba Fett) to fit continuity and the occasional nod to the backstory (Palpatine in E5, Hayden in E6 and Vaders NOOOO). Fans are claiming he changed the films beyond recognition. Of course you can't watch the films and make yourself believe that these are the exact same versions you watched as a child. But honestly, is that more important than to keep the whole thing alive and breathing? If he really wanted to make the OT look like the prequels he could have gone all the way with digital characters with the rebels, a digital Yoda, Ackbar, TaunTaun, Rancor and Space Slug and CGI space battles! The criticism is way out of proportion...

ROTJ was too much of a kid movie ? they all were, they are, they are supposed to be.
After 'its a trap' when Millenium Falcon turns into the swarm of Tie Fighters/interceptors is one of my top fight sequences ever. That alone would be enough to place ROTJ in the number 2 spot right behind AOTC.
And that is also why AOTC is my favorite. The best space scene of the series 'seismic charges' the best lightsaber scenes 'obi wan-jango' and 'anakin-dokuu'.

So I am wondering.. Those of you who prefer ESB, did you always ? or did you outgrow the films that were primarily action based ??
I always loved Star Wars until The Empire Strikes Back came out. If you've never viewed it on the big screen, you need to. There is something amazing about hearing the crunch of the walkers and seeing them super-sized on screen. Most of the scenes were crafted with great care including the Star Wars Death Star Battle. The prequels look as if they tried to fit as many things on the screen at one time only because they could.

Hoth sequence is amazing yes, and I have seen em all on the big screen several times Didnt see Ep 4 on bigscreen until spec ed. in 97, but saw both ESB and ROTJ for the first time at theater back in 83 or 84..

I first saw the Star Wars trilogy as a kid in the early 90s and ESB was my favorite right from the beginning.

My ranking is:
V
VI
IV
III
II
I

From looking at the smooth DNR to add "clarity" to the PQ, the humorous Darth Vader - "No..........Nooooooooooooo" and the Ewoks blinking , this has to be the Robot Chicken version.

IMO (and I'll get slammed for this), my worst is ROTJ. I just can't take all the stupid stuff that happens in that movie, particularly after the masterpieces of IV and V. Great traditional effects, great Emperor/Luke/Vader scenes, but the bad parts just take me out of it. Let's face it, with AOTC after Episode I, almost anything would have looked better.

Here is the stuff in VI that bothers me the most:

Ewoks (yes, all of them, every scene. Just a stupid toy sell job)
Jedi Rocks (makes me want to disappear into the floor as a SW fan)
The Rancor (could it have looked any more fake?)
The Sarlac Pit (aka the giant 'p****' in the sand)
HC's Ghost (C'mon, George!)
Harrison Ford (Phone-in, and all the ridiculous pans for the camera)

Now, it's a tough call between I and VI for worst for me, but VI is just so bad IMO that it takes the trophy. Let's see, Jar Jar or Ewoks? Hmmmmmmmm. Do I want to lose my left one or is the right better? Episode I of Star Wars starts out with a tax dispute and goes downhill from there.

With AOTC, a better effort. Yes, the love story is as interesting as dirt. Yes, the dialogue is horrible. Yes, the CGI'd stormtroopers look fake. Yes, the story is all over the place and no one knows what the freak is going on half the time. Still, far less Jar Jar, no kid Anakin, and pretty awesome effects. I stand by my opinion.

People may ask why I am getting this set at all. Well, even at their worst, Star Wars films are still very watchable for me and IMO, V, IV, and III in that order are spectacular movies.
My list of best to worst: SW (ANH) - ESB - RotS - RotJ - AotC - TPM

I know a lot of people share your opinion and don't like Return of the Jedi. Personally while it's not as good as the rest of the OT, I love the second half of the movie - how can one rank TPM ahead of the movie that has the classic father vs son light saber duel, Vader saving Luke and redeeming himself, and end of the saga? I like AotC too, really TPM is the only of the series that I didn't like.

No need to get huffy just because I don't consider Harrison Ford's acting in the films to be Oscar Worthy.

Regarding older generations not liking Ewoks, it's amazing how 1980's children are different from the children of today.

I always loved the Ewoks but hated Jar Jar Binks. (as a kid I hated the Ewoks action figures though. Having a Wicket figure would be the equivalent of having the action figure of Lando's bald assistant figurs.)
My 6 year old son loves Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks.
From what I remember when I was a kid, half of the kids loved Ewoks and the other half hated them. Those Ewok halloween costumes existed because kids did loved them.

The younger generations love the OT but since the Clone Wars cartoon exists, Anakin and young obi wan seem to get more love than even Old Obi Wan, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo nowadays. I certainly dont hear any hatred to annoying goofy characters from kids these days.

Don't worry, the leaks of the changes we've been exposed to are the tip of the ice berg. GL didn't necessarily destroy the movies with the recent changes but he definitely did not change them for the better.

We're listing our favorites again? Man, how many times has that been done in this thread.

1. TPM
2. RotJ
3. ESB
4. RotS
5. AotC
6. ANH

ESB and RotS tend to flip flop position depending on my current mood. They're pretty much equal most of the time.

You can't go 1500 pages without covering the same ground time and time again

ANH is the worst Star Wars movie? Thought I'd never see the day! But hey to each his own!

Yeah I'm with you. As a kid, The Empire Strikes Back was my least favorite of the 3 original films and Jedi was my favorite. I still feel this way today.

Regarding Jedi, the Ewoks NEVER bothered me. I thought they were comical and I LOVE the scenes that involve them thinking C3P0 is a deity. I thought the speeder bike chase scene in the woods was breath taking and STILL holds up very well today from an effects stand point. I LOVED it when Luke ignited that green lightsaber! I was like "woah!! Coooool!!!" I thought the rancor was awesome in a cheesy, Godzilla sort of way. Plus don't even get me started on all the amazing Vader/Luke/Emperor scenes and incredible space battle! Sorry but the way I see it, there isn't a whole lot NOT to love!!

I have grown to appreciate Empire more now that I am older but my "inner child" still enjoys watching ANH and Jedi more.

Of course, now someone needs to check their copy of AotC's and see if the Jango head bang has been removed as well.
