Nobody's debating that the movie explicitly said Padme died of a "broken heart." What people are criticizing is that the death was made to be purely emotional/spiritual and that's weak writing. Those weird robots said she's "perfectly healthy" meaning that there wasn't any physical problem with her heart or other functioning organs.

In essence, the explanation given is bantha fodder. Had those robots said the choking and birth have stressed her vitals or something similar, it would have been more passable (and actually more tragic for Vader since he would have actually killed her). But...

"She's perfectly healthy but she's dying. Derp."

Yep, master stroke of writing there...

She doesn't even know her kids. For all you know, had she survived, she could have had postpartum depression and hung herself in the closet.

You do realize in every one of these movies, each of the characters worships "the force": some mystical spirit force that allows individuals to defy the laws of physics.

Please.

I'm not up to date on feminist scholarship but I believe the technical term for that is 'bullshit'.
Great analysis. It's kind of like in Braveheart when the Princess was carrying William Wallace's child - she doesn't keel over and die just because
[Show spoiler]he gets tortured and killed
. It can be safe to assume she loved him at least as much as Padme loved Anakin.

Love is drug. And a battlefield. A many splendored battlefield. A many splendored battlefield that makes some men weep and other men sing.

Padme's death - essentially a suicide - was ridiculous and completely gutted her character.

LOL - very true. She would have the kids that would have the good parts of Anakin (hopefully )

Yeah, yeah, that's obviously the more realistic thing. Her kids were probably going to turn out to be jerks anyways

Do you understand the bond between a mom and her child? They don't have to get to know their child to love them. A sane mother's love is almost completely unconditional from the first cry if not before. No sane mother would orphan her children because her husband was a evil POS.

Plus if she really thought he still had good in him she would have had reason from that to live also. She chose the easy way out and abandoned two newborns because she couldn't handle reality. Love is a deep bond but it doesn't make it ok to checkout on your children.

I find myself somewhere in between on the prequels. Though they are definitely not as good as the OT (including Jedi), I still find them to be enjoyable movies. Definitely not 5-star movies in my book, but still enjoyable.

It would have been a great idea if they had hired a writer for the dialogue though.

Man, that 1997 Jabba is hard to look at. Definitely one of the worst instances of CGI ever. It looks nothing like Jabba too. So happy they fixed it.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Of course she doesn't know them. They're just babies after all, who can't talk.

But they're her children. And most mothers will do anything to keep on living for their own.

Lucas just needed some way to wrap things up nicely, so he copped out on the writing.

If i were writing the film, I would have had Anakin kill her outright with the force choke. Obi Wan would have rushed her to the ship's infirmary to save the babies, while Anakin makes a cowardly getaway. Then Obi would have tracked Anakin down for the final battle.

With the final battle in tow, the Completed Death Star should have been in orbit of whatever planet they're on at this point, preparing to fire. So now, not only do Anakin and Obi Wan have to fight to the death, but they've got to fight to get the hell off the planet before it goes BOOM.

Film ends, Padme is dead on arrival but the babies have been saved.

Well we do ahve stories of people "giving up" after loosing a wife\husband, so its not tooo far off from reality. While some may have looked for a scientific or more hard set of why she died, doesnt mean what happened couldnt happen. We aslo see this with animals, for example when I was young I had two guinea pigs, one of them died givng birth, the other which they had both grown up together and always been close died about a week later...The end of RoTS goes to bolster Obi-wan's story that once Anakin became Vader, the person that was once Anakin "died" thus Vader killed Anakin (from a certain point of view )....

Of course now we are debating why a fictional character died in a fictional story with laser swords, space ships that fly faster then the speed of light and a mysterious thing called the force that gives you powers, but the way someone dies now is being questioned .......

She could have avoided all of this... but she loved him too much. Flaws and all. She wasn't weak, she was human.

I don't think you can really judge her giving up on life as a rejection of her children. More of a tragic loss for the life she wanted with Anakin.
I don't judge her, I judge the writers. I'm ok with the concept, it just seemed like an odd thing to me. and yeah I gotta say it,pretty sexist, I know more than a few women who were really miffed by it after Padme had been such a strong character up to that point. To die because her feelings were hurt by her man. She's the only person I know of in the Star Wars films that died from feelings.

I'm not some hardened broseph that hates romance. I love a good romance. and I love ROTS. But that moment was pretty darn lame.

You haven't heard of Post Partum Depression have you? And suffering from PPD has nothing to do with sanity.

Also, again... it wasn't just the fact that her husband was evil. It goes far beyond that. Just have to watch the movies with an open mind.

But we're getting off topic for the Blu-ray again. So let's get back to that. Wonder when we'll hear news of changes to the other PT films.
