No. Just because the HDTV version is an awful over-all presentation, doesn't mean the actual film elements are bad. If they can make Aliens; a film shot on 16mm in a film stock that got discontinued for sucking too much; look beautiful...they can make this big-budget, 1999 35mm film look spectacular. All that comparison shows is two different ways to botch a film transfer.

We'll see how it all comes together in motion in 1080p on my 52" in a few weeks.

On a side note, this might seem like a dumb question, and it probably is, but I just bought the widescreen OUT on VHS and wanted to transfer it to dvd. But my VCR only has one audio out. So, are all VHS tapes mono?
Why not track down the 2006 LEs? They look so, so much better than VHS.

One more thing: doesn't Padme not want to be queen, apprehensively take on a role as senator and then abandon those duties to be married to a jedi? I don't think its not of her nature to quit.

The only person i can think of is as i mentioned Sycorax.
The OP was not specific in saying it had to be in the movies.

So she was suffering from sort of depression and suicide wasn't really outside her character.

You weren't kidding. You really are a romantic.

Please give me a list of other Star Wars charters died of a broken heart.

I never could believe electing a little kid to be Queen.

Agreed. Character motivation must make sense to the audience, and must be believable even in fanasty. The character's are what guide the audience through the story. If the audience doesn't buy the character or their motivations the audience will not buy the story.

Exactly, the willing suspension of disbelief isn't unconditional. A willingness to accept the rocket ships doesn't mean we have to accept anything and everthing thrown our way.

Why not? The Egyptians made Tutankhamun their King at 9 years old. Padme was supposed to be about 14 in "Phantom Menace".

wow, that was easy. How about you give me a list of starwars characters whose fathers are evil and they have to bring them back to the light side of the force?

Padme was obviously suffering from some kind of depression at the wrong time. I've never lost my husband and given birth at the same time, so its difficult for me to draw from experience. Whatever. I give up. You win.
we're only give one family story arc really, so there's nothing to compare it to. We do however see lots of characters die and all of them die from things things besides feelings.

Wasn't most of the character suffering form depression? I mean it was a general time of despair unless you were Sith.

Look, you don't think it's a weak willed way to die. I do. You don't think it contradicts her fight for survival for her story arc, I do.

We obviously disagree. and I'm not picky. I have done my share of making excuses for Star Wars, but I like to think I do draw the line somewhere.

Padme was an important, almost as important as Anakin to me. As a kid I wanted to know about mommy Skywalker. (and don't get me started about how her daughter can remember her). But I digress, her life and subsequent death was something I had anticipated being portrayed for along time. and When her death finally came I had an over whelming sense of "....really..that just happened..thats it?...you have to shi*ing me).

It felt like 12 year old girl did the script revision. Scratch that, even a 12 year old girl would want her to go out as brave as she lived. It's written like man in his mid 50's who is trying to write on behalf of a 12 year old girl.

There's nothing I can say to convince you of this and there is nothing you can say that will convince me otherwise.

I could buy into it because it seemed plausible enough for me. By the time Padme is old enough to be into boys she's thrust into this political world where she has to be constantly in attention to her reputation and people. With the responsibility of managing half a planet, and the need to have bodyguards in her likeness, having a decent social life doesn't seem realistic to me.

So now for the first time she's on a planet that's not Naboo (or Coruscant) and some cute kid starts giving her the old charm. He even gives her a small keepsake.

Anakin could have been the first person to show interest in her that way, and if that was the case, she would have responded strongly, I think.

Luke just had daddy issues that would of not been there had his mom raised him. Now, Leia, there's a high maintainance girl.

Talk to the British Royal Family. Or any Monarchy. It's not unheard of.

Besides, Naboo doesn't just give their elected Queens unlimited power. She has a council of Advisors.

So is today, "I have no facts, so I'll make up BS to support my argument" day?

Aliens was shot on 35mm Eastman stock at I believe 400T speed. It was new at the time (and would have been used as it would work well in low-light conditions, but gave Cameron a grainer look than expected. Imo the 4K scan makes it look awesome), and if you knew anything about film, you don't need 16mm for a grainy look. Fast film speeds (i.e. 400T, 500T etc) will give a grainy look. And besides, whilst that filmstock was discontinued, a newer version/variation was made and you can get an equivalent speed film today from either KodakEastman, or Fujifilm.

Maybe I don't think its possible for Luke to be attracted to his sister, until he finds out the truth. Or for Leia to kiss him on the mouth and claim she's always known. I can let this go, because I know George Lucas didn't have the whole story planned out.

Except unlike those other monarchies, they explain she was actually elected by people.
