I saw that clip on MSN a few minutes ago, and it was great. The site said fans were boycotting the release because of it, but I wouldn't. Its not as much of a lighthearted scene as the original "kiss a Wookiee" version, but it still shows their chemistry, and it gives new meaning to their "repair scene" in the Falcon later.

Awesome to see more deleted scenes, but I'm glad George (or whoever) deleted it!

Makes me wonder what other scenes were deleted from the OT. I'm getting excited about this release the thought of the special features alone are getting me pumped.

Any kind of degrain process needs two things:
1) Figure out which pixels are grain/noise
2) Figure out what colour they should be if the grain/noise wasn't there

And they do that with various algorithms that work within the frame (spatially) and also by looking forward and backwards to different frames (temporally).

Temporal de-grain especially is a very risky thing to do. If you overdo it or your algorithms suck then you can end up with smeary artifacts.

I don't know if that is specifically the problem with Lowry's process but certainly many people have noticed weird floaty grain patterns in some of his restorations. I notice it in ANH - there are panning camera shots where the grain pattern is fixed in space for whole seconds at a time.

It doesnt help when you are doing all this process at the same resolution as the final presentation. If you scan at 1080p then each pixel is 18 microns wide, but what if your pieces of dust/grain are only half that? You have to remove the whole pixel, it is a very ham-fisted approach. That's why most high-profile restorations are done at 4k or 8k.
Thanks.....okay, I can see the potential issues. However, A New Hope still looks pretty darn good in my opinion. I compared some of the shots to Alien (similar age and film...of course, underwent a 4K scan) and ANH can hold it's own in terms of detail. I still give Alien a slight edge, but should be very close in motion from normal sitting differences.

I was very surprised.
I would have to agree! Definitely more subtle which works better.

Sounds like a good order, except I would change around III and VI (watch VI last)

Not even on this forum, but confirmed multiple times.

The running times matches the DVD also which had the scenes in if that helps.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: SPFX (1980, Apx: 48 Minutes)

Learn the secrets of making movies in a galaxy far, far away. Hosted by Mark Hamill, this revealing documentary offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into the amazing special effects that transformed George Lucas’ vision for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back into reality.

CLASSIC CREATURES: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983, Apx:48 Minutes)

Go behind the scenes--and into the costumes--as production footage from Return of the Jedi is interspersed with vintage monster movie clips in this in-depth exploration of the painstaking techniques utilised by George Lucas to create the classic creatures and characters seen in the film. Hosted and narrated by Carrie Fisher and Billie Dee Williams.

ANATOMY OF A DEWBACK (1997, Apx: 26 Minutes)

See how some of the special effects in Star Wars became even more special two decades later. STAR WARRIORS (2007, Apx: 84 Minutes)

Some Star Wars fans want to collect action figures... these fans want to be action figures. A tribute to the 501st Legion, a global organisation of Star Wars costume enthusiasts, this insightful documentary shows how the super-fan club promotes interest in the films through charity and volunteer work at fundraisers and high-profile special events around the world.

STAR WARS TECH (2007, Apx: 46 Minutes)

Exploring the technical aspects of Star Wars vehicles, weapons and gadgetry, Star Wars Tech consults leading scientists in the fields of physics, prosthetics, lasers, engineering and astronomy to examine the plausibility of Star Wars technology based on science as we know it today.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE MASTERS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK 30 YEARS LATER (2010, Apx: 25 Minutes)

George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan and John Williams look back on the making of The Empire Strikes Back in this in-depth retrospective from Lucasfilm created to help commemorate the 30th anniversary of the movie.

STAR WARS SPOOFS (2011, Apx: 91 Minutes)--The farce is strong with this one.
