Yeah, I'm really glad nobody took these images seriously. Thank God. They're terrible.

But, my disappointment will know no bounds if the final set ends up looking similar to this (although I really hope it doesn't).

I think that they will look a lot closer to that screenshot than we would prefer.....

We are just not going to get that "wow" effect on a large portion of these movies because of the older 2k transfer and the spit and polish performed by Lowry digital. It was fine for DVD and highly compressed HDTV broadcasts.

Like it or not nobody will ever conclusively be able to say that obvious outside factors didn't contribute to that win. There will forever be a big asterix next to Ledger's entry in the big book of Oscar history so you can't really cite it like done sort of "genre roles can be respectable too!" trump card.

As far as I'm concerned Johnny Depp's "Pirates" nomination an Sigourney Weaver's "Aliens" nominations are infinitely more impressive than Ledger's unofficial Lifetime Achievement award.

Since cancelling my pre-order I'll admit there have been moments of weakness so last night I dug out my 2006 DVD's. ANH looked lovely upscaled by my OPPO on my 46" LED and tonight I will watch ESB, with ROTJ tomorrow.

This way I can get the Star Wars bug that has been building since reading this thread out of my system and view the reviews next week dispassionately and then make an informed choice as to whether I really need to upgrade to Blu and suffer the abhorrent changes or whether I stick to my guns and chill out.

It's my version of a having a w**k before a big date. It just focuses the mind a little and reduces the inner tension

Quite frankly those look godawful. Basically like most bluray releases in their first 6 months of release when they looked like upconverted dvd's. One of my favorite site is caps-a-holic.com to see the improvement from dvd to bluray because as an owner of over 500 HD titles one thing I have learned is the screenshots don't lie. I am severely hoping these are fraudulent, but since they are using the identical 2004 master with a few minor tweaks I highly doubt it.

Any screenshot comparisons of the prequel trilogy?

I disagree, but in some shots...the difference is barely noticeable, although I can detect more close-up detail in few frames.

"godawful" is a distinct overstatement. Why do people expect razor sharpness from films that were never razor sharp? they could be better, and for Star Wars I believe they should be, but it's not some kind of PQ disaster. For example the detail in screencap #8 from ROTJ is excellent.

Forgive my ignorance, but are the DVD shots indicative of an Upscaled DVD picture running at 1080 or an SD DVD pic?

I only ask because they are so similar that a decent upscaling (see my post above) would come very close to the Blu. All you'd be really getting then are the extras and better sound.

Anyone?

People just need to go rub one out fantasizing about their Star Wars character crush then c*me back to this thread after the tension has been released.
You might then accept any PQ or changes.
May be some already have and that's why they are getting this release.

With upscaling, you can't add missing details that are not present on the DVD PQ. You can get some smooth DNR though with upscaling to provide a consumer acceptable HD look.

Also, if you sit 2x or more further from your display and have an old school stereo, the blu-ray PQ and audio is a waste. It's best to save your money and watch the DVD's at those viewing distances or stereo equipment.

I think god awful is a highly accurate statement. Those are nasty looking.

How do you know they were never razor sharp?

I'd suggest going to the STAR WARS thread, vice starting Another one. Of course you'll get 1000 Different answers, so...

** I ordered the COMPLETE SAGA so you get all the extras, but that's just me. **

I don't want to be THAT guy but I would suggest not buying it until Lucas releases the real versions of the other films. But if you've made up your mind and you're getting it, I would suggest the big complete collection set.

Now, I'm not sure, but how I understand it here's the breakdown:
Individual boxsets - housed in individual slim BD cases (or one regular sized case?) within a slip sleeve or box.
Complete Saga - in the same style as the Alien Anthology, kinda like a digibook where each thick page has a slot for the disc.

I personally prefer the packaging for the Complete Saga, but I'm gonna be one who just says "Nooooo!!!!!"

Have you taken a look at the sizes of the files? Those have been compressed to all heck. Its a wonder if this is the actual Blu-ray or someones idea of a joke to get everyone riled up lol......

Because they're shot on old anamorphic lenses with their characteristic blurry edges, have a ton of opticals, diffusion on the lens in some places, and now a bunch of half-assed digital effects work... not a recipe for a tack sharp film.
