I was actually thinking of going this route. I went from a amazon preorder of the entire saga, canceled it for the original trilogy, and now I kind of want the entire Sage. I do enjoy aspects in each of the new films as well. Plus when my boys are ready I want to watch with them. 5 is probably a little young but he loves the Lego Star War games so one day he'll get the real deal.

Besides, if the OT was someday released, you know he wouldn't be able to leave it alone.

Good luck with that, after pissing off fans with more pointless tweaking of the films. Hey Rick - you want to know what MIGHT get people back in theatres for these? 3D-convert the ORIGINAL theatrical versions, and then promise to release them on Blu-ray with the original versions in both 2D and 3D in PROPER, remastered quality. Yeah, I won't hold my breath.

I wish they would start with the OT then....not attempting to start a PT/OT war, rather my reasoning is I've already experienced them in theaters.

The OT on the other hand, I've never. I was 10 when the SE hit theaters and my parents refused to take me because they thought it was a waste of money and the changes weren't worth it for a few seconds of new footage. They didn't understand that I wanted to go so I could see my favorite movies on the big screen, and not for the new stuff...and the closest movie theater was still way beyond means of traveling for myself...

I hope I get a chance in the upcoming years.

Which is a great shame. The OT stands shoulder to shoulder with the PT on blu in relation to AQ and PQ. They just feel back to front as the history and time period the OT was filmed gives it a non glossed look, but the PT is completely glossy.

You can tell the BD menus are perfectly designed for a 3D release. You can almost see how they pop out of the screen!

Well, in ROTS and in the Clone Wars show their voices sound a little more lively and as if someone is talking with their noses being pinched. In TPM and AOTC they sound more like voice recording machines.

Default Worth it or not?

Is it true that all 6 Star Wars films have been nothing more than up converted to a sub par 1080p transfer? I've read mixed reviews but don't quite understand, will the anthology be worth the Blu ray buy on Sept 16th?

The ambitious project to recreate and re-release all six Star Wars films in 3D may not materialize as originally expected.

Instead, Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum said it may now only be one title - The Phantom Menace - that gets the remastered honor.

It's not a confirmed scaling back just yet, but McCallum admitted it is possible if viewer demand is not as high as it would like.

In an interview with a website called Ceskapozice.cz, the producer said the plan is to release every Star Wars film, in chronological order, in 3D, at a rate of "one a year, if they work."

However, "If they don't then there will be just one." Because the studio will be converting them to 3D and releasing them theatrically in chronological order, the only confirmed title is thus Episode I, The Phantom Menace.

The 2D to 3D conversion process hasn't exactly proven to be a big hit among moviegoers. Flicks like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans drew scathing reviews for what was seen to be a last-minute effort to bilk more money out of theater patrons. Neither film was shot in 3D, and the conversion process was cheap and, to many, not worth the extra money.

But Avatar director James Cameron has said the conversion process can be successful if filmmakers actually do it right. Cameron plans to re-release Titanic in 3D next year, and promises it will be a worthy 3D experience, even though the film was obviously shot using 2D equipment.

Likewise, George Lucas wants the Star Wars 3D experiment to be worthwhile enough for viewers to go back into the theaters and pay to see the movies all over again.
I wish they come out and give us an exact number as to what would get us to movie #2 (and all 6).

I would think TPM can easily rake in 20-30 million, right? I mean, think of all the young kids, 5-12 that never saw TPM in the theater. Some of those would come.

I wonder how much is enough?

The shame is they are all identical with the exception of the films have white cogs, the special features have orange ones.

The DVD menu were really superb, I don't think BD Java is anywhere near as flexible, but these are the best menus I have seen to date on Blu ray.

In that case, they sound like the clone wars ones. I can't remember if that is how they sounded originally though in the films?

1. He's made it "clear", yet changed the films twice more since the SE came out That "vision" thing seems to be pretty fluid.

2. He's ALREADY changed his mind and put the LD transfers onto DVD once.

So... after saying that the release in 1995 would be the last and that the 1997 SEs represent his true vision, he's changed his mind on both counts. He also changed his mind about how many SW films there were going to be, and what they were going to be about. And he's apparently changed his mind about all the little "small, art films" he was going to start making once 2005 hit and he could leave SW behind.

I see the reasons for your doubt, but I don't buy it. If there's enough demand and pressure, he'll go back and release the UOT. Maybe when he gets older and more nostalgic.

With 3D ticket prices? It could take in 20 million in New York

No they were scanned at 1080p not upconverted, and have been released that way. They look superb.

Some article said that the 3D conversion cost as much as filming the original Star Wars ($11mil apparently) so I imagine it'd need to gross $20-30mil to make a profit.

That article regarding Phantom Menace 3D is from June. And McCallum stating that the rest depended on how will Phantom did at the Box Office was pretty much public knowledge LONG before that article. This is nothing new.

Bill Hunt is dead on.

Sadly this entire idea of releasing them one by one in 3D in cinemas was devised when 3D was still all the rage. How far it has fallen in less than two years is phenomenal, everything to do with badly converted films and of course, the price. Poorly projected is as much to do with it as well.

So its no wonder Rick has come out and said this. Phantom Menace released in, say the spring of 2010, would have done gangbusters - as Alice in Wonderland benefited from after Avatar. Two years on and its just not going to do well - they're better of pulling it if you ask me.

There's only one Star Wars film they should have dared launch this with anyway, and its the original. I'd have paid to see that. X-Wing in the trenches in 3D a much more exciting prospect than watching Jar Jar Binks stumbling through a CG robot/gungan battle.

Got to say my first impression of the music mix was all wrong, its pretty perfect on ANH and Empire. It is front and centre when the dramatic nature of the scene demands it, back and low when just filling.

This really is ticking all of the boxes.

Sweetened, as in every channel more active. ROTS is pretty underwhelming, compared to TPM and AOTC. The surrounds were used as effectively as Ep. 1 and 2. The bass wasn't as good either.

I'm not a fanatic so cannot quote this verbatim like some can, but the light sabre fight at the end of empire looks like the sabres have been retouched. Vader has a hot white core with red glow. It isn't consistent by any stretch, but I think it is an improvement?

Have to wait for others to get the set to confirm.
