The biggest thing i would like to see fixed are the strange coloring mistakes of the lightsabers throughout, most notably in Ep IV. Luke training with the remote on the Falcon comes to mind.....

Another gripe is the black levels being a little crushed and the loss of some shadow detail. I can't forget the matte boxes that surround certain spacecraft in some scenes. Tie Fighters, Star Destroyers ect.

Haha that Stormie hitting his head has always made me laugh. George acknowledges that and even had Jango hit his head as he escaped the docking platform on Kamino right after his fight with Obi-Wan....lol

Yeah, I can't wait to share Ep IV with my daughter and experience it again through her eyes. She's already seen bits and pieces but she's still too young to sit through the whole thing and appreciate it.

But I'm hiding the existence of the prequels from her for as long as possible.

LOL. I won't be hiding the Prequels from my children, but I will certainly show them the OT beforehand.

That's an interesting decision. I've wondered how people brand new to Star Wars would approach it now -- in release order or in plot order? I think you're making the right call -- if you absolutely must show them the prequels, that is. That way at least they'll get to hold on to the image of Darth as an evil, frightening, all-powerful villain for a little while before he's presented as a whiny punk who is more likely to lock himself in a room and listen to Nine Inch Nails albums than conquer the universe.

Yeah, show them the films where Luke is the whiny punk first instead.

Someone once posted on this topic that they'd show their children Star Wars in this order

IV
V
I
II
III
VI

At first it seems strange, but if you think about it, it kind of makes sense.

I may consider it but I still think the best order would be IV-VI and then I-III, still not sure how old I want my nieces to be before I show them the movies.

At least no one calls him Lukee. And Hamill can act. But other than that they're the same, yeah. Good point.

I'm sure it depends on the overall comprehension and attention span of each individual child, but i think i will show my kids around 8-10 years of age.

Both Skywalkers were improperly trained, both Skywalkers harbor great sadness and rage, both Skywalkers were presented with a situation where they could turn to the Dark Side and "have everything they ever wanted", although I will say Anakin was far more tempted than Luke.

I don't care if you praise it or not. I disagree with some of his edits, and have posted to such effect, but you won't catch me whining about it with a sense of disgruntled entitlement. Guess that doesn't fit your strawman.

I simply said Lucas doesn't have any obligation to release a cut that the whiners (fanboys or not) are complaining about that he obviously doesn't care to ever release. Your sarcastic response is that you should jut lap it up. Well lapping it, shutting up... either way is just about as effective.

Eh? Anakin got a decade of training. It should have probably been two decades, maybe, but Luke got a couple weeks with the Muppet and a couple days with Old Ben...

What did Luke have to feel rage about? He was on the same barren dirtball, but at least he wasn't a slave.

On a Making Sense scale of 1 to 100 that post rates about a 7.

Who is whining? Some of us are saying the original versions are better. That's stating an opinion, not whining.

And because of that some are saying we aren't buying the Blu set. Again, no whining.

And where does entitlement come in to it? Do you randomly assign words or motivation to people for a living or is it just a hobby?

And strawman? Again, pot -- kettle. "Whining fanboy" isn't a strawman?

Seriously. It's fine to disagree and debate, but at least attempt to make sense while doing it.

Actually they say Luke got 2-3 years of training at least, the events of IV-VI supposedly take over a span of 6-7 years. It still wasn't anywhere near the proper training real Jedi got which is why I refrain from calling Luke a Jedi Knight like most fans do. He never knew his parents, he was stuck on a dustball most of his life and the only family he knew was blasted to death by the Empire.

I always thought it was 2-3 years between Ep4 and Ep6 and at most a couple weeks on Dagobah. Where'd you hear that? EU?

I agree with this. While the prequels are (IMO) very, very flaws films, I still plan to get them. Even if the movies were being released individually or in two separate trilogy box sets, I would still be getting them all. The prequels do have their moments... unfortunately they just don't include character development.

Quote:
I must conclude that with each and every single re-release of the original trilogy i am happy with the changes. With the exception of The Han / Greedo scene everything is fine to me. I DO NOT CARE who shoots first, it's the awkward twitch that Han makes to avoid the laser blast that bugs me.....
I have to agree about the twitch. While I would prefer if Han shot first (or in other words was the only one shooting), it doesn't bother me that much having Greedo shoot as well. But that twitch, which seems to be something that they (very badly) added in digitally to make it appear as if he is dodging the shot just looks TERRIBLE. That really needs to be fixed.

I don't actually hate the "special editions", I just have mixed feeling on some of the changes. For instance, while I understand the logic behind changing Boba Fett's voice, I just think the original voice sounded better. And while I fully understand changing the Emperor in Episode 5 to be the same actor that plays the character in Episode 6 and the entire PT, I could have done without some of the dialogue changes.

I'm 30 now. I didn't even exist when the original movie came out. When 'Empire' came out, I was only a few months old, and apparently I saw 'Jedi' in the theater at the age of 3, though I have no specific memory of going to see it. But I did grow up watching the original versions on TV and VHS. I actually got the 10th anniversary VHS set for Christmas (or my BDay, which isn't long after Christmas, I forget which event it was for) when I was a kid and watched them that way.

Even though I still had (and still have) that VHS set, I got the movies again on VHS in 1995 when they came out in those "faces" boxes.

I was 17 when the Special Editions came out in 1997. And I was excited about the whole event of going to see them in the theater and seeing the added effects, etc. So I was very much into it. I saw them all in the theater and then that fall I bought the VHS set of the Special Editions (my first SW set in Widescreen, by the way). It was cool to see the scene with Jabba in Episode 4 even though he looked like crap (they did a much better job on him for the 2004 DVD release, but IMO he still needs some improvement.... he still looks 'off' to me, his coloring doesn't seem right, and I HATE how in the '04 version when he laughs just after Han says "I've been waiting for you", Jabba's mouth stretches out in a VERY unnatural, computer generated looking way).

Honestly, my idea of the 'ultimate' Blu-Ray set would include the original theatrical versions of the movies, the 1997 'Special Edition' theatrical versions, and whatever the newest updated version happens to be.

I know that we aren't getting the originals in this Blu-Ray set, but I am a little confused as to whether we are only getting 1 or 2 versions of the original trilogy.

This is stated in the announcement on the main page of blu-ray.com:

"Lucas also clarified that the original trilogy movies will be included as they were shown theatrically in 1997 and released on DVD in 2004 - i.e., the original versions will not be included."

Now, at first I interpreted that as meaning we are getting BOTH the 1997 and 2004 versions (2 separate versions). But someone else pointed out, and I think they might be right, that it may be referring to the 1997 theatrical release version and the 2004 DVD release version as being one and the same in this annoucement, rather than 2 separate versions.

Which if the latter is true, I am disapointed on two levels. For one thing, we will not be gettiing the 1997 theatrical editions. And for another, in addition to simply not releasing the original version, the whole annoying "revisionist history" aspect of all of this is brought to a whole new level by referring to those two distinctly different versions as being one and the same. I realize that the additional changes may not be as substantial as the original batch of changes in 1997, but IMO they are substantial and noticable enough that the '97 and '04 versions should count as 2 distinctly different versions.

Quote:
I can relate and understand George's desire to continuously update and re-tinker with HIS films. I was watching his interview with John Stewart at Celebration V and he admits the only reason he was so successful was his inability to bend over for anyone and be stubborn. The fact that he stuck to his guns and made what he wanted was the only reason Star Wars was such a success. I can't imagine what it would have turned out like if Fox was able to manipulate George to change things around. Star Wars is what it is because George is a stubborn a-hole, i say let him keep doing so....
I agree to an extent, but here's the difference. He was worried that he wouldn't be able to do his movies his way if the studio got involved. But he was able to do them his way. And at that time, the original versions were him doing it his way (to the extent that the resources and technology of the time allowed). And he got to update them his way. Those versions exist now. No one can take that away from him now. And releasing the original versions in addition to the newer versions isn't going to take that away either.

I get a feeling that sooner or later we will see the original versions released on Blu-Ray. But I think he's doing it this way intentionally. He knows that no matter what future editions are released on Blu-Ray, the ones that will sell the most copies will be the first ones released, and that most of the general public won't "double dip" down the road. So, the majority will have his version and only his version. And that's fine. I do think it's a little underhanded, but it is his right to do it that way. But I do think we should (and will) get the original versions at some time down the road.

I'm REALLY hoping that they fix these issues, too. This wasn't specifically the result of the changes/improvements to the OT (as far as things like the new special effects, etc, go). This was them "coloring correcting" the overall picture, resulting in some substial errors, especially with the lightsabers.

This link has info on these issues:

If he really did get training for only 2-3 weeks then the pay-off fight on the second Death Star becomes ridiculous. There's no way a piss poor trained padawan with no true experience with a lightsaber would be able to beat the Chosen One, even in a fit of rage and the Chosen One mutilated with injuries.
