The inconsistencies don't ruin the movie for me at all. I don't even think about them, I just roll with it and take them in stride.

The hilariously convoluted retcon and justification everyone is doing to explain these inconsistencies is very, very entertaining to me, though, so please don't take that away from me.

Actually, didn't it leave burn marks up and down his body, according to the EU at least? Will watch it all again soon, taking a short break now to watch other movies I got yesterday.

He couldn't detect Leia in the Falcon in ESB because she didn't know she had the Force yet. Once someone realizes they have the Force, BOOM they're jacked in, like the Matrix. Once Vader knows too, he puts like, a The Force® homing beacon on them and he can just dial it in and talk to you from lightyears away.

Obviously. Try and pay more attention to the movies since you obviously aren't!

Oh ok, I think I'm getting the hang of this. But just to be sure -- the reason Vader couldn't detect Leia was his daughter in the first 15 minutes of ANH when they're standing face-to-face, or at any other point in the movie when they're next to each other (e.g., his hands on her shoulders as Alderaan gets killed), is because he didn't yet know she was his daughter.

The Force is confusing! No wonder those little midget padawans got owned by Anakin at the end of ROTS.

Somehow Leia and Luke always knew they were related but they had no problem kissing each other in a romantic manner on the lips on more than one occasion.

Hey man, it's cool, I'm down with the freaky stuff!

P.S. Maybe daddy Darth should've chosen THAT time to say "Luke....Luke....WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU CREEP! I'M GOING TO TELL YOUR MOM!"

I don't factor in EU, just the movies themselves. And the lightning was clearly all over Luke's face(even his teeth) when the Emperor was blasting him. Dooku hitting Anakin I can overlook. That was a quick hit and I think it got mostly body, not face. But Luke was being zapped for what seemed like well over a minute when you total it up and you know Palpatine wasn't going easy on him based on the angry look on his face. Yet not a scratch on his mug. In fact, he seemed to recover rather quickly compared to Anakin in Episode II. Although I'll explain the latter one away by assuming Anakin was blasted into the rocks and sustained a minor concussion.

All this said, I can't believe I have yet to watch ESB on BD. I've done the others but have been so tied up I haven't done ESB or finished ROTJ (my childhood favorite).

Come next week I'll have all the time in the world.

Luke only took short bursts of lightning cascading off his entire body in the OT. It was meant to torture him initially.

Palpy's force lightning was being thrown full power at Mace Windu, and being redirected back off Mace's lightsaber right into Sidious' face.

Man you just reminded me how mean and nasty Palpatine is in ROTJ. Can't figure out why Anakin wouldn't have said at some point in the last 20+ years: "You know what man? You're not as nice as you used to be. I'm taking off and there's nothing you can do to stop me! You lied to me about Padme and made me kill her. You're an ugly jerkface."

But alas, he didn't. Instead he became a big meanie, too, and wanted to kill his own kid.

Because the force wasn't connected to her yet. As for Luke Vader knew he was his son because the force was already connected to him and Vader detected that the force was so strong in him. Not even Yoda had as many midi-chlorians as Anakin and Luke/Leia.

Oh, I didn't notice the difference in degree of force lightning. It sure looked to me like Palpy was going full rage on Luke, and for a longer period of time (minutes) than Palpy got (not even a minute).

I'm no force lightning expert, though. I am, however, an expert in bantha poodoo.

Ohhhh, so the Force has to "connect" to someone now. Ahhhhhh!

This thread has descended into parody.

I always thought Palps was using the lightning as an excuse to reveal his true self. It wasn't the lightning that deformed him. The Sidious face was his true form, and Palpatine was the mask. That's how I like to look at it.

Palpatine was maybe a little further away from Luke compared to the distance from Mace, but he was getting the full Force Lightning treatment by the end there. And his face was being zapped repeatedly. And Luke was being hit directly by it compared to Palpatine getting hit by lightning reflected off of Mace's lightsaber.

Sorry but if that's the official explanation for Palpatine's deformed face, it contradicts what went down in ROTJ. What's odd is that Palpatine's mug looked kinda decrepit in Episode II(go back and watch in particular the opening scene in his office and when he's given emergency powers). He actually looks younger and far better in the first half of ROTS. I'm wondering if Lucas originally had another idea in mind for explaining the transformation before settling on the Force Lightning.

I finally popped it in last night and maaan. Blown AWAY!

The disc itself, awesome, great picture, thunderous sound, the Imperial March will just stomp your cranium right in.

The movie, wow... it just gets better with age, and watching I-IV before it, it really stands head-and-shoulders above them all.

I have really enjoyed the rest of them, even TPM, but ESB just brought me giddy smiles and stuff throughout. I was reacting to quotes like it was the first time I heard them.

You are in for a treat, good sir. Especially if it's been years since you watched Empire, like me.

Oh man .... I think that's why so many people like to pick at all the little (and sometimes not so little) inconsistencies across the Star Wars movies.
Just to see what ridiculous explanation some of the fans are going to come up with.

Lol aside, I think that what gets people going too is some people's attitude that GL -meant- all this, all the time, and that there were never any real inconsistencies or retcons.

ever.
