STAR WARS BLU-RAY AUDIO NEWS

By Vic Barry on Monday, September 06, 2010

Ahead of Invasion Cork (tickets up for grabs all week long) I got to catch up with Academy award nominee (and incredibly nice guy) Matthew Wood from Lucasfilm / Skywalker Sound. You can grab the full interview on iTunes or direct download it on the right of the screen. Regarding the Star Wars Blu-Ray release next year, Matthew told me that in 2004 he had to remix Episode IV for a 5.1 mix, and the whole thing had to be recreated from scratch from the original 1977 version of the movie. This will be the version that is the basis for the Blu-Ray by all accounts. There’s plenty more in the interview including the future of audio in the cinema, has it peaked or is there more to come as well as plenty of other Star Wars goodness and a little bit of an insight into Skywalker Ranch!

For those unfamiliar with the 'botched audio mess' from the Star Wars DVDs, just read the comments from the link.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

It's very unfortunate that Lucasfilm used to mean quality, however it is now the very opposite of the spectrum.
But we will just have to wait and see when this is released. But nothing surprises me anymore from them.

Well, they don't really need to do the blu-ray properly, enough fans are such doormats now, they'll make all the excuses for LFL and cut them slack that no other video product would ever get. ("They were rushed, it costs too much to do the same thing Apocalypse Now is doing, etc. etc.")

Well, the insert was made after the G rating, and your own quote states Fox clearly wanted the PG. The MPAA is SUPPOSED to be impartial (cough cough), and they are SUPPOSED to ignore the wishes of the studio (cough cough) so if the MPAA was split, and the studio was pushing for a PG, it isn't hard to see why Fox asked for a bloody insert to swing the matter one way or the other.

The bloody arm is in the movie for no other reason than to give the film a PG.

Have you seen the documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated"? A bit heavy handed, a bit mean-spirited, a bit unethical, a bit untasteful...but a lot of truth. You should check it out. The tactics are awful. Hard to argue with the findings.

God, I hope not. The 2004 version sports one of the most spectacular sound goofs in the history of home theater...the surround channels for the music are accidentally "swapped", with the left coming from the right, and the right from the left.

Rather than do the proper thing and recall the discs, Lucas stated that the swapped surrounds WERE INTENTIONAL! It's true! Pick that jaw up off the floor...you'll find confirmation in many reviews.

I hope we won't be seeing such a blatant screw up for the Blu-Ray...buyer beware, folks!

From the link...

"The whole 2004 dvd 5.1 mix is seriously terrible--it is hard to believe that anyone could think it sounded good, frankly. It is rife with errors, such as missing music cues, out of synch sound effects, stereo imaging of the music in the rear channels being reversed, absurdly loud LFE in places that don't warrant it and subdued LFE in parts that should be earth-shattering, background sounds mixed at far too loud a level and overpowering other things that should be more prominent, and many others too numerous to list. In addition to that, the entire film has a distorted and muffled sound because someone with tin ears wreaked havoc with the EQ of the fx stems, inflating the bass frequencies far beyond reason and killing the treble. It all comes out very wrong, and nothing at all like what the movie is supposed to sound like. Frankly, I wouldn't trust this guy anywhere near a mixing board, and if the Bluray audio is going to be like the dvd version, it's a blasted shame. That's not even getting into the whole 'originals vs. special editions' debate . . . "

And that's also why I believed that we got that Taun-Taun disemboweling scene in Empire too.

So I still have to wonder if Lucas will cauterize the arm in this upcoming set.

Actually, please don't. The sound mix on the 2004 DVD was unacceptable, plain and simple. It'll be even more unacceptable on BD.

I love the photo of Luke on Tatooine! Such a classic moment!

The Teaser poster is hanging on my wall and would make for great BD artwork, but I think the original Theatrical release posters would get the job done nicely as well, and I do like the SE posters of the OT.

Let the flaming begin!

I wouldn't go along with it! I expect the best of the best, otherwise I'll cry FOUL!!!!

They'd better not screw this up!!

Now is no reason to panic. I, for one, am going to wait for the reviews to come in (sometime in fall next year), and THEN I am going to see for myself.

Guys im going to play Peacemaker here for a sec then we can all get back to slamming Star wars lol .

Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon that has spanned many generations already its got to be probably the most anticipated release on Bluray or any form of media for that matter It is going to be great to see these movies in High Def. We should organize a massive online movie night of these films so we can watch them and talk about them .

A Internet movie night might be fun but I would rather enjoy the movies, quiet and alone once on Blu-ray rather then hear all night how the original cut would have been better, the PQ & AQ is horrible, Lucas is a hack, I hate the prequels........

Which it would descend into. I have always wanted to do something like this though.

Watch a movie with a community online. It seems like it would be fun, ala MST3K.

He said that it will be the version that is the basis for the Blu-Ray. This does not necessarily mean that they will take the whole mix as untouched, it just mean they won't make a whole new master from scratch. I'm sure they'll have the problems all fixed for the blu-ray, which shouldn't be that hard I think. And remember Matt also said before that they're creating a new scream for Obi-Wan in the Sand People scene, this proves that they're still tinkering with the sound.

PS: He said that he created the 2004 5.1 master from the original 1977 stereo. Wasn't it already mixed to 5.1 during the 1997 theatrical re-release?

The 1977 originals were 4.2 70MM Dolby, 35MM 2.0 Dolby, and mono. Each had its own soundmix with elements not present in the others.

5.1 for 1997

5.1 EX for 2004
