AOTC is a good movie (the final 40 minutes are excellent), and I think ROTS is a better movie than ROTJ. TPM is my least-favorite Star Wars movie by a pretty fair margin. I still like parts of it, but the whole feel of it is too Disney-esque to feel like Star Wars, mostly because Jar Jar and young Anakin are a bit too over-the-top. I also disagree that TPM lacks a protagonist - I think the heroes are clearly defined. But I think TPM lacks an antagonist that makes us feel like the heroes are in serious danger, and this doesn't happen until Darth Maul kills Qui-Gon. The good guys just seem invincible for the entire movie, and more importantly we never get to see any Naboo citizens suffering from the droid army occupation of their planet - it would've gone a long way to see a few ordinary people getting rounded up or shot by the battle droids while our heroes were trapped on Tatooine, helpless to stop them... Instead the whole movie just feels like the bad guys are vacationing on Naboo instead of doing anything truly dispicable. |

I pre-ordered this and received it on release day. I've been watching it slowly and have enjoyed the PQ and AQ. I grew up watching Star Wars and so I've been looking forward to this release for a very long time. So far, the only thing that has dissappointed me with all of the changes is the change to Obi-Wan's scream that frightens away the Sand People in ANH. It just didn't have the same impact that the old one did. I'm currently in the middle of ESB, so there may still be some more things that I don't like.
Many people in here seem to be arguing about what makes a good movie. The only thing that should make a good movie is the answer to the question, were you entertained by it? Sure you can further break that down by levels of entertainment (thus a grading system), but in the end it's all about the entertainment factor which is all about opinion. For me, I'm easily entertained and can easily get into a movie without worrying about why or how certain things happen, I just accept that in their universe that's how things happen. |

So many words, so many of them wrong. Kodak stock used in the 1970s was far more unstable than others. It was so poor they phased it out by 1983. Storage wasn't the issue for that stock, the stock was. IF you REALLY worked in film development you would have known that. You want to believe Robert Evans and the Godfather saved Hollywood? Go right ahead, but your source for that is his own self aggrandizing auto-biography and actual facts do not back that up. Was Hollywood in a rough patch? Sure. Was Paramount, yep. Did one film and one producer keep Hollywood from going out of business in 1972? ![]() And what studio 'actually did' go out of business in the 1970s? What studio(s) started the 1970s and didn't finish them? And where is this list of disappearing films you keep avoiding? |
