Basically Lucasfilm's holding the audience hostage by saying you have to pay (at inflated 3D prices, no less) to see 3 highly disappointing, exceedingly sub-par movies just to have a chance to see the films fans actually want to watch. Legally, it's not quite up to the standards of illegal tying, but morally it's pretty darn close.

I was making a separate point based on the McCallum quote that you posted; fixed my original post to make it more clear. I have no idea if 3-D movies in general will grow, shrink, or stay stagnant and I'm not going to argue about that...

Morally Illegal? Heh. That's funny. You guys manage to find a way to demonize everything... don't you?

And a lot of people like/love and really enjoy the Prequels. Your low opinion of them doesn't mean everyone feels that way.

I just watched Ewok Adventures: Battle For Endor tonight (I found the DVD used for 8 bucks). I can't believe it, but I think I liked it more than The Phantom Menace!

In short, illegal tying involves forcing someone to buy something undesirable in order to have the opportunity to purchase a desirable product. A fair parallel would be Lucasfilm attempting to force the public to buy tickets for "Jar-Jar and Friends in 3D" in order to see the OT films presented in 3D. The McCallum quote from earlier certainly implies that if people don't go see TPM that they won't do the other movies.

Then by that logic, all studios are guilty of this. For instance, Marvel forced the public to buy tickets for Iron Man in order for them to see Thor. And Thor in order to see Captain America. And Captain America in order to see The Avengers. I think you're on to something here. I think you should sue them and see how that works out for you.

Heh. Force them. Nope. Doesn't really fit the situation at all. Just another ridiculous "Lucas is Ebil!" comparison. But keep trying.
These silly Star Wars conspiracies are reaching Illuminati levels of ridiculousness at this point. But regardless, carry on.

Man. I wish this picture from Vanity Fair would have been included in the extras somewhere.
It's just awesome to see the main stars of all 6 films together with Lucas in one big photo shoot.

How would you like it if JarJar all of a sudden had three ears for one scene in the movie? You might actually notice that mistake! That is the problem with Georgie boy, he doesn't even know how to fix his own movies.....

So they are not "Sand Troopers" they are dirty "Storm Troopers". Which sucks.

It's hardly a conspiracy, it's called hard-nosed business. If you have 3 items (say, apples) that people really want and three items (for example, cowpies) that people don't really want, the maximum profit can be made by driving up sales on the cowpies by threatening that if no one buys them they won't make the apples available. If they sold the apples first, far fewer people would later buy the cowpies.

Still, have fun with all the tweens at the matinee showing. You can chat up all the moms in station wagons picking up their kids afterwards, I guess.

Yeah, there's no way in hell I would ever pay to watch the prequels in 3D. If they ever get to the OT, I'm sure more unnecessary and ridiculous changes will be made to it, and also I still have not seen a single post-conversion 3D movie that did not look like utter shite. Maybe if there's a 2D option... maybe.

There's a couple of problems with your analogy. First, you're making an assumption of what "people really want" but you would be unable to provide any amount of documentation to support what "people really want." No doubt, the majority of those who grew up with the OT most likely want to see the OT more than the PT. But then you're excluding those people under 20 years old who prefer the PT over the OT, or like the PT just as much as the OT and would like to see all 6 in 3D.

Secondly, you're suggesting that Lucasfilms is holding out on the OT until people pay to see the PT. And that isn't true. The OT in 3D does not currently exist, and money must be spent in order for them to be converted. Lucasfilm has started the 3D conversions in Episode order. What McCallum has implied is that if the Phantom Menace in 3D doesn't perform well at the box office then they can't justify the expense of converting the other 5 films. And there's no law against that.

OMG. I just watched TPM. Why did I do that to myself?!!!!! It was like being violated by Teletubies!!! LOL. I truly had forgotten how bad it is.

why did it look so terrible? everyone was blurry much of the time and blue eyeballs? were they on Dune? LOL.

Here in Japan it is known as 幽霊の嘔吐〔吐いたもの〕〕

I'm debating taking the set back and just getting the OT. will inspect special features first. or maybe i will donate I-III to a local nursery.

I am excited for IV and V!

Of course there's no hard "proof" (as if Lucasfilm would hire Gallup to do a national poll telling them the obvious, that most people don't like the PT as much as the OT if at all), but between Rotten Tomatoes ratings, IMDB ratings, and the mountains of anecdotal data on the Internet, I'd say it's still a safe assumption.

You're overlooking the underlying reason for choosing the release order. Why would Lucasfilm start with the least popular and worst-reviewed film to start with? Episodes II and III would be easier to convert since they were shot digitally, and Episodes IV-VI would make the most money up-front by themselves. As such, the most logical conclusion is because far fewer people would pay to see Episode I without the threat of having no OT-3D releases if it doesn't make enough money. Are you so naive to think that scenario hasn't played through the minds of Lucasfilm executives?

This is funny. There were two or three of the actors from the new movies who had it put in their contracts that they were not to be superimposed with Jar Jar in publicity photos. I'm betting it
's the ones all crammed over by lucas LOL.
