If you look at the publicity done for Star Wars in 1976 and with the trailers, there is very few mention of the actors in it with most exception Guiness & Cushing, the only two sort of real veteran British actors most people would or might have known.

Also back then, there was not the same cult following of actors you may have from today's audiences. Actors were popular and people knew them but there was no such things as Entertainment Tonight or Twitter or Facebook were fans could follow and develop obsesions over actors that are today not very healthy.

It's a shame that Alec Guiness would become such a bitter old fart about the films later in life though.

That infamous story where he made a Child cry simply because they loved him as Obi-Wan was despicable.

His resentment that he was known more for Obi-Wan than anything else was sad. Especially given how beloved he was for the role.

Of course kids are going to know him more for Obi-Wan Kenobi than anything else. Most kids haven't seen his other roles.

He seems concerned that fans of the films will grow up to be maniacs, (Hmm, actually...) He said elsewhere that he told the kid, "this is going to be an ill effect on your life."

(Still, he was respectful enough of the material in the Letterman interview. A shame; he received an Academy nom for the Obi-Wan role. He described the film on first viewing as thus: "It's a pretty staggering film as spectacle and technically brilliant. Exciting, very noisy and warm-hearted. The battle scenes at the end go on for five minutes too long, I feel, and some of the dialogue is excruciating and much of it is lost in noise, but it remains a vivid experience.")

EDIT: I find it interesting that Lucas claimed Guiness was upset about being killed off in a Star Wars rewrite, but Guiness himself claimed he asked for the change: http://web.archive.org/web/200805112.../guinness.html

People, you are breaking my heart!

Seriously, this is just sad!

Where are the mods here?

I actually prefer the prequels over the OT, because the story is much richer and more focused, and the VFX are worlds better. The amount of art that has gone into the making of the PT is unparalleled!

Jar Jar is funny, and many people like him!

Give it a rest already!

There are many people who love, and/or prefer the PT!

Your opinion isn't everything!

Doof, MCT and others have clearly joined the Sith.

Creating hate and mistrust are their ways now.

Sad. Very sad!
What are you, six years old or something? Mommy, mommy! Mean people on the internets are making fun of Jar-Jar...

Anyhow, I decided to make a mash-up of the logos for TPM and the fake "Blue Harvest" logo used to hide the crew of ROTJ from public attention. I think it's pretty appropriate:

Agreed. Too many people just blindly like anything that certain performers are in. I hate that. To me, the actors and actresses are NOT the main draw at all. I never understood that. Many of the greatest or most popular films do not have any big-time stars in them. Thats because the story and how it grabs you is what matters most. If anything, I cant stand most "popular" performers. They are in too many films and become severely over-exposed. See Liam Neeson for a prime example.... that freegin guy is in EVERYTHING.

In recent years, Bale and Sam Worthington seem to being cast into every other movie. Zoe Saldana is also another one that is quickly starting to be cast into every other movie being made. We are a society of fashion now, its not about whatever the actor fit the role or should be in the role, its about a name and it's a bit sad. While they are hot, Hollywood want's to cash in on them quickly, until the moment the public get's tired of them and they do after a while and then they toes them out like garbage and let's move on to the next popular thing.

Hollywood has always been like that - at any given time there are about 15 actors that are the main star in every single movie.

I always liked that there are no opening credits in Star Wars movies. No actor, producer, or director names - it's just 'Star Wars', and the second the movie begins we're taken to another galaxy.

This was like his second or 3rd film role, so no.

Some actors have made consistently good films, others have had a couple stinkers, but most of their output is great, so why are some people upset about people who watch a film because a certain actor is in it? I watch sfilms that sound interesting, and if it's an actor/actress I recognise and like, I'm more likely to watch that film. For example, I think I've only ever been disappointed in one or two Peter Sellers films out of the countless number he's been in.

Yeah, Harrison Ford was still an unknown when Star Wars was released. His only major role before then was in American Graffiti, which is part of the reason Lucas cast him in Star Wars.

He was awesome in American Graffiti. I think he was working on a construction project for Lucas before he was cast in that. Most of his other roles were uncredited bit parts.

I'm one of the minority ones here, and first think of Bridge on the River Kwai when I think of Guinness, Obi Wan comes second, followed by Jamesir Bensonmum from Murder by Death. I hope he's not disliking me from beyond the grave for that.

I am using an Onkyo TX-SR 606 and I have not had any DTS bombs at all. Is this something limited to a particular model?

Oh! I remember hearing that story! i always admired him for that. he was trying to help that kid have a real life. he saw the original films for what they are - but when he saw people who were totally obsessed it scared him. rightly so. he didn't hate them until they began to affect his life in a negative way.

i mean, doesn't obsession lead to the dark side? he was a jedi inm real life i think!

For those interested... Here are some of Lucas' nods to the classic "Forbidden Planet" (which looks amazing on Blu-Ray btw):

Qui Gon melts the door on the Neimoidian-ship...

The Naboo power-reactor where the final duel takes place...

One of the best sci-fi films ever made. "My evil self as at door and I have no power to stop it!"

When does a "nod to a classic" become "stealing" an idea? I am not trying to start a flame war with this one. It is an honest question.

Well looking at it this way, all "nods" are stealing an idea no matter who does it being Lucas (that we all hate ) or Nolan (that we all worship )
