Of course kids are going to know him more for Obi-Wan Kenobi than anything else. Most kids haven't seen his other roles.

First of all, you cannot demonize the man because he realized how much damage 'fanaticism' does (not being a regular fan, but an OBSESSED fan). Plus, if he had been bitter about SW, he wouldn't have done the sequels, money or not.

When I think of Alec Guinness I think Lawrence of Arabia (which is ten times better than Star Wars), then Star Wars, then Kwai, then a Passage to India (I still haven't seen Dr. Zhivago).

Ok well no offense to Lucas, I like him and he make's fun movies and all but Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge On The River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago and Passage To India were made by David Lean and as much as I like Lucas, he is not in the same league as David Lean

I actually felt underwhelmed by both Kwai and Passage to India; I do not mean they are bad, just fall short of the greatness of Lawrence of Arabia, which might be, the best hero movie ever.

If the story is true, we're talking about a child -- not the "fanaticism" of the masses. Guinness should've been ashamed of himself. He picked a child because he/she was an easier target than an adult. Hope he regretted it on his deathbed.

Love, love, love David Lean's films. Great Expectations is by far and away my favorite of his. I've always been a great admirer of the late Sir Alec Guinness as well.

As far as Alec's stance on obsessive fans, I would agree with him on that. Passion is one thing, but a compulsive obsessive person cannot be a beneficial characteristic of oneself. Turning that passion for Star Wars into something creative is what I think Alec would hope for, as would any other person involved with the 6 Star Wars films.

Alec Guiness was wrong to act the way he did, it was a kid, he just sounded like a bitter old man or grandpa Simpsons. If an adult would have come up to him like that and acted thei way, I would understand his reaction, I might have reacted the same "dude! Calm down it's only movies and it may well be time for you to get a gf!"

What he could have done with the kid is go about it this way

"well hello my young friend! Glad you enjoyed the movie but tell me what else do you enjoy? If you like good stories, never be afraid to pick up a good book and expand your mind, that's what a true Jedi would always do. There is your autograph my young friend and remember look for the stories, you won't regret it"

That way, he make's the kid even more happy and he acted in a way that Obiwan would and who know's what the kid would have done. Education is easy to do, kids are always ready to listen to us and even if the kid never did pick up a book, he still did not come across as a bitter old man!

It's true. Alec Guinness has even talked about it. It was a 12 year old boy in 1997. Maybe he was just having a crappy day?

Sure the kid said he'd seen the movies a hundred times. But I doubt it was that accurate a count. And so what even if it was?

Little kids love watching the same thing over and over again. Look at the Disney movies. They're always asking to watch them constantly.

Geez guys, give the guy a break. It's clear seeing what happened to the younglings made him act towards that child to keep him from a similar fate.

Wouldn't you feel bad if the character that made people recognize you was from a movie that is purely entertainment and has no real value to the soul? I'm not trying to put SW down (I love them), but Kwai, Larence and Passage all have better messages than SW. That's IMO.

The point is... it was a 12 year old. They likely wouldn't have seen or wouldn't have wanted to watch those other films at that age.

A 12 year old in '97 is not like a 12 year old in the 70s.

Maybe so but like I said there was a better way of handling it that acting the way he did. I am not saying he is a bad person but he sure could have handle this in a much better way and as such not make himself look like a giant a hole

It's how it is when you are in the public eyes. I hate nothing more then hear some sort of actor or athele say he is not a role model....WRONG sorry but you are like it or not. You may not have ask for it but it come's with the job. When I was a kid the hockey players where my GODS plain in simple, no other way of saying it. I came across a lot of them in the 70's growing up here and Montreal and I am sure each one of them most have been rather taken a back seeing a 7, 8 or 9 years old kid looking at them like they were gods of mount Olympus, yet each and everyone of them handled it the right way and made me happy to have been able to meet them. Kids are kids, it's the way you influence them that will determine what kind of adults they will become.

Guinness never liked that younger audiences associated him with Obi-Wan when he had an amazing list of roles and successful movies before SW.
