Well it is the best Star Wars film of all time. So it's fitting it made the most money.

*choke*

I'm firmly in the "Lucas needs a collaborator" camp. I think he made the prequels largely surrounded by facilitators who only brought as much creativity as he allowed to the proceedings.

There's a very telling moment in the doc on the Episode I DVD set, where Ben Burtt basically seems to realize that Lucas isn't taking the film in the right direction. I need to research it and transcribe it one of these days.

I personally think Episode III is the only successful prequel, and it allegedly had a script doctor pass by playwright Tom Stoppard.

Anyway.

It was Lucas's humongous ego that prevented any collaboration on the prequels, with the result being mediocre films with bad acting, atrocious dialogue, and the frustration that the movies could have been vastly better (it was also his needles meddling that reportedly derailed Indiana Jones & KOTC).

Also, are you telling me that TPM is better than Jurassic Park just because it made a bit more at the box office...? The main reason TPM was successful was because it had Star Wars plastered above it, and it was very highly anticipated.

I didn't once say that. I said it's fitting it made the most money because it was the best film.

Never claimed once that that was true of every film that made money.

The mere fact that The Dark Knight is on that list proves that's not true.

There was plenty of collaboration... just look at the extras. He gave everyone a lot of freedom, from the special effects department to even the actors. I don't agree one bit with them being mediocre films with bad acting, atrocious dialogue, or any of your other complaints. They're not any worse in those areas than the original trilogy. Which can be accused of the same things. And KotCS is another fantastic film.

No. Not because it made more money. Simply due to the fact that it was a better film than Jurassic Park hands down.

You can't really fairly judge anything by adjusting for inflation either. Because it doesn't really take into account a variety of factors either.

In the end, box office results means two things, Jack and Squat.

Interestingly, in that regard, they're exactly like opinions! (Of course, many of the opinions in this thread are passed off as fact.)

Glad to see you guys are still discusSing the blu-rays.

I love mine and popped in TPM again last weekend.

I need to watch TPM again soon.... been holding off due to the upcoming 3D release.

That and I've been addicted to watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes lately. Probably watched it 10 times since release.

The Phantom Menace is the sixteenth best film ever made.
For a fair evaluation, you have to re-calculate using constant dollars (including inflation). Otherwise, only recent films will dominate the list. When you use constant dollars, films like Gone With The Wind, The Sound of Music and many other classics enter the lsit.

Well, you can fairly judge some things. You can, for instance, fairly judge whether The Phantom Menace really made more money than Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back.

In both cases the answer is no.

Which is only fitting.

It didn't even make more money than The Return of the Jedi which is just sad, really.

And speaking of TPM and Jedi, I finally got around to watching the BDs and both were somewhat less horrible than I remembered. In fact, I think my two-way tie for last is no longer a tie: Jedi is pretty solidly dead last now. The terrible stuff in TPM is still pretty terrible but knowing it's coming makes it a lot easier to gloss over and most of the cool stuff is still pretty cool.
