In the last decade and a half, Lucas has given “Star Wars” several “final” cuts. For the 1997 special edition, he made Greedo, a green-skinned alien, fire his blaster at Han Solo because Han’s murdering Greedo in cold blood — as the 1977 version had it — struck him as a violation of his own naïve style. For the new Blu-ray version of “Return of the Jedi,” Lucas added Darth Vader shouting, “Nooo!” as he seizes the evil emperor in the movie’s climactic scene. Lucas made the Ewoks blink. And so forth.

When fanboys wailed, Lucas did not just hear the scream of young Jedis; he heard something like the voice of the studio. The dumb, uncomprehending voice in his Socratic dialogues — a voice telling him how to make a blockbuster. “On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. “I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’ ”

I couldn't agree more with him!

I can't wait to see his art house movies, at least on Blu-ray!

George Lucas forever!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't want to reignite something that doesn't need to be, but if that's the actual quote, he sounds like a 10 year-old throwing a tantrum.

That about sums up who he is as a filmmaker...and I use that term VERY loosely.

So easy to see the faults in others and what they say but so hard to look at what you are saying and see how wrong you sound

Funny how that apply to everyone not just famous directors

Everyone is allowed to their own opinion...including yourself.
You're allowed to say how "wrong" everyone is.
We're allowed to force you to watch The Phantom Menace and then make the same statement.

No need to "force me" since I enjoy The Phantom Menace but here let me get this clear and see if this is what you are saying

-It's ok for all these "fans" to call him a "nazi" and compare him to Hitler?

-It's ok for these "fans" to make fun of his family?

-It's ok for these "fans" to take "his movies" (he made them last I check and not these "fans") and then re-arrange them the way they want them?

-It's ok to call him childish when he call's them on it?

It's ok for all these "fans" to act like children however and say that he raped their childhood?

Yes everyone can have an opinion but tell me when you look at this list who is the more childish? Lucas or the so call "fans"?

-It's ok for these "fans" to take "his movies" (he made them last I check and not these "fans") and then re-arrange them the way they want them? Sure. Why not? It's not only *HIS* films that fan edits are made of.

See above.
And if we're being honest and realistic here, Lucas is no filmmaker. Any TRUE filmmaker would (and WOULD WANT TO) make his originally released films available to the public. And this is coming from someone who will forever have Star Wars tattooed on his body.

That makes sense for Episodes I-IV, but V and VI should be left as their directors had intended.

I always thought this was nonsense as Anakin murders children in Revenge of the Sith yet is thought of as 'redeemed' after he saves Luke at the end of Jedi.

I found reading the article quite sad, as Lucas has developed a 'them and us' mentality over the years. He really does come across as a grown man who's spat out his dummy. He really should have a better sense of humour about his fanbase and while I don't condone most of the things that have been said about him regarding the Star Wars changes or the prequels the comments do come from people who have thrown a lot of money his way through movie tickets, home releases and merchandising (or financed his projects for that matter) and unfortunately they would like to have a say in how he makes his films.

Remember if George had provided the original cuts of his movies on DVD and Blu-ray I genuinely feel people would have embraced the new versions more. As for the prequels they deserved the criticism they've received they're certainly not the throwbacks to a bygone era of storytelling or film-making he'd like them to be.

I hope he finds enjoyment and fulfilment in making these small personal movies he's always wanted to make but no-ones been stopping him doing this for 40 years.

I also hope that Red Tails will be a great movie and a big success and if and when Lucas does make more films they give him spiritual and emotion reward that he desires.

Don't forget Obi Wan cutting of Anakins arms and legs and leaving him to slowly burn.

So Charlie Chaplin and Stanley Kubrick weren't TRUE filmmakers?

Fact: there has never been an art form in which there is any kind of guarantee that perfect representations will be perpetually available for home exhibition.

If you paid to see a movie in a theater in 1977 you got what you paid for and nobody owes it to you to replicate that experience in your home 35 years later.

I personally don't like George's attitude towards the changes he made in Star Wars (no! noooooo!!!!!11) but I do see his point. They are his films and he can improve/butcher them as he pleases.

As I've said before, there have been changes I've liked and some I haven't. The ones I like are the CG, the inclusion of Ian McDiarmid, Temura Morrison voicing Bobba Fett...and the ones I HATE like Jedi rocks, Greedo shooting first and Vader's nooo in ROTJ.

Anyways, the whole arguement has been covered a trillion times so its like beating a dead horse.

On the subject of Lucas quitting to do smaller projects then I completely support that decision. He probably doesn't want to be known for just Star Wars and Indy, so he wants to exercise his creative brain as it were. I still want him to do Star Wars Underworld and I hope the balls gets rolling soon. My personal wish (which will never happen...) is a live action Clone Wars TV series with the prequel cast.

George has been promising/threatening to do these "little films" for years and, yet, he still keeps going back to Star Wars every time he wants to ruin the story a little more.

It'd be nice if he could actually DO it this time. Let's see if he's got any of his UCLA chops left in him.

What does this mean? Chaplin was dead by the mid to late 70's, he didn't exist in the era of modern home video, and isn't the whole controversy with the Kubrick stuff not what he released to the public necessarily but how the films actually were displayed / meant to displayed theatrically (not an issue the SW movies have)?

The Shining had the wrap-up ending hacked off it after the first screenings. Nobody cries about that for years.

I think that with his 40+ years of making films, he may be considered a filmmaker by now.
