The analogy still doesn't make sense. Kubrick altered it literally days after the first earliest theatrical screenings. It's not like there was one single theatrical representation of the Shining that Kubrick altered 30 years after the fact for home video release. It's not like Lucas first screened SW and then made some quick changes to it a few days later and started showing that version theatrically instead. I personally don't care, I don't care for Kubrick at all, just a bad analogy though.

That is true. Kubrick was nutty when it came to AR's. I remember reading that he was obsessed with home video so he filmed certain things fullscreen with the intention of later releasing them in 4:3 due to not being happy how his previous widescreen films appeared when pan and scan was used. So, again, not really a proper analogy. He couldn't imagine we'd ever be watching widescreen home video in our homes so he tried to remedy the problem of his films being butchered when panned and scanned by filming in 4:3 with the intention of releasing that version on home video. It's not that he had a problem with the theatrical version per se, it's that he didn't want it butchered when watched on a television set (which pan and scan certainly used to do.) Moot point now though, that it's in the theatrical AR on BD.

There was one definitive version of SW shown in theaters that the world fell in love with. Lucas altered it decades later. Kubrick altered the Shining only after a tiny amount of people had seen it theatrically and that altered version became the version the majority of the world saw and fall in love with when it was originally shown theatrically. It had nothing to do with changing it 20 years after the fact for home video. |

Kubrick's changes (which were not uncommon during the gradual rollout/roadshow days of a movies first few months of release) are not even remotely the same. Such a ridiculous comparison.

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series Sci-fi filmmaker hurt by harsh feedback from some fans about the prequels Source : Zap2it By David Eckstein Quote:
Whether or not this has something to do with the release of Red Tails, which I haven't seen (but truly do want to, looks fantastic) but it sounds to me like someone is being a bit selfish with his own opinions and/or arrogant with his opinions, and to hundreds of critics, and to millions of loyal movie goers alike. When DOESN'T someone make a bad movie, in anyone's mind? Sorry Mr. Lucas, face it, it happens all the time in Hollywood. It happens to actors, actresses, editors, camera operators, cinematographers, producers, screenwriters, and even sir, DIRECTORS. In times like these Mr. Lucas you either director, produce, etc another movie...
or in your own way, you just move on. Last edited by Sylentwolf; 01-19-2012 at 03:26 PM. Reason: Details, It's Always the Details! |

BTW: a working link to the actual article itself: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine/george-lucas-red-tails.html?_r=1&ref=movies There are literally thousands of threads across the internet that accuse Lucas of terrible things and call him worse, you need only look up a few posts to see examples. The posters who come to this thread on the Blu-ray solely for the purpose of bashing him and nothing more. If I were Lucas I wouldn't be so kind. |

In the new york times article he sounds like Cartman from South Park when someone upsets him. "Screw you guys! I'm going home!" Or the kid on the playground who would taske his basketball and leave because someone said he sucks at the sport. If he cant take the heat maybe he should retire. I do feel bad that he feels the only option is retirement when it clearly isn't. He could please a big chunk of his fan-base by releasing the original cuts of the OT restored on blu-ray. Does he have to? Nope, but it would certainly be an awesome gesture of kindness and care. That kindness and care would be repaid.
Come on, George, these films aren't just for your enjoyment, but also for the audiences. Honestly, if he would release the original Star Wars in its original cut without all the Special Edition changes and add-ons I wouldn't have anything against him. That's my only gripe. I could care less that I don't like the prequels. I never really needed em in the fiirst place. They are for others to like. Me I just want the option to watch the pre-SE Star Wars in prestine quality on blu-ray along with the SE. Many other old movies have this option to watch different cuts in equally good quality. I would like the same with Star Wars, also. Anyone have a guess when these might be sold separately? I'm only interested in A New Hope. |

Watched Phantom Menace last night. The lightsaber fight in this is still fogging epic. Meeting Annakin for the first time is also great. Theres a lot to like in this flick and certainly some head scratching moments too. I like some of the politics and Palpatines slow transition to power which keeps going into EP2.
The Pod race brings out the smiling little kid in all of us. For whatever reason, Jar Jar gets less annoying the more times I see this movie. And, Qui Gon is my favorite prequel character and Im pissed he dies. He was a rouge but I LIKED that about him. His attitude towards greed being good and his grounded-in-reality take on things felt real instead of the always overly-mystical Jedi beliefs. I love how he doesnt always follow orders and just does whats right when factoring in the present situation. ![]() |

Why do folks keep typing this? I mean, outta just 1,862 votes on a single interent forum 1,335 people voted for the complete trilogy to only 377 not purchasing (with at least some of whom purchased it anyway). I'm pretty sure the prequels will be just fine coming first with most folks in the world.
