Besides, VCRs were all but unheard of in 1977; nobody was going to put off watching a movie several times in the theater because a home video release could be a few months away. Thus the film played in many cities for a year or longer.
Yeah. The elitist I knew in the early '80s had heard of home video. Not many had heard of Betamax, which my family had owned.

True. I tend to do things the hard way I guess.

I'll have to give the price tracker a look sometime.

Haha, well I have a wife and don't like the prequels so I'm not a true Star Wars fan anyway

By the early 80s, it was a different story. But I was talking about 1977. The SW phenomenon really preceded the home video revolution, so growing up back then, if you really liked a movie like STAR WARS it really made sense to want to watch it dozens of times in the theaters.

Nowadays, you know almost every movie will be out on DVD/BD within 4-5 months after the theatrical release. So unless it's a 3-D movie and you don't have 3-D at home yet, or unless it's something you want to see in IMAX or whatever, there's usually not a huge incentive to watching it theatrically.

BTW we also used to have a Betamax in my house, but mostly it was easier to use it for recording stuff off the TV than for watching pre-recorded movies. Even when the studios started releasing pre-recorded movies, they were always pan-and-scan versions, and that kinda sucked, too.

I agree. I also always wondered how Vader found out it was Luke who blew up the Death Star. Did news travel all over the galaxy? Plus I always liked how Vader knew by the time Empire began, but then later on the Emperor calls to tell him that Luke did it. I guess the Emperor was out of the loop for a while.

I'd think that George Lucas' neck has inspired many fans to go to the gym.

Vader obviously had spies - and the Emperor as well. Plus just because the Emperor brings it up for the first time w/ Vader in ESB doesn't mean he didn't know it before that.

Those figures arent adjusted for inflation. Which they really should be.

Definitely the studios like it this way, they can say theatres are just as popular.

Look what happens when you do this

Star wars ep 1 becomes 17 all time. Proving it's inferior numbers to all other original trilogy theatrically.

All it shows imho is that there's very few movies from the last couple of decades that can crack the top 15 of all-time. In fact, of the movies from the 90s and the 00s, only "TPM", "Avatar" and "Titanic" are in the top 15.

If they want a fair comparison, they need to release every other movie at least 3 times. You can't say Ep 1 is that great since it was released more than once.

TPM is a great movie, regardless of the box-office results. As for releasing all other movies multiple times... most of them were, at one point or another.

LOL

I was starting to wonder that also.

And concerning 'Box Office Totals', GWTW reported totals are grossly inaccurate which was brought up during AVATAR's box office rampage a few years ago. So we will unfortunately probably never know it's true grand total.

There's a lot of great stuff in all of the PT, even if they're just "popcorn movies". What's really wonderful is that Lucas managed to pay homage to the stuff kids enjoyed in the 30s and 40s and, at the same time, he has put in a lot of other stuff that is likely to sail over kids' heads, but that they may enjoy when they're older and revisit the movies. You know he liked "Flash Gordon", but as a film student he also came to appreciate Kurosawa, Bergman and other great directors from that era.

I certainly do think of "The Phantom Menace" as one of the very best films of the last 20 years, even though evidently there are those who wouldn't agree...

Adjusting for inflation also is a problem too though.

Years ago people had actually go to the movies....now theres premium channels, rentals, bluray etc.

I never go to the movies anymore whats the point.

So your adjusting for inflation gives a huge advantage to older movies.
