Well, something happened that I never intended when I bought the blu set....I've found that these films, in almost no way, have any replay value for me anymore.

I've seen them so many times, and in so many iterations (including the first theatrical run of all 6), that, at this point, the alterations stick out severely to me, as do the each of the films' flaws.

Which then causes me to see how shabby some of the original costumes and/or puppets/animatronics have looked in each film.

Then, I start thinking about dialogue and plotlines.

Finally, there's still some awful SFX in this series that should have been "fixed" loooong before most of the other crap Lucas is/was concerned about.

Top it off with a healthy dose of frustration at having "no original trilogy on BD", and you see why I'm giving it up.

Star Wars just hasn't held up for me at all.....I'm now quite happy that I sold off my memorabilia collection years ago, as it saves me the trouble of doing it right now.

Not trying to threadcrap here, guys....I read the new posts in this thread daily. I'm just airing how I feel about this series now that it's finally out on the best hi-def format ever to exist in mainstream media. I bought the set when it was around $60....I think I'm going to eBay it and cut my losses.

I know what you mean. I only felt that they were good friends in the first half of ROTS. Otherwise, it seemed like they couldn't stand each other.

There were quite a few moments in AOTC where they seemed like brothers, to me, although you have to admit that sometimes even brothers are constantly getting on each other's nerves. But it would make sense for someone like Anakin, precisely because he'd been told that he was so special and so of course he's going to want to do things his way.

The moment in AOTC when Obi-Wan tells him, "Someday I think you're going to be the death of me" was priceless, imho.

Also, Obi-Wan's "good job!" in the Geonosis arena, when Anakin tells him they came to rescue him.

I've been in this same boat a couple times. I just give it up for a year or two and come back. Always seems fresh and enjoyable that way. Talking about it daily, over analyzing everything like we do, the constant disappointment for some, and a lack of agreement among fans can drive anyone away. For most of us these films have always been in our lives and its easy to get burnt out. Take a break and come back to them in a year or maybe three and see how you feel then.

I think the banter was supposed to make us believe in their great relationship but most of the time it missed the mark with me. The 'very young apprentice' was quite grating.

Obi-Wan was quite an odd character, he was constantly preaching about the Jedi-way through-out the films but all he does is shout (and lose his temper), scream (and lose his temper), cry (and lose his temper) and he seems to be constantly enraged when he's with Anakin!

He was quite the role-model as it turned out!

A lot of the relationships in the OT were like that, too. Especially the friendly competitiveness between Han & Luke, and the constant sexual tension between Han & Leia in ESB. Or Han & Lando testing each other out when they first meet again.

I mean, it's not the exact same thing, but to me it suggests simply that there were always some frictions or slight tensions between diff. characters, just expressed in different ways.

They had some positive moments - but these were far outweighed by moments of genuine angst and disgust. We needed more screen time where their relationship developed. It just would have made ROTS even better than it already is. A missed opportunity.

I always give Star Wars at least a year break between viewings. It's much more enjoyable that way. I also stay away from the threads so it doesn't take away from the "freshness".

Heck, sometimes you're just not in the mood for a particular franchise, especially right after viewing them. I just finished up the Rocky franchise this week and I won't watch those again for quite a while.

But I guarantee you if I sold my Star Wars box set, I would regret it so much down the road.

RE: Anakin and Obi-Wan. Their prequel relationship resembling the best of buddies is what we expected, according to what old Obi-Wan says, but, as always, it could've been spoken of "from a certain point of view". The lying old git.

In any case, there's a wonderful moment in the deleted scenes for Sith on the Blu-ray where the two of them take the piss out of some battle droids ("roger roger") which seems to cement their friendship in a way that's not seen in the films proper.

I always looked at that as Obi Wan trying to keep Anakin's ego from getting too big. Anakin was constantly overstepping his bounds. The whole meeting between the two of them and Padme at the start of Attack of the Clones is an embarrassment of monumental proportions for Anakin as he is stepping all over his master's toes and having to be reprimanded publicly as a result. The way Padme looks at them is almost like she's saying, "This is the best they've got?" Obi Wan was always more emotional and I have to say I believe he got that from Qui Gon. And of course he cried at the end of Revenge of the Sith because he had just lost his "for all intents" brother in Anakin. They had become so close that the eventual break was a huge wallop on Obi Wan's side. I also have to believe that the Jedi were meant to be seen as still flawed characters capable of losing their tempers and letting their emotions run away with them. They try their best to keep it under control, but they do not always succeed.

Side news - Ralph McQuarrie, who designed the visuals on the OT, has died today.

Damn. His art is amazing. What would SW have looked like without him? I absolutely love these in particular:

RIP.

RIP Ralph McQuarrie.

I remember one of the most exciting gifts I got for Christmas 1977 was his The Star Wars Portfolio with all the concept artwork. The cover's a bit wrinkled but I've kept it all these years.

Until Geor--- ah, nevermind.

Ralph truly brought the OT to life. His design and artwork were instrumental in convincing producers to pick up the project.

That is sad to hear. His art really sold the the idea of the original film to the studio. Without him the film may never have got the green light. For that and all he brought to cinematic art I commend the man. RIP Ralph McQuarrie.

So sad that another of Star Wars' original collaborators has passed away, 'cause it allows Lucas' cult of personality to grow ever stronger.

R.I.P. Mr McQuarrie.
