And it's also pretty well known that Lucas ghost directed a lot of RotJ. Including the Throne Room sequences. There's a reason the majority of the changes are with ANH. It's the film he's the least happy with due to budget and effects problems. Empire Strikes Back remains the film of the OT that seems to bug him the least. Other than some CGI tweaks to Cloud City and a better Wampa. |

Lucas has every right to do whatever he wants with his own work, just as we all do. The act of creation gives us that right. However once a creation gains a place in popular culture, then for the sake of history, at least one copy of that work as originally seen must be preserved, if only for historical purposes. Lucas therefore has an obligation to set aside one unaltered print of each of the original trilogy (and the prequels) and vault them for posterity.
Commercially, he can then ignore this original version and dismiss any appeals to have it released on any consumer format, as is his right. But many years from now, when his copyright expires and also for fair use purposes, the OT can be shown to the public in original form for the sake of posterity. Basically what I'm saying is he doesn't owe consumers anything. It is his work and we can either choose to buy or not buy it - that's the limit of our rights with respect to his work. He does have a historical responsibility, but that is an entirely separate issue. For the record, although I personally find some of the changes annoying and unnecessary, they're not a deal breaker for me. I still enjoyed watching the BDs recently, and strangely enough, I even found the prequels to be much better than I remembered (though I still hate Jar Jar). The changes really don't spoil the atmosphere of Star Wars for me, they're still fun movies to watch. They just shouldn't be mistaken as a way of life or an object of obsession. |

I commented on that scene in another thread i think - I talked about how you can see all the detail of the green moss on the rocks behind R2, something you can't see in the DVD or any VHS release, it's truly amazing and what sold me on its superb film transfer. |

Hey, folks...if you have NETFLIX...check out the documentary THESE AMAZING SHADOWS. It is a history of the Library of Congress Film Preservation Efforts, and the National Film Registry.
All the shots from STAR WARS are from the original prints. So if you have forgotten what the Death Star explosion originally looked like, before the Blue-Fuzz / Black and White Monstrosity of the DVD version...you need look no further. Amazingly, I still think the original Death Star explosion looks better than the "corrected" version on the Blu-Ray. Still more amazingly, how George Lucas ever approved the DVD version of the Death Star explosion to begin with. I can only asume he didn't watch it. Best regards, ER3 |

Like they're more refreshing because you can see them in a way that hasn't been possible in so long. Even ANH that normally causes me to doze off has been exciting to watch again. It really is a case of seeing them again for the first time. |

As vehemently opposed as I was to colorization I never bought into the whole 'moral rights of artists' argument. If an artist (say Irvin Kershner) creates a work for hire that work doesn't belong to him...it belongs to whoever paid him. If an artist does hold the rights to his work and then sells them then, again, they don't belong to him...they belong to whoever buys them. And even if I were to buy into the moral rights position I certainly wouldn't agree with the idea that you can retroactively give artists veto power over intellectual property that doesn't belong to them. |

I think I'm going to get a lot of people pissed off but I really hope George Lucas remakes the original trilogy. Being a 90's baby, I grew up watching only the prequels, as the original was made way before I was born.
I really want to continue on with the story and see what happens next, I have never given the original trilogies a try because I really can't stand the cgi's (yes I am very spoiled by todays technology lol). I think the graphics and effects really give the movie an important feel, and although this is nostalgic for a lot of older Star Wars fans, they need to show some love for the newer fans. So I refuse to buy any of the sets until they remake the original trilogy and put it in a blu-ray box set with the prequels. |

And any of the really problematic effects shots have been fixed with some CGI enhancement. |

Plus the old Sy Snootles puppet really was terrible. Especially how her mouth worked, or in this case didn't. I just like the wild rocking crime lord's den feel of Jedi Rocks, especially with the additional musicians and dancers. |

I still love the film, warts and all, but it's far from my favorite. It's actually my least favorite film in the Saga. I think a lot of it is the fact that I used to watch all the Star Wars films almost daily on VHS. So I burned out a bit. |

I remember there was even another version of the old Lapti Nek song, that wasn't used in the finished film, but which was included in the original soundtrack. Anyone remember what I'm talking about? |

On another note: I'm glad they finally fixed the Rancor, for the Blu-Ray release. The DVD was good (no atrocious matte lines), but something seemed better on the Blu-Ray...I just can't place my finger on it. |

Do you mean the Music Video version? Cause you can find that on YouTube. I actually like the Music Video version better than the version in the original version. Since it's more upbeat and wild. Last edited by Beast; 04-03-2012 at 03:47 AM. |

I remember liking that album version of the song a lot when I was a little girl, even though everyone seemed to think it was cheesy. I'm not sure when the soundtrack came out, I guess it must have been before the movie because I remember hearing the song lots of times fairly early on, and even being a bit surprised that there was another version used in the actual movie. |
