Red Letter Media's Mr. Plinkett explains why the OT, Episode IV specifically, is superior to the PT in the form of a new commentary:

Ah, the fallacious and hypocritical arguments that compose Plinkett's opinion are back. How people still listen to him is beyond me.

To my mind, there is no other film series that has divided it's fans as much as Star Wars.

Could you give some examples of those fallacious or hypocritical arguments? I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I'm simply curious. I haven't noticed them before.

Mr. Plinkett is awesome. He really single-handedly described people's beef with the prequels much better and in more detail than anyone ever has.

Not that I'm saying you have to agree with him or with everything he says, but I think anybody who just dismisses those reviews as some kind of tripe are just stubbornly blinding themselves to the fact that some people actually have valid reasons to think the prequels are poorly-made films.

In the same fashion as other are just stubbornly blinding themselves to the fact that some people actually have valid reasons to think the prequels are fun, good, entertaining made films

See how easy that work? No need to argue about it.

Agreed. I don't think it's a secret the prequels have their problems, but it's not like the original movies didn't have them.

Agreed, they should and I would buy them as well in double dip in a second. I have no problems with the special editions at all but I do still enjoy watching the original cut once a year in May on their date of release. I would enjoy having them on Blu-ray

I have both cuts on DVD and only the children watch the newer cuts. Besides IMO a few better (modern CGI) scenes I don't have any interest on them.

Just waiting for a good price point on the BD prequels..

Good old Mark of CGR-fame understands my plight.

(Wouldn't a Collector's set like that be so awesome on Blu Ray?)

When the SEs were first released theatrically I was 17, and the novelty of "Newer! Better!" bewitched me. I saw Star Wars five times, Empire seven, and Jedi three -- this in a period of...two months?

Now, like you, I usually prefer to watch the 4:3 letterboxed DVDs, despite having bought the blu-ray set the week it was released.

In fact, I find myself watching the prequels more often than ever (despite their blatant problems) because the prospect of watching the original trilogy is somewhat tainted -- Do I watch the bastardized new versions and lament the fact that the originals aren't available in any acceptable form, or do I watch the 4:3 laserdisc transfer and lament that the originals aren't available in any acceptable form? Nah, let's give episode 2 another try. Maybe it's not as awful as I remember.

Well, that's an entirely different discussion, is it?

Of course the original versions of the OT should be included, just as the original versions of the PT should have been included.

I agree. But I'm just talking about people that dismiss the Redlettermedia reviews as rubbish, which is ridiculous.

Incontrovertible fact? Somebody else's interpretation?

Since this is all make believe we can probably rule out the first one, no?

Take Phantom Menace. They moan about the visible poison gas when, um, every goddamn show that has poison gas in it shows visible vapour, like the classic opening titles to The Prisoner, for example. And they complain that splitting the Jedi up to meet down on Naboo doubles their chances of being captured, but doesn't mention that it also doubles up their chances of getting through to the Queen (it's a little thing called redundancy).

Or how about the whining about the youngling training scene in Attack Of The Clones; they're too close, they'll chop each other's arms off, look how badly they're swinging the lightsabers around blah blah blah. What, like those Jedi sprogs would EVER be given a full-power laser sword to wave around within arm's reach of another person?! Oh, and by the way they're KIDS, so I wasn't expecting to see sword handling skills resembling Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul.

See? There's so much subjective bullshit in the Plinkett reviews it's staggering, calling out the stupid movie logic - present throughout the originals and pretty much every 'blockbuster' ever made - like Lucas is the anti-Christ himself. Yes, there's genuine objectivity every now and then but it's quickly drowned out by the unwavering intention of the writers to simply rip Lucas a new one. And the haters just blindly lap it up without thinking about it for themselves.

Even in Plinkett's new commentary for Star Wars they get their facts wrong in the first thirty ****ing seconds, calling SW the first big blockbuster movie, when a certain shark movie lays claim to that title. Pfffft.

Just finished watching ROTJ on blu. It was and has always been my favorite Star Wars film. No complaints about the audio quality this time, but I agree that some of the CGI characters in the Jabba's Palace song are atrocious. One thing about Jabba is I wish they had used cgi to make his right eye open up (at least) as much as his left. He's always had a droppy right eye, and that has always bugged me, oh well.

I still do not like Hayden's photoshopped head, and he looks he's undressing Padme with his eyes, so it makes it worse. My friend whose not a major star wars fan, couldn't remember if Yoda's ghost was in the final scene or not because she was so distracted by the Hayden head.
