We were discussing Star Wars stories not films which were good. It was an example that a great Star Wars story need not be written by Lucas.

The reason why George Lucas has always insisted that the comic books, animated series and the novels remain as part of their own continuity is because he didn't want anything other than the feature films to dictate what he wanted to do with the characters in the films.

There is a reason for that. I remember the uproar that was created over the novels when Chewbacca was killed off in a moment of sacrifice of Han and Leia's son, Anakin. There was a lot of anger when R.A. Salvatore killed off the character in Vector Prime and we should be thankful that the novels aren't considered to be part of the official chronological timeline of the film series.

I will wait to see the previews before getting excited. They might turn this onto a chick flick series now. I don't like the idea of the original cast returning. I alsp don't like the idea of kids in this series either.

They need 2 years post-production, shooting could start summer next year. That is why they already have two writers working on the script. Projects like this need pre-production time for quite a while, a director might already been approached.

Matthew Vaughn is being mentioned everywhere now. Not my preferred director, but it could work. What do you guys think?

There are so many avenues to do down with the Star Wars universe. Why Episode VII?
I'm not excited about this much either. While it's probably a good thing, I can't shake my negative feelings about Star Wars in general, which stem from bad prequels to Lucas' constant tinkering with original trilogy. I agree that the saga is complete and they'd be better off coming out with a completely new story set in the Star Wars universe.

Something along the lines of The Knights of the Old Republic video games would/could make a great movie. Unfortunately, we'll likely be treated to more CGI light shows that focus on special effects, big name actors and mass marketing, versus an actual good story and well crafted movie.

Since they'd like to continue making SW films, wouldn't this be the best avenue to follow? Since The Order existed for 1,000's of yrs, you could tell many a tale, with Yoda anchoring the stories.

It would be a great avenue to follow. Unfortunately, Hollywood is full of stupid people who make incredibly dumb decisions, most of the time.

I've been having a discussion with a co-worker and I want to ask you guys: For those who were around back when Return of the Jedi first came out, do you think that the word "Jedi" was referring to Luke specifically or the Jedi order?

Maybe some of that or how about the Darth bane storyline and the whole Sith legend? Those are some good books, I tell ya!

The good thing about starting anew and going way back in time is that you elminate the problem of angering current fans, digging up Ford, Hamil, and Fisher, and worrying about whos gonna play who or what direction EP 7 will take. The older material would allow a writer and director to have free reign so to speak and that might work out for the best.

I think Id rather see more prequel-type stories told than anything new. ROTJ wraps it up so nicely: Anakin has been redeemed. Leia and Luke know their lineage. Han is a good guy. The original Jedis all stand together. The story ends there, ya know?

I gotta say both, with Luke being the first of that order.

Actually, a live action television series of this could be awesome. Wars has yet to duel with Trek in the TV arena.

Speaking of which, I think the Sci-fi channel is flushing BSG down the toilet with Blood and Chrome. They should have either done a full series, or a feature motion picture.

The very same reason that Cameron gave us a weakened AVATAR. They were BOTH raising children at home at the time. So naturally their films are going to veer more towards their kids and less to the general public. Sometimes the more younger a director is the edgier they are. But once they age a few decades and start raising a family that edginess can be subdued such as has happened with Cameron unfortunately.

The REAL head scratcher is the hard PG-13 rating that he shot for #III. So now if anybody wants to introduce their young children to the Star Wars movies, they will have to skip RotS until they get quite a bit older. He still could have made a good movie without having to resort to that desperate attempt to appease the disappointed Star Wars fan base.

I watched A New Hope in theaters when I was five years old and freaking loved it (although I can hardly remember it now). It wasn't taylor made for my age. In fact, parts of it were quite terrifying to a five-year-old, but I still loved it.
Yup, I was several years older and remember having to turn my head away at the bloody severed arm. Then when we were discussing the movie in grade school with each other, we were upset that they would most likely cut that scene out for public broadcast(which turned out not to happen).

Regardless, the new story does not have to be dark, but it should be serious again. It should be something you can hang your emotions on while having a good time. The original trilogy was always about the characters, and it sounds like they are moving in that direction again. I think it's cool that The Flannel Man is staying on to consult, making sure all these new ideas from new writers maintain a Star Warsy feel.

Now I just need my UOT restored to HD blu-ray disk!

Yep, and maybe if we are lucky, Disney will make animated versions of the first and second non-movie novels to go along with the new films also.
