Anakin's crying and teenage angst stemming from being a lonely virgin monk just makes it that much more of a forced romance, in my opinion. It's just bad writing on the part of Lucas and bad behavior on the part of his Yes Men who gave it the green light.

Padme's line doesn't even make sense. Plotting and war brought them together, there was never a "before." Also.. the "hold me" totally came out of the blue in the midst of a heated conversation about the very interesting (to Lucas anyway) political situation on Coruscant. It reminds me of another stupid line... "Anakin, YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART." He killed a bunch of kids and that's what you have to say? Really?
I wouldn't say that she's uninterested, or she never woulda kissed him on the balcony. Y'know, I've been typed down for this in the past, but I believe that Anakin and Padme had what's called a co-dependent relationship. It wasn't LOVE in the way most would view it. Y'see a co-dependent always believes that they could've done better, and that things are their fault because they feel responsible for the people around them. This is Anakin and Padme! Anakin has an overwhelming desire to keep things the way they are, and he has a hero complex to top it all off! Padme cares for others with all of her heart. There's a deleted scene where she shows sorrow over not being able to save some alien children from a dying world. That scene never shoulda been deleted. It showed why she ended up with Anakin. She was trying to protect him. Their scene together before they're carted out into the arena kinda proves my point; she figured that they were about to die, so she gave Anakin words that would make him feel better. It was at that point that she had made the decision that she was going to care for him. Before that, she held off because she had her duties to the senate, but at that moment, Anakin became the most important person to her because he needed her.

Alotta people are upset over Padme's "You're breaking my heart!" line, but this is also something co-dependents do. They feel that if the other person knows their feelings, that this may change the direction they're headed in. Padme didn't condemn Anakin for the Sand People slaughter or even the slaughter of the Younglings in the temple because she felt responsible for him. It's why a woman stays with an abusive spouse: they keep making excuses for them and their behavior. Oh, and the only plot they were aware of at the time were the threats against her life. Technically, they did get together before the war. On your other point, she wanted the fighting to cease, so she changed the subject to holding her. Once again, The Wife does this as a way to calm things down (and it works 'cuz I love her!), so I don't see a problem.

While I do agree with EVERYTHING you said, for me the worst Star Wars lines uttered in all the films ironically comes from a Han Solo and Leia scene-

[Show spoiler]Han: Did you tell Luke? Is that how you could tell?
Leia: I...
Han: Ahhh...

Han: I'm sorry.
Leia: Hold me.

(Groan)

Unfortunately this series bad writing did not start with the prequels, which is why I not only skip the Jedi Rocks scene, I skip that WHOLE movie.

Jedi's "emotional" scenes on Endor (including Luke and Leia's) have always struck me as hackneyed and not helped by Ford's phoning it in for much of the movie. Poor screenwriting there, presumably by Kasdan, that grew to epidemic proportions in the PT.

That scene always felt like it was right out of a soap opera to me. Glad I'm not the only one who found it rather out of place. But skipping the whole movie for a coupla scenes that don't even total over 2 minutes long? You're missing out on the best space battle of all 6 films! You're missing out on the most emotional lightsaber battle ever! You're missing out on a rather fantastic conclusion to a wonderful saga! You're just missing out like a mug!

I must agree. Its fun to trash the prequels because they are easy targets, but objectively speaking, the bad writing and decline in storytelling started with Return of the Jedi. I mean it has enough good individual moments that makes it better then the prequels, but its still a fairly mediocre film.

No.

It's not just only those scenes. For me personally the whole entire movie is bad. From beginning to end. That space battle scene is not that great at all, plus it has two other plots edited into it to boot. The Yavin battle has a heck of a lot more emotional grip and punch to it helped out of course by that fantastic score. The very short lightsaber battle is pretty OK. But that whole "There is another", and "Sisssssster" is just bad writing and you can tell that they are just trying to get it all over with.

Funny. I really enjoyed it back in 84. But as soon as I watched the VHS version of it a few years later, I knew that it just was not Star Wars for me. IMO

But that's just me.

The main saving grace for Jedi is the ending with Luke the Emperor and Vader. Those seens alone make up fornmost of the ewok and Jabba nonsense. And to be honest while on the subject I thought we could have lived without the whole Slave Leia thing. I know it has its fans but to me it's just a bit much.

As far as the dialogue goes I like to think of the Star Wars films as being made in the 1930-40s. All of the acting was terrible and even the dialogue from something like Citizen Kane or Casablanca would be laughable today. Lucas was influenced by the serials from this time period and that is how I choose to view them.

While I take issue with the degree of your assertion about those studio films, my basic thinking is on a similar track in terms of SW. Especially in the first two SW movies, the actors sold even the crappiest lines with enthusiasm and that helped sell some real clunkers. By Jedi, Hamill had learned to dial things down (which was appropriate to the character) but he also flattened his performance more than he made it nuanced. In some cases he was given worse lines, but in other cases he just didn't engage. Ford has always seemed bored to me in Jedi, plain and simple, and its pretty widely believed he was ready to exit the role -- it shows in his general lack of charisma, what often sold flat dialogue in the previous movies. Fisher was really just given nothing to do, so her off-screen issues aside, she was left out in the cold. Yoda's lines lacked punch and while Sir Alec Guinness -- as always -- gave a solid performance, he was saddled with exposition which was then watered down when what Yoda hinted at Obi-Wan explained to Luke who later shared with Leia and *whoops* revealed to Vader and which was yet again eventually relayed by Leia to Han, reminding an attentive the audience four times to wrestle with the Empire kiss's light flirtation with incest.

It's funny to think that Lucas was teased about his only direction during the original movie was basically, "faster and more intense," yet the PT frequently makes even the flattest, most redundant lines in Jedi almost sparkle in comparison.

WHAAAAAAT? Return of the Jedi is a pretty mediocre film overall, but its SPX are excellent. The models, the sets, the miniatures and the whole grand epic scale they conveyed was miles above anything seen in ANH and ESB. This was practical effects done by artists at the peak of their powers. I was super impressed just how well they held up when I watched ROTJ. The speeds, the flexibility, the angles, everything felt so much more alive.

Yeah - no issue with the effects on ROTJ or any SW film for that matter.

I understand what you're saying, but not a fair comparison. All movies are a product of their time and context cannot be forgotten. Movies like Casablanca and others were considered to have very good acting at their time. Star Wars was not considered to have good acting in 1977 even though a couple of well known actors were in it. Its strength was in other areas, of course.

Dont forget Star Wars is owned by Fox, so Disney would still have to negotiate that film away from them before they could release a box set of the first 6.
