They should wait till all 5 new movies come out and make like a 20 disc set. 5 of the new films, 6 original versions, and 6 of the new versions. Then some special features discs as well.

I'll never get so called star wars "fans" Look I grew up watching the theatrical versions my entire life, I am disappointed that the theatrical editions weren't included in the BD's yes, but does this make irrationally hate the changes on the SE's no and it never has and never will change my enjoyment of the films by one iota. People are just *****y and immature about their rants, and why anyone would buy the individual box set trilogies instead of the saga is beyond me....

Cause the prequels are absolutely abysmal with no redeeming qualities. How about you buy what you want and let others piss and moan about what they want.

Agreed. This might be harsh but IMHO the art on/in the Complete Saga box looks like fanart they drudged up on Deviantart. Lucasfilm has decades of amazing production art by fantastic artists and what do they choose? Crappy looking Photoshop paintings.

Whew, I'm glad I got that rant out of my system...

It's not that all the changes are terrible. It's more of an OCD thing, we want those original versions because it's existing material thats part of the Star Wars legacy. At least for me that's the case. I still enjoy the 2004 versions, I'd just like the option to watch the original versions as well.

I don't think it's worth it. The new special features were interesting, but I've never really been in the mood to re-watch them.

Because some people don't enjoy the prequels. If someone doesn't like them, it's much cheaper to buy 3 movies instead of 6.

It does look really amateurish. And it cracks me up that they used young Anakin's silhouette when he's the most hated character in the saga (aside from Jar Jar.) If I didn't already have the Complete Saga, I probably would opt for the separate trilogies, because my OCD is so bad that when the new movies come out, it would no longer be the "complete" saga and would look awkward (to me) next to the new films

You will still see it on Star Wars from 1977 as they own and keep the distribution rights. Fox still has "a say" on the old trilogy with Star Wars.

What order would folks recommend watching the series? 4,5,6,1,2,3? 1-6? Or some other order?

And the Saga is going for $90 while the trilogy sets are currently $30 a piece.

Personally I refuse to buy them unless they release the theatrical version. I'm not a big star wars fan or anything, but some of the changes/additions are just plain idiotic (like the alien thing singing). And adding CGI into an old movie is one of the shittiest, dumbest decisions I've ever seen any films make. Lucas is an idiot when it comes to his own series...

I definitely want at least the original series in my collection at some point, but I'd rather torrent the original versions and buy my own cases and inserts to put them in my collection that way than buy what is a lesser version in my eyes.

For newcomers I usually recommend 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6 as it provides a bit better pacing/flow. For people that are Star Wars nuts, like myself, I usually watch whatever I feel like at that given nanosecond of my decision.

"An Alternative Suggestion

How can you ensure that a viewing keeps the Vader reveal a surprise, while introducing young Anakin before the end of Return of the Jedi?

Simple, watch them in this order: IV, V, I, II, III, VI.

George Lucas believes that Star Wars is the story of Anakin Skywalker, but it is not. The prequels, which establish his character, are so poor at being character-driven that, if the series is about Anakin, the entire series is a failure. Anakin is not a relatable character, Luke is.

This alternative order (which a commenter has pointed out is called Ernest Rister order) inserts the prequel trilogy into the middle, allowing the series to end on the sensible ending point (the destruction of the Empire) while still beginning with Luke’s journey.

Effectively, this order keeps the story Luke’s tale. Just when Luke is left with the burning question “how did my father become Darth Vader?” we take an extended flashback to explain exactly how. Once we understand how his father turned to the dark side, we go back to the main storyline and see how Luke is able to rescue him from it and salvage the good in him.

The prequel backstory comes at the perfect time, because Empire Strikes Back ends on a huge cliffhanger. Han is in carbonite, Vader is Luke’s father, and the Empire has hit the rebellion hard. Delaying the resolution of this cliffhanger makes it all the more satisfying when Return of the Jedi is watched.

Narratively, it’s just like a movie that starts with a big opening, then fades to “2 years earlier” for most of the movie, until it catches up with the present time and concludes."

I have gone through the special features a few times already, and they are very much worth your while, so I highly recommend getting the Complete Sage set, but what do I know!?

I never thought to watch them in that order, but I think from now on I will. It really makes sense, and it does put the focus back on Luke who is a much better (and better-written) character than Anakin.

Anakin isn't a bad character. Like everyone else in the prequel trilogy, hes just a poorly written character.
