No, nothing is worse than this thread. It has gotten so heated and out of control in here at times, that not only have the admins had to clip out entire pages, but have had to hand out warnings and bans like a police raid on a frat house party.

This has often been one of the most (if not the most) volatile threads on the entire forum.

No artist is ever satisfied with the end result of their labors. That's why the old saying that "art is never finished, only abandoned," applies. But once you release your work for others to take in, they absorb that work into themselves and the social consciousness and give it their own internal meanings. So to change it without making the original release available is like telling everyone: "Go f*** yourselves. I don't care about your emotions or how you view art. I'm selling a product, and you are all my little consuming b***hes."

Lucas went from being one of the most renowned artists of his generation to nothing more than a toy peddler. He went from respected artist to corporate villain.

He should have never returned to the SW universe, something that even he himself has admitted.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

He should have focused his energy on doing other film projects or what not instead of messing around with the OT.

It wasn't just Star Wars he heavily tweaked either. He also heavily tweaked THX 1138.

As far as I'm concerned, adding CGI into films that came out before CGI was even invented is a big no no.

Yes we have all heard this one ... I for one believe it ... the original negative was used in creating the Special Edition ... but if fans (very talented ones) can create things like the Despecialized Editions on a home computer, then imagine what LucasFilm and ILM could do with their resources to give us the original versions ... as was suggested before, package with the current blurays and slap a $200 price on it and take my damn money

You are exactly right about that.

Moderating it after the Blu's were released was not fun.

Part of me do find it to be a hilarious swipe at the fans, but at the same time, it does take me out of the scene. Meh.

I beg to differ. I don't hate it myself, but depending on who you ask, there are those who outright hate the new ending and the implications.

You know there's actual important things going on in the world instead of worrying about George Lucas. For some fans to hate a man they've never met is because they have too much time on their hands and need to grow up a little bit.

Do I think the original releases should be out there for historical sake? Of course. But we've known his stance for the past 15 years. It's time to move on. It's one thing to attack the man's decision making and then another to attack the man personally. Has he caused anyone physical harm that I'm not aware of? The irony is without him there would be no Star Wars to even discuss.

It depends. If it is to make slight adjustments to incomplete areas of a film (like with Blade Runner or Star Trek The Motion Picture DC), then I am all for it if it is done without altering the movie.

They are doing this right now with Star Trek The Next Generation. Certain FX that were complied to videotape are now useless, so they are redoing certain elements from scratch. But they are doing their best to remain faithful to the original concepts.

With Start Trek (original series) they added in all new starship shots, but made sure to include the original FX for those that wanted to see the episodes in that manner. That's all we have ever asked of Lucas. We just want the option to see and hear the films as they were originally presented, in the best audio and video possible. Why can everyone else accomplish this, but he can't?

I've got no problems with Lucas as a person, he seems like the type of guy you can have a right laugh with. But his constant tweaking of the OT is frustrating as hell.

To be honest, I think some of the changes are understandable. Not all, but some.

Most of the changes are pretty dumb and unnecessary though.

George can't release them.

Did you not hear the news?

Lucas said this, Lucas said that, Lucas is on record, blah blah blah...none of that matters now.

They're not his movies anymore.

I get him wanting to update some of the junk mattes and the worst of the offending model shots. But yes, the rest of it is unnecessary. The Jabba scene in Hope is unnecessary, Artoo has now somehow gotten himself irreversibly trapped in that little hidey-hole, I understand that Vader's shuttle beats the Falcon to the Executor (I don't need to have the excitement and tempo of the escape to be broken up so you can show me a landing), and so on...

Now, look at that. Octagon doesn't like it when someone expresses their views on this issue. First, someone stated that George Lucas is arrogant. Really. What's arrogant are the Star Wars fans who think their opinions matters more than the man who created threse films in the first place. Say what you want, but George Lucas can do whatever he wants to do to these films and there's nothing nobody can really say, do or say about it.

Second, George Lucas will very much have a say in what happens to these films because Disney simply isn't going to want to completely write him out of the Star Wars universe. Disney realizes that without George Lucas, there is no Star Wars. It's sort of like producing a Star Trek TV series without Gene Roddenberry or making a Superman movie without Clark Kent. lols

George Lucas isn't completely out of the Star Wars universe, he's just not going to be actively involved in the production of the new Star Wars films.

Crap, far as I'm concerned, if Lucas decides he wants to go back and produce an additional two hours of new content for each film in the original trilogy, I'm all for that. I'm not so arrogant that I have to right to tell Lucas 'you can't do that'. But, I find it hilarious that Star Wars fans kept demanding that Lucas release the Star Wars films for Blu-ray and when he does, everybody complains. lols

Just gotta appreciate the irony. Nobody's happy until everybody is unhappy.
