Actually, neither of you are fully correct, LOL.

Long story short: Lucas did cut the hell up out of the original camera negatives of ANH for the Special Editions. It no longer exists in full form. And when they cracked it open in 1994, it was severely deteriorated.

When cutting and splicing film, you lose a frame on each side. You cannot cut on the frame, you have to cut half-way into the frame after the one you wish to make the cut at, destroying that frame. Some of those frames were indeed lost forever when he cut them all to heck to make the special editions.

The first copies (the IP's) still exist (and supposedly Lucas himself is in possession of the most well-preserved one).

That doesn't mean they couldn't do a bang-up transfer of one of the IP's, but the film that went through the camera when they were filming is at best in pieces somewhere.

1) Lucas has softened QUITE a bit the last few years. He even admits now he understands why "real" characters with rubber masks just maybe more desirable and realistic than fully-CGI characters by the audience (fully contrary to his comments in the commentaries from the DVDs a decade or so ago).

2) Oh, it could still happen - the IP prints still exist, Technicolor prints, and the Separation Masters - and it could all be cobbled together and transferred just fine. At least as far as the human eye is concerned we probably couldn't tell the difference.

Like many, I am most disturbed by the whole deal just from a historical perspective - here is one of the most important films every made (right up there with Oz) and he just sliced it up and destroyed frames like it was nothing at all. Today that wouldn't need to happen, in the name of being an "innovator" he didn't wait for the technology to exist to do it right (pretty much the issue with the Special Editions to begin with - the CG just wasn't very good in the '97 release).

The historian/archivist in me just cringes every time I think about it. I picture an original frame of Princess Leia cut in half and I want to cry, LOL. In all, at 24fps even with all the cuts that were made, it's still only a matter of seconds - but it's destroyed. And the real kicker is - he had to restore it perfectly before he cut it all up again for the SE's.

The article I linked is very long, but it's fascinating - it should be required reading before posting in this thread, LOL.

What is unknown is where those pieces are. Presumably they were preserved - but no one really has any idea, and the people that would know have never spoken.

All that said, I do think we will see the unaltered versions come out - I have full faith Disney is going to do a bang-up job on a box set. Frankly, it's not Lucas' decision anymore. Iger was pretty clear - yes, of course they will be consulting George, but if you read some of the business articles about the purchase, Iger made it clear that Disney will make the final call on anything.
