Seemless branching would be the best option for anyone you wants to pick and choose which version of scenes to watch. I still wish they would have added the Luke and Biggs scene into a New Hope.

Seamless branching though would not work because the color timing of the original movies is radically different compared to the SE/newer versions. They would need to be separate discs.

The only thing that really bothered me in A New Hope, and it was slight, was when the CGI sequence of the Jawa falling off that tall creature. Pointless and stuck out like a sore thumb in the movie.

My biggest issue with the updated Empire is Fett's original voice removed as well as the whole Vader shuttle sequence which horribly hurts the pacing of that moment during the movie. From a sheer editing standpoint, I have no clue what Lucas was thinking.

With Jedi, I cannot stand the stupid dance sequence at Jabba's palace. I almost have to fast forward through that on the Blu. And get rid of the "Nooooooo" of course. As far as the updated ending, that didn't not bother me nearly as bad.

The only thing that needs to be added to Empire is having Leia yell out "NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" when the carbonite slab hits the floor and shows Han encased inside.

Oh yeah, Jedi changes are shit. I hate that scene and the stupid beak they put on the once-menacing Sarlac pit.

The only good addition is the opening of the windows on Cloud City , it looks pretty and it makes sense

I dislike the lack of spacial continuity between the old and new wampa cave material.

Not to mention it really disrupts the tone of the scene.

That's a strange one, isn't it? The extensions to Cloud City still look seamless some 17 years later (Christ, where has the time gone?), but not doing that subsequent shot was just bizarre.

I don't mind the Wampa scene, but yeah, it doesn't quite flow properly.

It's always been the LucasFilm way. Fix a problem and create another one! It can't have been that difficult to watch all the Cloud City scenes and make a note where the windows should be? Same with Artoo and the CGI rock.

Well, that's the crux of the matter, isn't it? Lucas has always been so hellbent on changing more and more stuff that he overlooks the existing flubs. For example, Artoo's blue panels are STILL black when he's in the X-Wing bluescreen shots [edit] in Star Wars, even though they were corrected for the other two films. But clearly the priority was adding those wholly unconvincing CG rocks to that earlier scene, not to mention that godawful new howl that Obi-Wan emits to scare off the Sand People. And those rocks have created their own continuity problem, 'cause they simply vanish a couple of shots later!

Ever since Lucas decided to step down and hand things over to Kathleen Kennedy and sell the company to Disney, I've wondered if there will be more tinkering done to the films. With all the continuity errors present in even the most recent updates, it seems like Lucasfilm's revisions are far from over.

Personally, I think that ROTJ was the only film that actually benefited from the "Special Edition" treatment.

I'm really glad that they cut out the NNNOOOOOOO that Luke yelled when he jumped away from Vader, down the Bespin Shaft!
That was (at the time) THE worst addition to the Trilogy!

I'm sure many of you have seen this comparsen piece of the Death Star Battle from A New Hope.

Having exterminated it a few times I think that even though there were a handful of shots from the theatrical version that still looked fine and didn't need to be upgraded, there were also many other shoddy looking model shots that benefited from the CGI updating. A large portion of the model shots remain and what remains still looks great, but overall the CGI replacement shots connect pretty well and add some extra mobility and excitement to the sequence.

Garbage Mattes.
Crushed Blacks.
Overall Darker.
Lack of Depth.

But the FX aren't that bad...

+1. Absolutely hated the original versions ending. It stands as the only original trilogy movie that I watched once in theaters some thirty-one years ago. When I had the original release vhs, I would end it at Vader's funeral pyre. I loathed Ewoks and the yub yub song. Glad for the removal of that sh!t song and less ewok focused ending.

In general, the Special Edition changes to the celebration at end of Jedi were an improvement, but once Jar Jar (and Hayden) were added in the 2004 edit, I found myself wishing we had Yub Nub back.

Despite that, how can anyone think the new Max Rebo band scene in Jabba's Palace was an improvement? Jedi's tweaks are just as dumb as the tweaks performed on the other two films.
