Of course, if you hate the prequels and just want to watch the original trilogy then yeah i can see how that pisses people off.

I think these all old losers yelling at Lucas forget that to most of us Star Wars has always been the edited versions and the prequels have always existed (well actually most people my age haven't seen Star Wars).

I don't see the problem with the edits Lucas has made. He's not forcing you to watch the movies and doesn't owe anybody anything. If you saw the movies then you did so out of your own free will.

I don't have any problem with the prequels either. Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars movie I saw and it's still my favorite in the series. I prefer the Prequels in fact. Thematically they are the stronger films. The originals are a simple good vs. evil story. The prequels actually have a significant amount of depth to them and a great deal of basis in history/literature.

The Rise of the Empire is an allegory to the Nazi's and Anakin's fall is an allegory to the biblical story of Lucifer. It's also an allegory to the fall of the Roman Republic and Rise of the Roman Empire. In fact the prequels take a lot from the Roman Republic. Revenge of The Sith is also basically Macbeth. It's also kind of a Greek Tragedy. For such complex films, the hate the prequels is quite honestly baffling.

All other considerations aside, he really is the poster boy for Stranger Danger there.

What a weird choice.

Lucas must have gotten bored one day and thought "f**k it, I've changed these films loads already and I know how much everyone loves Hayden, so I'll put him into Return Of The Jedi for the hell of it".

When I watched the non-ruined version of Return Of The Jedi all those years ago in the theater in 1983 and on VHS when Luke takes off the Vader mask and Luke tells him that he has to save him and Anakin says "you already have Luke, you already have" I took it to mean that he changed back to Anakin. So when we see the older Anakin standing next to Yoda and Obi Wan it made sense. Now it is a child murdering spoiled brat who helped usher in a dictatorship because he had a temper tantrum standing there. Big difference.

Cool My thinking on the OT

Star Wars, and it's 2 sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, are iconic, important movies, and form the core of one of the most important motion picture series in the history of cinema.

However, the movies as currently presented on DVD and Blu-Ray, are not the movies that made history. Not as they were, at any rate.

Whatever one may think of the changes, that mostly started in 1997 when the Special Editions were created, I believe that it is an affront to motion picutre history that the movies currently do not exist as they did when they were first released in 1977, 1980 and 1983 respectively.

When first released in 1977, the visual effects, sound and other elements were industry altering and award winning.

The movie changed the face of cinema forever, changed the way films were made, changed what was possible to do on film, and defined the summer blockbuster.

It's importance to motion picture history simply cannot be understated.

And yet, we can never see this film. It no longer exists.

When I look at the changes in-and-of themselves, some of them work, some of them are very good. And some, I believe do not work.

To clarify, I believe George Lucas had every right to create the versions of the films he did, as the author of the saga, as the director of the first movie, and as the owner of these movies, he could, and did, whatever he saw fit, and to make any changes he wanted to in furtherance of completing his vision.

But with great power comes great responsibility.

He cannot rewrite history, and had no right to destroy the films as they were.

To preserve both his rights as the author, and to fulfill his responsibility to care for the films that made history, and the history he made while making those films, the unaltered versions of the films should be presented, along with the 2011 versions of the movies, on Blu-ray.

The original movies need to be preserved, restored and protected, along with the Blu-ray versions created in 2011.

Even if never released on Blu-ray, both versions must be preserved.

I personally hope that Disney and Fox can engage in the restoration of these important films to their original configuration, and make available both versions of the movies.

Why the hell would he destroy them? I just finished the original trilogy (1997 editions) and I really loved them, but I would love to see them as they were originally made. The only things that I really didn't like:

Jabba the hut scene in new hope stuck out like a sore thumb

That god awful jedi rocks song.

Throwing in hayden at the end of ROTJ.

I just bought the original trilogy on blu-ray and I'm kind of worried to see what was changed/added in that compared to the 1997 versions.

I actually wasn't really enjoying rotj very much until they got out of jabba's palace and then it progressively got better for me. First 2 are an easy 10/10 for me, rotj a 7/10, with a new hope being my favorite. All in all an amazing trilogy that I wish I would have watched sooner. Going to start the prequels soon.

These have been my exact thoughts on this all along. Luke saved Anakin. Anakin did not die when he turned to the dark side. Rather he suppressed any goodness he had had. This is what makes the Saga a story of redemption. The only way Anakin could be redeemed was if there was still something worth redeeming under the mask.

It is also the way Anakin perceives himself. He has probably never looked in a mirror since the maiming.

Each additional change was just another chance for Lucas to piss in everyone's cereal.

Couldn't have been the 1997 editions as Hayden didn't get added until after the prequels.

I'm guessing he saw the 2004 DVD below, which was the debut of that ill-advised change.

Hot off the press, from Empire's 301 best movies issue:

Quote:
Empire: The Episode IV Special Edition famously features Greedo shooting first...

Lucas: If I'd known what a big crazy thing it would be, I would have just left it alone. The people who like to think of Han as a cold-blooded murderer, they have their version. The idea was this guy is not a cold-blooded murderer, he is a scoundrel --that's different from being a murderer. I still don't think many people now can tell the difference. They don't know who shot first.

Why did it become such a big thing?

Because the fans have a modern morality which is, killing people is okay. The film is kind of old-fashioned. It's from the '30s and '40s, where the good guys don't kill people in cold blood. It was basically the same problem with Indiana Jones and the swordfight. When I saw it I thought "this is great", but it makes him an immoral jerk. Why would you shoot someone if you've got a gun and they've got a sword? But that's my morality getting in the middle of it all. The films are for young children. I think about things like that.
Hmmm. I said as much earlier in this thread (I think it was this thread): Lucas neutered Han in '97 with an eye on the prequels, because the only character who was supposed to be doing all that cold-blooded murdering was Anakin/Vader, and Lucas wanted to preserve that arc of tragic redemption purely for Anakin.

Still, his words about shunning this 'modern morality' ring hollow for the simple reason that he made Anakin into a cold-blooded murderer, and seeing as Clint Eastwood's anti-hero was busy gunning people down in Sergio Leone's movies in the '60s, it's hardly 'modern' either.

But thank Christ Indy still shoots first.
