You can also see shots from the new 4k master in their demo reel.

Looks WAY better than the current crap Bluray. Now the BIG question is if it is the Unaltered theatrical versions. I would guess it would have to be since the SE was done at 2K, but we'll have to see for ourselves!

I wonder, if they do release the remastered UOT, will it only be available on its own or will they also release some updated complete saga box set including both the unaltered and special edition versions of the OT as well as the PT?

Nope. That happened years ago. The WB stuff is still owned by WB and they can do what they want. One has nothing to do with the other.

But if you look at the other titles on their site, I don't see a lot of them "in the wild," so to speak.

And, just because I know people will be already interested...

I can see individual titles and box sets released. I'd imagine they'll push the restored cuts on their own, as the special editions have already been released (unless they restore them too).

Yeah, I realize the UOT on its own would pretty much be guaranteed, especially since a lot of the people who crave it just want to completely forget the special editions, prequels, etc. ever happened. But I hope they'd also release them with the other movies/versions. I wouldn't mind such a box set since I've held off on getting the previous one and it'd be nice if I could get everything at once.

After seeing those "restoration" screen shots, I doubt that is a restoration of the UOT. It appears to be of the original RGB scans of the Special Editions. If you read anything about the issues, those bright blues were not in the UOT and that shot in the desert with r2 and 3po has that horrible blue...I wouldn't hold your breath......

that's my thought. if these are restorations it's just new scans of the special editions

MMmm, not particularly impressed by that video, picture quality wise, looks rather poor. Lightsabers appear quite bad.

The restoration of Aliens is excellent, color-grading controversy aside, and if SW is indeed remastered to that degree of quality then I will be excited.

I actually would love a marvelous 4K restoration of the UOT but I would definitely prefer addressing some of the rough edges such as fixing garbage mattes for example. Simple and subtle fixes.

The current iteration of Lucas's tinkered versions deserve better representation as well. Current transfers have terrible baked in DNR and visual anomalies due to it, nevermind the screwed up contrast and color temp. As well the inconsistent visual effects fixes, looking at those damn lightsabers.

Also more dynamic mixes for ESB and ROTJ, in particular ESB which sounds rather loud and flat with a fair amount of distortion on a lot of sound effects. The remix of ANH on the BR is very well done in that regard.

Best regards,
KvE

They're quite specific about listing their projects (as far as I can see), The Simpsons is down as an Up-Conversion and Star Wars as a 4k, 16-bit Restoration. If they were making new versions of the special editions from the 2k masters wouldn't they list them as Up-Conversions?

Might be a bit of a leap with Star Wars - nothing says they are restoring it to the original state. Restoration might just mean getting it as good as it can look even if it is the revised version. I don't think we are going to see anything until the Fox deal runs out - why would Fox spend the money to do the originals when they will lose the right eventually?

Who cares just as long as it's released. It can even be bare bones for all I care....I would just rather have it all own its own personally. No reason to buy that other stuff.(IMHO)

Because there are millions to be made right now. A partnership with Disney would be extremely lucrative for both parties. Makes total sense.

For as long as Fox has home video distribution rights, you bet they'll want to milk every dime out of both trilogies.

Maybe a new 4k remaster of Goldeneye this year? And Cameron opened up True Lies to 1.78:1?

I heard on the James Bonding podcast from one of the hosts that potentially the first 20 Bonds are all being remastered to 4K. He watched the new remaster of The Living Daylights in a private screening room and was going to go back for more.

I did find it curious that True Lies was on HBO recently in 1.78:1. At first I thought it was cropped on the sides, but I'm not too sure, since The Abyss is being shown in 2.40:1.

Default Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Original & Prequel Trilogy - Sept 16, 2011 - Re...

New 4k restoration of Star Wars? Holy shitballs. I don't care if it's the SE or not, because those decrepit 2004 masters need to be laid to rest. Lowry/reliance now have a chance to put right what once went wrong, just like Sam Beckett. KMFDM's right about the sound mixes too, the new mix for Star Wars is fine but Empire's waaaay too overblown and harsh (not that that's got anything to with Lowry, but still) so it'd be great to have that reworked also.

I remember reading that no film negatives were made of the 2004/2011 Special Editions, they created just digital masters. In that case they'd could only give them a 4K Upscale. But since Reliance MediaWorks says that they're performing a 4K 16-Bit Restoration on the films they'd need the film negatives as the source. This could very well be a restoration of the Theatrical Cuts.

If they were restoring the Special Editions they'd have to use the 1997 Negatives and then I guess they'd have to map the 2004 and 2011 changes back in.

Huh. The one of C3PO is no contest, the image marked "Blu-ray" wins by a mile. The other shot, neither looks particularly desirable.

No, the original negatives were disassembled for cleaning as part of the 1997 restoration, and when they were put back together they slugged in the SE shots. Hopefully they stored the offcuts, if so then there's no reason why Reliance can't scan the trims and the bastardised negatives and put the original version back together digitally. A filmout of the restored version would be a nice bonus, for storage purposes.

What about the colour though? If the overblown pinks and blues are replaced with yellow and teal, would the internet explode?

Anyhoo, one other thing came to mind: it'd be AWESOME if Reliance erased the garbage mattes.
