But they can't scan the negatives because of all the special effects which come in later generations (at least on the OT). So they will probably scan the inter-positive which is at least two generations back from the release prints or an "internegative", however, those are still generations away from the camera negative. You have to remember that the special effects were done largely by making multiple passes of the camera and creating layers and layers of mattes. The multiple passes build up grain and then when these are put together in the optical printer, additional grain is created. I'm not one of these people who hates grain and I remember that when these films were originally presented in 70mm, they looked great (even though it was a blowup), but a special effects film made with the late 70s-early 80s technology is never going to look as crisp as a drama shot on a physical set with no optical effects.

As for Episodes I-III, I would imagine they'll simply retransfer the digital masters for the release "prints", perform some extra processing or color timing or fixing some efx they didn't like, etc., and use that. Hopefully, no new digital artifacts will result.

I really like the fact that they printed the frames one to a page at a full 2.35:1 aspect ratio. But there's a shot in that video where Lucas is turning the pages and you can see a "wave" in the pages, which looks to me like the page stock isn't thick enough, in spite of the obvious care taken with producing this.

I also don't like that Lucas' autograph is just a wavy line. It's like he became tired of signing the 1138 certificates, so he just moved the pen across the page.

I've always felt that it's extremely difficult to reproduce photography in print, even on expensively printed books. They just don't have the same impact as a photographic print. Look at any famous classic photograph in a quality book, then go see the same photo in a museum and you'll see the difference. The dyes in a well made color print don't translate to the printed page very well. As just one small example, you look at an Annie Leibovitz photo in a book and think, "yeah, it's okay", but you see it in an exhibition and think, "wow!". I think they should have chosen a smaller set, but actually printed them as photographic plates, especially at the $3K price.

And I can't help but feel that some subset of this will wind up in a future coffee-table book once the edition of 1138 is sold out. I also wonder if there are 1138 people who will buy these at $3K and whether some will buy these and then try to get $5K for them on eBay or whatever.

The thing that I don't like about spike tv showing the star wars films in hd on their feed is the sound is blasted way too loud and the picture quality is not as good as the dvds or even the hd broadcasts that where on HBO several years ago. So I think we can all agree that the picture and sound quality will be better on the blu-ray releases of all 6 star wars films than on those HD Broadcasts on Spike TV.

Probley to fix up the lightsaber's for the OT SE's and fix the color timeing for the OT SE's and episode 1 will have a digital yoda and a new digital transfer of the film on bd other than that not much is know what lucas will tweak next.

If there not as good as the DVD's, then how can they be classified as HD?

Yodi is one of my favourite characters and I really hope they don't stuff him up if they change him.

If you liked the CGI Yoda in E2 and E3, you should be ok with the change.

Since the puppet in E1 looked pretty bad. Even though it was molded from the original.

They're not entirely sure what happened. Though they did mention the old puppet had shrunk over time.

It's been awhile since I've watched the films, but I looked at a clip on Youtube and the puppet looked aweful. It looked to old. The CGI Yoda looks heaps better.

No. At least the last time Lucas commented on it, he's satisfied with the puppet Yoda in ESB and ROTJ.

Since that's the old close to death Yoda, he's not as spry and quick. So doesn't really need replaced.

I distinctly remember while production was still going on for Phantom Menace that Lucas had said the (then) upcoming Yoda would be a younger version. In all honesty, that never made a lot of sense to me as Yoda was around 900 years old at the time of Jedi. How much of a difference would there have been in a 30 or so year span?

I see no reason to replace the Empire/Jedi Yoda, especially considering that the Clones/Sith Yoda was purposely made to mimic the Empire/Jedi Yoda. The TPM Yoda has got to go though.

If we don't get all the versions on BD, I hope we at least get the original & most up-to-date verions... In other words, if they have to skip versions, they should skip the in-between stuff.
