Technically all that was part of the plan. He wanted the Trade Federation to fail in the end.

He wanted the power of being elected Supreme Chancellor. Which he was only going to get by having the dispute lead to the events they did. Once he had that, the Trade Federation was pretty much useless at that point. They were the means to the end. If their plans would have succeeded, they would have been yet another problem that needed to be dealt with eventually. Since he didn't want them in control of Naboo in the end.

Sure, but he apparently planned to have the Queen killed and elected based on the outrage over it, whereby he could publically castigate the Trade Federation and at the same time still privately encourage them to ferment the Separatist shebang.

He didn't want a Battle of Naboo at all, though and he was clearly trying to discourage the Queen from going back. Maul looks perfectly built to conduct the Jedi purge and his dying at Naboo wasn't part of the plan, either. He rolls with the punches, though, that's for sure.

Like I said before I am excited for the star wars films on blu-ray in fall of 2011. also I think it is important to preserved the original theatrical cuts of the original star wars trilogy from 77-83 for histrionical reasons. Those original theatrical cuts are a part of film history and they should be released on blu-ray. if only the special edition's of the OT are release on blu-ray alongside the prequel films I have no problem with that at all

No offense, but what on earth have you been smoking?

Everything was exactly according to Palpatine's plan.
Didn't you notice the slight grin of satisfaction when Amidala is leaving Coruscant for Naboo to fight back?

Palpatine didn't really take sides regarding the Trade Federation, Naboo or any of it. He may have pretended to, but he just wanted conflict, be it real or potential, so he could set himself up as savior and gain supreme control. Some were set up to look like the good guys & some were set up to look like the bad guys, but they were all Palpatine's pawns. The entire series of events were due to his manipulation. All of the players were pawns. This included Maul. It was of little concern who won individual skirmishes or who personally lived or died as long as there was that potential for all out war, because in the end, Palpatine would do away with them all, including the senate itself. Palpatine used & discarded pupils like underwear or dishrags. He gladly sacrificed DOOKU () for Anakin, just as he was planning on sacrificing Anakin/Vader for Luke. Dooku was probably the better right-hand man (at that point) anyway, as Maul was little more than a thug.

Did anyone of you catch AOTC in IMAX theaters back then, and if yes, what did it look like?

Yep. Palppy had all the strings pulling at the right times and it went just beautifully.

Maul was just a damned cool character. We wanted more of him in TPM and didnt get more. He ended up a thug but I feel he could have been so much more. Oh well.

Yeah, Maul was a very cool charcter. You can thank G.L. and his over-simplistic approach for what we ultimately got out of him (as a character). In my opinion, the same is true of Qui-Gon. Not only was the potential for that to be a great character, but it was perfectly cast. G.L.'s direction screwed that one up to the point where Lliam Neeson wouldn't even appear as a ghost in future films.

PS: You're off topic again, this is not a SW discussion/Prequel+GL bashing thread.

The prequels were terrible movies, though.

Didn't look anything like one of his cat-eating grins he usually breaks out in. It looked more like consternation to me. :dunno:

You sure bought into his kool-aid, though.

Eh? I recall Neeson saying he was specifically keeping his passport updated if he was needed. He hit a deer in his motorcycle, though IIRC and was pretty badly injured

I remember him saying how unhappy he was with how his part in the film was handled, and that he didn't want to return Maybe the next time I spot him in the bank or supermarket, I'll turn into that nosy fan I've always prided myself in not being, and see how friendly he is?

I'm THE ONLY ONE off topic? This is what the discussion is right now.

And I'm not bashing the PT. IF you were to read my posts, you would know that I support all of the Star Wars films equally. I was simply saying that the character of Qui-Gon could have & should have been so much more, along with that of Darth Maul. This entire discussion was born out of what we're hoping to see on the BD release, so it is not off-topic. If we are to talk about NOTHING except the actual BD release, then this thread needs to be closed because there is nothing to say except that the BDs are releasing in the fall of 2011... That is all we know for sure.

There, discussion is over.

LOL, the debate is never-ending. I was part of a Star Wars LiveJournal community during the release of the prequels and not one single person could agree on anything. Kinda funny.

I'm really looking forward to these. The DVD copies are fantastic so the HD versions should be amazing. Someone mentioned the OOT (original OT) being on BD, and it should be (one of these days, at least). The remastered versions don't bug me too much save for a few scenes (RotJ dance scene) but I'd definitely be interested in the older copies.
