As with most art if it doesn't look right it's usually 'wrong', so if your film looks 'wrong' just say it's experimental and all the actors looking in the wrong direction when speaking to each other was a bold artistic choice ...

If you claim that you don't recognize the majority of those names cited (Kael, Sarris, Canby, Maslin, etc.) and are ignorant to their importance to the world of film as critics, writers and commentators, then I can only assuming that you are either trolling really hard or you really need to stop posting here, go and educate yourself and come back when you know what you are talking about. As it stands, you are just making yourself look like a complete fool.

Not for nothing, but I don't even know those names.
That said, I have never listened to any critics other than my social circle.
And even then, we mostly talked about how the film was, wat interested us, what didn't and what we would do, if it was ours to make the story better, for us. We never told another in our group to not see a film. unless it was something like SpiceWorld.

SpiceWorld has some pretty funny moments. It gets a bad rap.

Fair enough, but unlike some other folks you're not on here viciously ripping into film critics and criticism in equal amounts of bitterness and ignorance. Even top filmmakers like and/or respect most of those critics cited. Pauline Kael's enthusiasm for Bonnie and Clyde helped boost its profile and make it a hit, and that's a film that had a great influence on much of what followed in the 70s.

Bile is fine but the ignorance is hard to take sometimes.

Bashing a decade or a specific filmmaker without bothering to see the best films from that decade or filmmaker is ridiculous. Pontificating about 'most critics' without reading them (or even knowing who many of them are) is similarly ridiculous.

Well, I submit that it's the other way around. Ignorance is fine, unless it's in on the part of angry people who can't admit it, which too often seems to be the case in these parts. And you're right. When we educate ourselves, everyone wins.

I think that was the Dolby EX thing...a matrixed back-center channel, not a discrete back-center channel. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were released in Dolby EX, if memory serves. I have a 7.2 system, and 5.1 and 6.1 mixes do that matrixing thing automatically for the back center rears. I don't own very many true discrete 7.1 discs.

All the prequel trilogy was released in Dolby Digital EX. Phantom Menace was the first film mixed in the format.

no but i'll listen to Kubrick's analysis of a movie over some phony critic any day. i'm not saying his analysis will be correct but at least he has some experience in the movie industry

Writers and directors are not foolproof and being successful doesn't make it good - there are a ton of crappy films that have made good money. I think if Sarah actually did some research and study on the man she might feel differently. I think......listen to some of his commentary tracks on Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Floating Weeds and Dark City. Believe me he was more than just a critic...not just anyone gets commentary tracks on such films.

Ebert was a damn fine writer, so it was worth reading his reviews whether you agreed with him or not. I didn't always agree with him, but I could often tell whether or not I would like a film based on what he said about it.

i have no problem with people who state clearly their opinion is there's only

pretty much every critic does that. if you notice at the bottom of every review it says very blatantly that everything written is their opinion etc...

plus, why should it matter if they say IMO or not? we already KNOW it's their opinion,

I agree with Sarah one at least one thing... Most reviewers and critics spout their opinion as if it were true. And most people take it as such. That is why you see, for example, the people who say Game of Thrones is nothing more than Porn and Beheadings. Because some critic said it once and the people who never watched it ever also say the same thing. I call these "Sheeple."
