Very unlikely. Maybe prequel spinoffs, but no reboots.

I think Disney and Lucasfilm will not be doing reboots or remakes much the same way Marvel isnt likely to do them. Feige has outright said they would like to avoid reboots and remakes and Kathy (Pres of Lucasfilm and the go between for Disney and Lucasfilm) doesnt strike me as the type to remake any of these films, and I have a hunch that Lucas forbid it as part of the deal.

My biggest peeve with ESB is with the insertion of the Imperial Shuttle sequence in the middle of the Falcon pursuit from Bespin. The "Hyperspace" cue is all cut up with the Imperial march. Not only is the music all broken up, but the constant tension of the scene is gone without the constant hammering of that cue.

Also bugged me the changing of "Bring my shuttle!" where he sounds pissed because of what just transpired and the outcome of his encounter with his son, to the "Inform the ship that my shuttle will be departing" or whatever he says (I've watched the original versions more than the new versions even after their releases). And he sounds all calm. Totally destroys the whole end of the movie.

They changed so many little musical cues in the series. I haven't watched the prequels enough to pick up all the changes, but there are some that are a matter of seconds like during the carbon freeze sequence. Still can't pinpoint the actual spot, but I think they added like 2 seconds just after they lift the slab out of the chamber.

Oh man, I hate that change in ESB. Vader's original line was so much better, the anger in his voice was excellent. I hate how the music is cut up (the Falcons whole escape from Cloud City really) and It drives me nuts that they used Death Star II footage from RotJ when Vader arrives back to his star destroyer.

Yeah, it's really bad in Empire. Every time I watched it, it just stands out so much.

What's the general consensus among Star Wars geeks here on the PQ quality of the original trilogy on blu ray?

I've been considering picking this up at Best Buy for $40, but I've read some differing reviews about the transfer--talk of bad color saturation and other things of this nature.

Is this a reference quality set?

...dramatically better than the dvd?

I think most people have been pleased with the BDs, they're the same masters used for the DVDs and while they had their problems for the most part they looked excellent. They're not huge upgrades but until they're rescanned at 4k or 8k they're the best way to watch the original trilogy.

The DVD was the LaserDisk, the Blu-Ray is the DVD

It is not a good looking set, nor does it sound good either.

Decade-old DVD masters done at 2K with crushed blacks and an aggressive blue shift with the color timing.

I wouldn't call it an aggressive blue shift, but it is certainly more present than it is on the DVDs.

The biggest issues have already been mentioned...older scans and not great color timing. There is also issues with some frozen grain and occasional edge enhancement which can give them a digital look.

There's room for improvement on the picture (mostly with the colors, as you mentioned, and some lightsaber shots), but they look great for the most part and certainly better than the DVDs which always looked too dark. Detail is excellent. If you have any type of sound system, they're worth picking up for the audio alone. The new mix on ANH is outstanding. Reference quality sound, IMO.

In my mind a image that is too sharp and video-like is the lesser of the 2 evils when compared to a image that is too soft and video-like.

I watched A New Hope tonight for the millionth time. I also laughed for the millionth time when the Stormtrooper bumped his head. I guess I am easily amused.

For me these blus were a revelation. I hadn't watched the originals since the special edition vhs tapes I bought in '98.

When I first saw the blus, wow. The detail blew me away. Scuffs and scratches on r2d2 were amazing (in the sense of the great detail). Having never seen the DVDs, I thought these were awesome.

Now if the restored...remastered or whatever versions come out, ya know I'll get it.

I've owned multiple vhs copies and I own the 04 and 06 original trilogy dvd releases and watched them many times and I was still impressed with the blu-rays. Are they the best the trilogy can look? Nope. Do they look good tho? IMO yes they look very good.

That being said, I can not wait for the inevitable 4K release. That's going to be something glorious.

They look way better than ever before. Only some garbage mattes are still visible, and some of the lightsabers haven't been fixed, but that's what they always looked like.
I think they are fantastic in both sound and picture quality.

Go for it.

How so? They actually toned down the ridiculously overblown colour for the Blu-rays, like with the Death Star explosion at the end of Star Wars not having that ridiculous blue wash any more. The colour's still too oversaturated in general though.

Star Wars' new mix is great, yep, but the other two are the same overly loud & clipped mixes from the DVDs, which is a pity.

Sure. But go back 13-14 years to when they were shooting it and digital acquisition didn't look anywhere near as pleasing as it does today. The images they were getting had such aggressive clarity and detail compared to the film-based acquisition of the previous SW movies (especially when they'd get to the print stage, which are fourth generation elements) that they had to filter it to get a hazier, more film-like look in terms of the sharpness.

Is it worth $40 for the dvd upgrade or should I just wait for a better transfer to come along somewhere down the road?

What if 10 people say: yes, all with good reasons...and 10 people say: no, all with good reasons?
