The source master is the same, it stems from the LaserDisk.
The LaserDisk porting needs to stop.
They need to go back to the original elements and rescan everything.
Only then will these look better.
Assuming they don't give it to Lowry again.

It is most certainly not the LD master.

Only the UOT "Bonus Discs" in the DVD reissue set used the LD masters.

As for only going 2K with the restoration...that has everything to do with the resolution of the Prequels when the footage was captured.
George Lucas thinks the original trilogy are inferior films?

Yeah...um...I don't think so.

I thought the special edition versions are on blu ray.

Are we talking about two different transfers?

If I buy the trilogy version that is mostly dark on the cover with a frontal view of Darth Vader, am I getting the same transfer as the versions included in the Complete Saga set?

I feel like Star Wars: Disney Milks The Cow would be more appropriate.

I don't think they're as big an upgrade as folks make out, as for the second part: bollocks. Frozen smeary grain, edge ringing, contrast that's too hot and wildly overblown colour are but a few of the problems. These 10-year-old transfers were done to look good on DVD (same goes for the jacked-up sound mixes, Ep IV aside) and it shows. There are still moments of wonderfully crisp detail, but mostly they look overly processed to the point of distraction to me.

Yes, because acquisition by Disney is the point where the milking started, right?

I wish these movies would be milked. They haven't been up to this point. I would like to see the originals properly restored (from 4K), then they can also properly restore the actual 1997 versions while they are at. I want to then dump my 2011 Frankstein'd mastered versions. New extras would be good too. Please Disney, milk these out!

Yep and there is a LONG list of movies from this era which look great (i.e, natural and film-like). They have no excuses here.

Yeah, considering how many times they were re-released on VHS with new transfers or new digital masters or whatever, the amount of new DVD and Blu-ray editions has been pathetic by comparison.

Have there been several repackagings? You betcha, but what studio doesn't do that with their biggest catalogue sellers? What I mean by "new" is new discs with new transfers and/or content, and on 5" disc we've had three in ten years: 2004 DVD, then the non-anamorphic OT DVDs, then the 2011 Blu-rays. That's it.

I want more milkage, dammit! They can start by releasing the restored OT on 4K Blu-ray next year...

The Phantom Menace got rid of the Pink Shift, but then everything was made to look like plastic/rubber/wax.

For every thing that they fix, they create 10 new problems across all 6 movies!

That's pretty much it, yep. Or rather they change more and more things that didn't need fixing (blinking Ewoks, making Jabba's entrance bigger) while ignoring the things that are crying out for a fix, like the incredibly obvious garbage mattes in Jedi (which stand out even more on the Blu-ray because the gamma's slightly lower compared to the DVD).

R2's magick rock, there, not there, there
Bespin's magick windows, there, not there
Jabba's magick door, huge, normal sized
Luke's 'Saber of a different colour, Blueish, white, green, white, blue, white, green, white

To be fair, the ever-changing lightsabers have pretty much always been like that (and even in the digital-up-the-wazoo prequels there are instances of them not always being the same colour from shot to shot). People loooooved to complain about Vader's pink 'saber in Jedi, and while the pumped-up colour saturation did those shots no favours, it was always there, even on the VHS versions. Many of the 'saber shots were actually outsourced back in the day which is where all the inconsistencies crept in, like whether they were a solid colour or had white cores, whether they had pointed tips or rounded tips, whether they visibly extended outwards upon being lit or just appeared (though that could be chalked up to Jedi user settings I suppose ).

IMO the lightsabers are the least of this set's issues.

except all press, media and toys had them as red, and our TV's were shite back then. It wasn't until DVD where we really noticed the Pinkness...

I also don't like Mace's pointed 'Saber
