Disney should release the unaltered Empire and Jedi in a box set with a disclaimer that they would have like to have released Star Wars but they couldn't. Then put the home phone number and address of the CEO of FOX inside.

Lately Disney has been terribly lazy with their releases. Back some years ago, be it blu-ray or DVD, the editions were the best, not only in picture, but extras. Lately they've been just re-issuing old masters and re-releasing old special features. But for some super special editions like Diamond, back when they were called Diamond because they were just that special, those had loads of very cool extras. I think in a saga like Star Wars, with such a hard job to remaster, and a sure-to-sell release, maybe Disney would release loads of extras, including all the old ones we haven't been seen since DVD, y'know, they do like to re-release classic DVD features on their stuff. I hope Disney does a good job. So far I trust them with this.

And yeah, of course, what you meant - they can release the movies with no problem, they just make a studio deal. Maybe with luck, we can even see the original Fox logos in the movies (they're part of the nostalgia and all fans love it.) with just a deal, it could happen. The biggest problem here is remastering the movies.

I don't know how many times I have to address this....Fox has a distribution contract through 2019. That means THEY WILL RELEASE WHAT LUCASFILM TELLS THEM TO RELEASE. THEY JUST GET A FEE AND A PERCENTAGE.

FOX DOES NOT CONTROL STAR WARS, THEY JUST GET THE DISTRIBUTION JOB WHEN LUCASFILM WANTS TO RELEASE THE FIRST SIX MOVIES, THEATRICALLY OR ON HOME VIDEO, AND NO, THEY DO NOT OWN A NEW HOPE, EITHER. LUCAS WON THAT BACK IN NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE PREQUELS.

Every other week I have to plow through this again...

Still holding out for that unaltered set of the original trilogy, which is why I still don't own the Star Wars movies on BR (not a fan of I - III). Really do hope Disney releases them next year in anticipation for Episode VII. I don't understand why they wouldn't, the money they would make would be huge.

So you mean to tell Disney can release the Original Trilogy with no problem of rights?

LUCASFILM can tell Fox they want to release the films, and Fox has to say, "Yes, Sir". And they'll be happy to do it because they get a fee and a percentage. Again....it's a distribution agreement. Think of it like a newspaper...a company is hired to DISTRIBUTE the newspapers, they get paid to do so. The distributor doesn't tell the newspaper they can't release a morning edition. The distributor says, "Yes, sir!" and gets the job done and gets paid.

There's no way they won't be released, whether sooner or later. Nobody in the world minus Lucas himself (who views the films in a way nobody else can) would keep the original films from being restored and released for people to purchase and watch. They're too important and culturally significant. If Disney can release them, they will be released.

And despite some people trying to tell you nobody gives a sh@# except for a few whiny internet nerds, you are correct: They will make a lot of money. Especially if they are great restorations with a boatload of extras.

And let more misinformation about this get spread? It's bad enough...and Ernest is 100% correct about Lucasfilm and distribution. It needs to be a sticky somewhere.

Incidentally, who currently owns rights to Droids, Ewoks, and The Ewok Adventures now? Fox still or Disney?

And it's 2020 when Fox loses the rights to I, II, III, V, and VI.

Spin your Blu-Ray of the movie and read the end credits. It now reads copyright LucasFllm, not copyright 20th Century Fox. The LA Times reported inside sources saying Lucas had regained control of the original Star Wars back in 1997 amid the build up to the prequels.

But the misinformation doesn't even matter. Who cares who owns what? This board can't do anything about it and the movies will get rereleased and released by whomever whenever.

The point is not what anyone can do about it. The point is about the facts of the matter. This is a discussion board last time I saw and I don't like to be misinformed about anything. I presume the vast majority of forum members don't either.

Even if Lucasfilm did still own IV, how come Fox have permanent rights after 2020 then? I mean yes, Fox co-produce IV, but it doesn't make sense that Lucasfilm owns it if Fox have perpetuity rights.

But if this is true and yet Fox permanently owns it, then this brings back to a point I made; Fox could theoretically make a deal to own permanent (or renew) distribution rights to the other 5 films.

Disney would NOT have bought Star Wars without some sort of stipulation that they get A New Hope as well after 2020 along with the other 6.
The big news was that it was sold to Disney, but there was way more going on the scenes than we will or should ever know about.
So they made a deal with Fox as well.
If Episode 7 has the Fox Fanfare, then we know what part of the agreement is.
****
Disney probably let Fox distribute the new Star Wars films until 2020, when they gain back all the Distribution rights in exchange for Distribution Rights for Episode 4.

Episode 7 will not have the Fox fanfare. Disney has no reason to pay Fox to use that Fanfare or to allow Fox to distribute 7. It doesn't benefit the film nor the profits in any legitimate way. And Fox has no claim over the new films and never did so there is no reason to think Disney had to make any deal with Fox in regards to the new films. Disney will distribute the new star wars films just like they distribute the Marvel films. And the films will open with the Lucasfilm logo and only the Lucasfilm logo just like the Marvel films open with only the Marvel logo.
