I've suffered through the indignities of George Lucas' hubris for far too long. Give me my g'damned UOT remastered on Blu ASAP!

Uproar here: absolutely. Uproar in the general market? Maybe not. BD sales sucked in 2014.

Well, I got this as a gift.
I haven't watched it yet though.
Not sure when I will.
Though, I really want to....
Fist though, I need to find the DVD of Return of the Jedi.

1. Do you have proof?
2. One bad year does not mean the demise of a format. If it was a bad year for sales maybe it is because the economy is falling back into the crapper and the majority of the movies that came out in 2014 just aren't worth owning.

Definitely. I'm also thinking about the uproar from fans (myself included ) if they released only the original cuts.

NO! They don't. Check the copyright -- it's now copyright LucasFilm, Lucas got ownership in exchange for tv rights and a distribution agreement for the prequels. God, every ten pages we go through this.

Fox has a DISTRIBUTION contract through 2020. That's it.

Don't need a website. All of the films are now copyright LucasFilm LTD. Check your Blu-Ray credits. Right there in plain sight.

The Walt Disney Company is now the parent company of LucasFilm Ltd. Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox has a distribution agreement on the first six films which expires in five years.

Every movie has a copyright notice like that at the end. Most are attributed to defunct companies or limited liability companies that were made to produce that single film only..

It has little to no bearing on who actually controls the film decades later.

Except when the copyright changes from, you know, a studio like 20th Century Fox to LucasFilm LTD in 1997. Hardly defunct companies.

I found the article from Back in October where they talk about Digital Distribution.
Granted, it is speculation, but the advert makes it's argument.
Quote:
The Star Wars movies have been reissued time and time again in various forms. They’ve been on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and Blu-ray, but now that the bounds of physical media are breaking down, it’s likely that the saga could now be headed to digital platforms. Film Divider came across an Italian TV spot for Disney’s digital service that includes games, apps, and yes, movies. And to showcase the movies, they used clips from Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and A New Hope. With the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode VII and Disney now owning Lucasfilm, there’s a hope among fans that they’ll get Blu-rays of the original editions of the original trilogy. It would be nice to see this ad as a hint that these HD original editions are coming, but we’re still a ways off.
Hit the jump for more and to see the ad.

First, it’s very important to know that 20th Century Fox owns A New Hope. There’s no way to make a big, new, box set featuring non-special edition cuts without their participation. There’s plenty of money on the line, and some deal will probably be worked out eventually, but when it is, there will be some massive announcement, not a couple clips on an Italian ad promoting Disney’s digital site.
But releasing these movies on digital is still a big deal. People are giving up physical media and getting their digital movies on iTunes, Amazon, etc. They want to watch Star Wars on a tablet or smartphone. Disney wants to compete with UltraViolet, and so they’re pushing their online digital copy service, Disney Movies Anywhere. If Star Wars shows up on a digital platform, that’s where it will be.
However, the case remains that there’s still legal wrangling when it comes to A New Hope, and while I’d love it if the original trilogy got an HD, original edition release, I’m not expecting it to happen tomorrow.
Here’s the ad [via Film Divider]:
And here’s their translation of the narration:
Quote:
Enter Disney’s magical world, with the brand new site disney.it. All your favourite Disney characters await you, including the most engaging TV series and plenty of exclusive videos and content. Amazing apps and games and a online community to share your passions. All of this, simply from any PC, tablets or smartphones. Carry the Disney’s magic always on you.

Fox does NOT OWN STAR WARS. They have DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS, meaning when LucasFilm wants to release the film, Fox gets the job. THAT'S ALL.

Fox's ownership is for the movie itself. That's it. It doesn't give them merchandising rights or sequel rights. Fox can't release a Star Wars coloring book or their own competing Star Wars sequel.

But the movie itself is theirs.

I thought Lucas got back the rights in 1997-99 as part of the deal for Fox to distribute the Prequels?
