The only thing that sucks about the Marvel comics deal is that all the Dark Horse material is going immediately out of print, which coupled with DH's already sporadic TPB supply, will make catching up and completing collections all the more expensive.

Bought the PT trilogy set. Was going to just buy ROTS from eBay for $15 but thanks to a gift card and a coupon I was able to get the whole trilogy new for $18.

But they'll probably reissue them under Marvel though, right?

Marvel has already announced three new epic collections reprinting Dark Horse material. I'm sure they will reprint as much as possible so they can "cash in" on having the license again. I own all the original Dark Horse stuff and can't bring myself to buy it all over again. I like the new variant artwork for the number one issue but there's no way i'm hunting down all that. Just another cash grab. I'll wait for the obligatory-cash-grab trade that has all the number one variant covers in one book.

Also, if you are looking for good prices on the dark horse trades, try instocktrades.com. They are better priced than any comic shop and have an excellent selection. I completed my star wars collection just a few weeks ago with them.

The thing I read said there were going to be close to a hundred variants, I'm glad it 's a reasonable amount. I find they can go overboard with the numbers instead of providing something interesting to offer.

They had a digital sale not long ago, the complete collection was pretty reasonable for the content on offer (but still expensive!).

Right, because you still need a good/better reference point.

That's the old school Technicolor process, but Technicolor dye transfer prints were already a rare thing in the late 70's, and pretty much non-existent in the 80's and beyond.

That said, I did read somewhere that Lucas had a dye-transfer print of Star Wars in his personal collection, so color separations did exist at one time, and may still.

First I've heard about that, although I'll admit it's been quite a while. Last time I read on the subject was Dark Horse basically saying "we don't know what will happen and we're not happy about it."

Edit: Okay, I found it. Of course I meant physical trades and omnibuses, not digital packages.

Marvel is set to publish brand-new "Star Wars" comics starting in early 2015, but that doesn't mean the vast library of "Star Wars" material published by Dark Horse Comics will disappear. Marvel announced Wednesday via StarWars.com that "Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Empire Vol. 1" is scheduled for release in April 2015, featuring multiple stories previously published by Dark Horse. And things won't stop there -- Marvel said they're looking to "collect full unbroken runs" of multiple past Star Wars stories.
"The Empire Vol. 1" is slated to include "Star Wars: Republic" #78-#80, "Star Wars: Purge" #1, "Star Wars: Purge - Seconds to Die" #1, "Star Wars: Purge - The Hidden Blade" #1, "Star Wars: Purge - The Tyrant's Fist" #1-#2, "Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Lost Command" #1-#5 and "Star Wars: Dark Times" #1-#5. Each story is from the past decade of Dark Horse's "Star Wars" run, and take place in the aftermath of 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." The collected edition will include work from creators including writers John Ostrander, Randy Stradley, Haden Blackman and Alexander Freed; plus artists Luke Ross, Douglas Wheatley, Jim Hall, Chris Scalf, Marco Castiello, Andrea Chella and Rick Leonardi. The volume is slated to contain 440 pages, with a $34.99 cover price.
"We're thrilled to be bringing our innovative Epic Collections to a galaxy far, far away," Marvel SVP sales and marketing David Gabriel said in the announcement. "We'll be bouncing around to different periods of Star Wars history with each Epic Collection, constructing one huge tapestry, collecting full unbroken runs of all the greatest Star Wars comics from the past 35 years."
The "Star Wars Legends" branding is the new name for what was formerly known as the "Expanded Universe," following Lucasfilm's decree earlier this year that the stories under that designation -- dating back to 1978 novel "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" -- were no longer canonical.
Dark Horse's final Star Wars comics were published this month, after a 23-year run starting with "Dark Empire" in 1991.
Marvel's initial crop of new Star Wars material will start with a "Star Wars" series by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday scheduled for January 2014, followed by "Star Wars: Darth Vader" from Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca out the following month, and "Star Wars: Princess Leia" by Mark Waid and Terry Dodson, slated for March. Marvel reacquired the Star Wars license -- the original Star Wars comics were published by Marvel in the 1970s -- after Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm put both Marvel and Star Wars under the same corporate umbrella.

I found that, too, so never mind, I suppose. I'd still prefer if what DH made stayed with them.

I dunno, I still find something indistinctly frustrating about the whole thing but I don't know where to direct my anger.

Comixology, Marvel's digital service, also has started selling the digital stuff that belonged to Dark Horse. They don't have "everything" listed yet, but i'm sure they will catch up quickly. It's priced higher than when Dark Horse had the farewell sale though. While Dark Horse's sale was going on you could get the entire Dark Horse Star Wars Collection for $300. Over $2700 worth. If i didn't already have all the hard copies i would have gotten that. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

I'm glad I bought up all of the Dark Horse Omnibus collections. To hell with reading comics on a computer.

+1!
As a collector, if I can't: hold/touch/admire it whenever I want, then I don't want it.

Having a tablet is a game-changer. The quality and resolution is superior to even the highest-quality printed books. You have stuff like zoom and guided view that give you a much better view of the artwork. Obviously a tablet is heavier than a single issue of a comic but most of them are lighter than your average trade. Once you set about reading more than a single issue any benefit of reading a floppy is out the window.

Then you have stuff like digital distribution, having access to your whole collection etc. and there are a lot of benefits.

You can't roll up a tablet and put it in your back pocket.
You don't have the "comic scent" from a tablet.
You don't have the "comic feel" with a tablet.

You could tape a comic to your tablet, that's 2 out of 3 covered.

They're already working on flexible screens to do what you're hoping with #1. I'd say it's at least a decade away but who knows, we seem to be progressing exponentially, a decade ago we had Nokia brick phones, now we have the power of a computer in our pocket.

I can put my phone in my back pocket and with the zoom I can still probably see any given panel of artwork larger and with greater resolution than any printed book.

The other stuff is nonsense. I'm sure there are people who have nostalgic attachments to the smell and feel of VHS tapes and audio cassette tapes too.

It isn't nonsense.
