No OT STAR WARS film was 5.1 on release.
Whatever. You don't have to watch movies in 5.1 at all.

My ideal versions of the OT would be the ultimately best renditions of the pre-97-11 tweaks but with modern restoration techniques that addresses the rough edges that were never intended to be visible to the viewer.

Having the various mixes would be interesting but not mandatory. I wish ESB and ROTJ received as nice a remix as ANH did for the BR release. Great fidelity and dynamic range, whereas the other two still have issues with various sounds suffering from excessive compression/clipping.

I would also welcome the 2011 version with additional improvements that addresses some of the now really dodgy CGI bits, fixed color timing, fix remaining issues-oversights-screwups, and rectify the universally despised changes.

[Show spoiler]1. Han shoots Greedo, the end. No shooting first, Han simply anticipates and responds accordingly to the likely scenario.

2. Remove the Jabba scene in ANH.

3. Reinstitute the full blast shots/squibs.

4. Have a better Obi Wan Krayt Dragon sound effect.
-Likely a few other tidbits for ANH.

5. Original Boba Fett vocals.

6. "Lucky you don't taste very good." line restored.

7. Make all the appropriate Bespin windows actually see through.
-Again likely other tidbits.

8. No on the Vader "NNOOOOoooooooo!"

9. Fix the newly oversized Jabba palace door.

10. Get rid of HC's Force ghost.
-Once more I'm sure I have a few personal dislikes but these are some of my stand outs.

Unlike some folks I have never held the corrosive soul consuming vitriol towards George Lucas for some of his superfluous adjustments to the OT for a myriad reasons.

Mainly life is too short to be so riled up about ultimately inconsequential things. There are far too many positive improvements to the OT to be sacrificed to the altar of insatiable fan outrage.

Finally GL has done far more positive things in general that are never justly factored and balanced in the equation for some excessive extreme purists.

Besides, he continues his long time commitment to furthering education, donating to the tune of over 4 billion dollars. Not a lot of people have done anything similar.

Never mind that he permitted and established the premise of fans being able to create their own stories in various media. Within certain constraints but still he did not pursue the typical unduly excessively protective legal wrangling that studios often exert.

By no means am I arguing that GL is perfect, plenty of evidence that demonstrates some of his weaknesses -PT cough, but aside from some curious indulgences he has created a positive universe to enjoy and play in.

Best regards,
KvE

PS In addition to the excellent Making of Star Wars books by J.W. Rinzler, folks should also read the recent, How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise by Chris Taylor. All great reads that will help one better understand the "Creator".

PPS To be clear I am in favor of the GOUT to be available in the most pristine rendition possible.

5.1 would still be an alteration. Discrete 4.2 (L-C-R-S + baby booms) are the 70MM mixes.

Oh please. It's just the fact that if you TRULY want "unaltered" no 5.1, period. You can have 4.2 + 2.0, or for the first film add an additional 1.0.

True. They were all 4.2. I would gladly take a 4.1 lossless soundtrack faithful to the original 70mm mix. And I would want the Dolby Stereo 2.0 tracks for each film as well, since it was the mix on every pre-THX VHS and laserdisc release. That was the mix I grew up on. And heck, if they want to throw in the specialized mono mix for Star Wars, yeah, I'll take that too. Why not?

For ALIEN and ALIENS Fox offered the original tracks on Blu-ray: the 5.1 remix in DTS-HD MA and the original 4.1 and 2.0 mixes in Dolby Digital. They've been pretty good about that starting on DVD. It's always interesting when they have alternate versions. ENEMY MINE has some different sound effects and music cues in the 4.0 mix vs. the 2.0.

Paramount took a different tack with their STAR TREK films, using the 70MM tracks as the basis for the 7.1 remixes on II-V. STAR TREK II's 35MM had a tight dialogue in the center channel but the 70MM bleeds to all speakers. STAR TREK III is the opposite: the 35MM bleeds everywhere but the 70MM is properly centered. Unfortunately the BDs don't offer both versions.

No, because Yoda tells Luke that -- through the Force -- he will see the past and the future and friends long gone. Leia is Force-sensitive, she had visions of her mother. Images. Feelings.

Case closed. Easy-peezy.

But how can a newborn infant - exposed to her mother for a few minutes at most immediately after birth have any memory of her mother? How her mother was beautiful? That is stretching it - even being force sensitive. I cannot buy into that. It is revisionism and a bit of screw-up IMO.

Luke says "real mother" and Leia says "she dies when I young." It infers that Leia knows she is adopted and that her mother died when she was a kid. Not 3 seconds after giving birth to her. If she saw images and had force feelings how would she even know who the woman was? Makes about as much sense as some young guy showing up at the end of Jedi with a smirk on his face.

Her description was pretty vague, so the baby force thing could still work, albeit awkwardly. If she had said her mother died when Leia was a small child then that would be a major screwup. But very young could mean anything.

So before ROTS came out, did you always imagine Padme would die minutes after giving birth? No reason to defend plotholes.

Just received an email notification that my Sideshow 1/6 scale R2D2 will ship out on Friday. He comes with the Leia hologram and table and all the arm attachments, Luke's lightsaber and the bar from Jabba's Palace. What he doesn't come with is his rockets that let him fly around like the Millennium Falcon from the prequels.
