Not buying!

Not that I'd buy it to begin with anyway...

If it was 1:1 scale... then maybe...

But with the matt lines standing out like a sore thumb through out the whole move ruin the enjoyment of the movie for you?

Matte lines around the ships and the Rancor still look better than the CGI Jabba in Star Wars and the changed creatures in Jedi Rocks.

When Disney is done with their restoration work, the original "unaltered trilogy" should be available with the 4.1, 2.0, mono, and a brand new 7.1 sound mix. Knowing the audio industry is now pushing a new DTS and Atmos brand, they might as well throw in those mixes as well. I also think they should provide (as a seperate option) the early 90's special editions which only modified some background CGI, etc. to modern standards (unlike the later ones that tinkered with actors, entire scenes, etc.)

... and issue them on 4K Blu-ray discs day one.

I doubt all of that will happen, but it might finally be enough to please just about everyone.

Edit: Forgot that they originally planned to do 3D conversions on the whole trilogy but it was entirely scrapped. To please the 3D fanbase, they should do 3D conversions as well. But of what edition? (Or all of them?) Something tells me this might happen though... unfortunately, given it would be a long/expensive project and LucasFilm scrapped the idea based on the poor performance of The Phantom Menace 3D.

Granted, I would imagine a lot fewer people caring about 3D prequels than the original trilogy in 3D.

Well, it's reported already that they are being done in 4K as restorations.

However, I agree and strongly feel these should be early 4K Blu-ray discs. Since these won't hit the market until around the time 4K Blu-ray is debuting as a format it makes perfect sense and would be a huge marketing tool for the format.

To clarify further, I think they should release the 4K restorations on regular Blu-ray and on the upcoming 4K UHD Blu-ay format. I can maybe see them trying to wait on the actual 4K discs because they will feel it's too early (and would rather push a massive re-buy to people later down the road) but I seriously hope that doesn't happen.

It didn't do poorly!
Go back and do a bit of research on it...

Yup! 1:1, or even 1/4, are the way to go.

Regardless of how much money it made for LucasFilm, the point was that LucasFilm felt it did poorly and was not worth the investment.

The reported reason was, to quote: "Disney wants to focus only on “rebooting the franchise” with three new Star Wars films."

The re-release in 3D of The Phantom Menace made less than 50 million. For a Star Wars film re-release. Considering the marketing costs associated and the fact that it was Star Wars, this was considered disappointing. Obviously, for a normal movie that's pretty decent (if not outstanding) but I think they thought it was a poor response for such a big franchise. They don't want to continue with the prequel re-releases right now and would probably feel like they had to do the other two prior to doing the original trilogy. Add in that they are mainly invested in making new Star Wars films, which could bring billions in for Disney/LucasFilm, and it's pretty clear they scrapped plans because they didn't think it was worth it financially.

I think they should still do it at some point but Disney sees it as a wasted opportunity/investment right now when they just want to branch out to filmmakers for their proposed "one new Star Wars universe film a year" idea. Which having a 3D release each year of one of the classic films would be a thing getting in the way of that (in their perspective), and they also seem to want to distance Episode 7 from the first 3 (well, the prequels...)

Except for the fact that the conversions were more or less complete. They were scheduled for release right up until the Disney sale.

I grew up seeing UOT in theatres in the 70's early '80's, matte lines never bothered me. I'll take SE Jedi over UOT Jedi any day of the week just on the basis that there is NO stupid Ewok song at the end. Loathe that song. Seeing what Jedi in '83, was one of the most disappointing movie experiences ever. I've only come around to it within the past 18 years. Still worse than the prequel trilogy, which is light years better. Although having initially liked Sith a great deal, I find that one the most frustrating to watch.

Phantom, Clones and Sith were finished.
Hope was mostly done
Empire was roughly half done and
Jedi was still in the very early stages of conversion.

One reason a UOT release alone may be pointless.

They were only showing it in 2D (this was 2002 if I recall) and it was cropped.

Huh? The Phantom Menace 3D grossed over 100 million worldwide at the box office, I believe the only other theatrical 3D re-releases to cross the 100 million dollar mark were Titanic and The Lion King.

The OT films will be released as an IMAX event this Fall. Maybe in 3D, maybe not. Calling it now.
