But I'm not going to have a hissy fit. Heck i got STAR WARS on VHS for a christmas present. I saw the original trilogy unaltered at a friends house. Ironically that year the ?1997? versions hit theaters. Then two years later we get Ep 1.

So unfortunately I don't have that strong hold as many member of the site have to the originals. Don't get me wrong, I love the originals. Its just what ever version I see first is the one that I hold on to the most. I guess I didnt see the changes made to the original trilogy. that wasn't until 2004, where I watched the original trilogy, 1997, and 2004 versions, back to back over a weekend. To me you can't beet the original, however, to me the 1997 is my original trilogy. After the revisions from 04, you can't watch the 1997 with the Pre-trilogy.

That's just thought. Don't though hate my way. I was young at the time of the 97 versions.

RI
I was young also, I didn't get to see the original trilogy till I found them at my grandpa's house when he died. They were 1994 copies on VHS. My first Star Wars movie was Episode 1. I loved it so much, that my dad bought me the gold "Special edition" 97' versions VHS boxed set of the Original Trilogy. I have watched them thousands of times, and of course I saw Episodes 2 and 3 in theaters, and have collected all the DVD versions at this time. I am what many call a "new generation" Star Wars fan, but I love all the movie versions. and I have to agree, once you see the 2004 versions, you can't really go back, It's like with the LOTR extended versions, it's hard to go back to the theatrical versions.

Yep and again they were made for tube tvs, that's why you said 4:3 letterbox.

They should have been anamorphic (hence all the fuss).

In 2004 the dvds were anamorphic, so the 2006 release of the originals should have been too.

Ya, I know, but we can hope if he releases them on blu-ray they will be anamorphic and finally people will stop complaining, and Star Wars fans alike will be in peace, hopefully, lol!!

If I end up picking it up, I'll probably take some time before I watch them and possibly in an unoriginal ordering. I'll mix them up and watch the movies at random over a few months ...

I've watched the Star Wars movies so many times, I cannot sit through an entire day watching Star Wars.

I personally just want them on blu-ray because I'm tired of seeing them on DVD and I'd rather have pristine picture and, hopefully, 7.1 surround sound.

Star Wars will be awesome on blu-ray and I'm glad George will bring them to us a lot earlier than he did with the DVDs!
I too would Love to get this set in 7.1 Audio (DTS-HD MA to be exact ).

But aside from the news in about 12 hours from now, I wonder how much of the Exact Specs will be released (audio info, list of extras, msrp, cover art, design of the set, photos and/or video teaser of the set, etc.)

7.1? That's being really hopeful.... but it would be nice

I think most likely is DTS MA 5.1 on all of them.

Yea, 7.1 is Hopeful, but I hope he goes more than the usual standard Dts MA 5.1 or Dolby True-HD 5.1 soundtrack.

Even That would be better than the normal 5.1 (see above).

The problem was they were not anamorphic widescreen, which meant that yes, you can "zoom" in the picture, but because you loose so much of the image due to the burned in letterbox the quality when blown up on an HDTV is quite atrocious.

It reminds me of the (rather valid) point some people used to make about Laserdisc. While we all know OAR is the way to go, at the time people complained about how here you have this format with higher resolution and you spend a third of of on black bars (meaning the quality of the actual picture in terms of lines was pretty close to VHS).

It's much the same watching non-anamorphic DVDs on HDTV's. It's why it was so painful when I put "Evita" in my DVD player after I got one and was crushed. Non-anamorphic, didn't look much better than VHS (and though it may have had slightly more lines, the digital noise obvious when you zoom like that makes it feel even worse).

The problem is, Lucas is right. It would be very costly to put the Classic trilogy on Blu (though, I am glad even he has taken to calling it the Classic trilogy, versus the "workprint" verbiage he used to use post-SE) because the original film elements no longer exist in their original form. Using what seems like rather archaic 90's technology they literally had to splice up the original film to make the SE's (and presumably though the parts still exist, they could piece it back together, except for the frames at either end of each splice, which have been lost forever).

All that said, I think most people would be happy if they just took a later generation film print, scanned it in, and called it a day. Would it make the super-freakies happy? No, but those reasonable among us would be.

I'm very interested in the announcement today - finally, some bit of information. I don't hold my breath that any changes will be made to the decision to not include the Classic versions, but I do believe we will see them in HD in some form, some day.

Actually the novelizations of

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi

would not please the "I want the original only" fans. The novels have stuff that were never included in the movies

For the most part, with the advent of DVD/BD. Most popular films have been revisted/re-edited by the director and released to the applause of the fans. Even at times where the "new" version is preferred. I could list many films where the new director approved version is highly regarded over the theatrical release....EXCEPT when it comes to the OT!

I've been a SW fan since I was 7. Had all the toys, read all the books, watched all the films in their various forms. I don't consider myself an expert or the Alpha/Omega when it comes to SW, but I do think all the "fans" complaining about Lucas tampering with his own films is ridiculous. For better or for worse I'm excited to watch the OT in whatever form is available to me. Do I agree with all the changes? No, but it has never detracted from my enjoyment of the films. I do think that overall most of the changes were for the better.

Again, this is all just my opinion.
Yep.

If they really redid Yoda as CGI using the ROTS model in TPM, they'd also have to use the ROTS model for AOTC, otherwise it would very odd.

I hope they are doing that, as the ROTS Yoda is my favorite by far!!!!!!

Unlikely. It's Fox releasing and they have consistently used DTS-HD MA (I can think of maybe one Fox title with Dolby TrueHD) so I'd be very surprised if they did.

With that in mind I am hoping for a 6.1 mix. Having said that, Lucas is re-releasing the films in 3D so if they've gone to the trouble of converting the films then it makes sense to update the sound mix and as such a 7.1 track would be very nice! I suspect that'd be unlikely though but one can hope.

The difference is that other directors have also released the theatrical cuts of their films, properly represented with whatever director approved additions come along within their sets.

Lucas hasn't and that's why it's been bugging people. No one's saying he can't have his "Special Editions". Their argument is that the theatricals should be included as well.

The only reason why it's such a big deal within this case is because of what the Original Trilogy did to the industry...especially the first film.

Now, I'll never watch the theatricals again, after having witnessed the Special Editions. I just prefer those than the theatricals. But, I do think the theatricals should be included...for historical purposes.

Lucasfilm usually goes with Dolby, but THX 1138 has DTS-HD MA so maybe they're open to DTS now. Don't really matter to me as long as it's lossless, my only hope is for it to be 6.1/7.1 discrete or at least EX/ES matrix.
