The original effects elements were initially shot on Vista Vision negative, and if what we've seen from Harmy's version is any indication, I'd say the original version and it's effects hold up remarkably well under the scrutiny of HD.

And honestly, I think the CGI additions form 1997 already look more dated than the original effects.

99% of the effects should hold up just fine. Even the much-maligned 'Vaseline smudge under the landspeeder' will be fine.

The real 'be careful what you ask for' sticking points are much more mundane. In addition to all the content changes and effects changes that (quite reasonably) get a lot of attention there were also color timing changes and other pervasive visual changes that most people don't really think about. Until they change back, anyway.

That's funny, as it was Disney that perpetuated that myth ... by herding lemmings off cliffs in the first place!

We now need a .GIF showing scruffy nerf-herders been tempted to their doom by shiny UOT Blu-rays.

I for one am 100% behind a "warts-and-all" release in HD.

And what's really funny about that is when they tried to fix it, they just ended up shaving off the bottom of the speeder. I mean for God's sake, if you're gonna fix something, then at least do it right. At least with the orange blob, you could explain it away as the speeder starting to short out or something, but how the hell do you explain why the bottom of the speeder disappeared?

Hey, in Walt's defense, nature experts said the Lemming legend was real, that it happened, so he hired a Canadian team to go film it -- and when it didn't happen, the film team just ran a bunch of lemmings off a cliff, and into the ocean. Walt wasn't out there with blow-horns and whips herding rodents to their deaths.

I don't mind that at all.
I would love to have the original trilogy with all the errors, roughness etc.

One big reason I want the unaltered OT is so John Williams original music re-instated to it's state pre-special edition. I want the bongo music when Luke and Obi-Wan arrive in Mos Eisley, I want the take off from Bespin music uninterrupted by stock music when they go to those stupid cuts to Vader landing on his super star destoyer (the stock footage from Jedi's opening), I want Lapti Nek not Jedi Rocks, and I want Yub Nub!

It's kind of mindboggling how not-seamless the "fixes" in the SE are. The disappearing-reappearing windows on Bespin, the fact that they didn't bother to take out the traveling mattes around the Tie Fighters in ANH...you'd think a pioneer in visual effects like Lucas would actually fix the things he was trying to "fix." Even if the changes were seamless I'd want the original version released, but the sloppiness of some of the new effects is embarassing.

The problem with the special editions is that really they were just a tech demo for Lucas to get ready for the prequels. Like you say the fixes were half- hearted, and some of them created even more continuity errors. It was probably much cheaper and commercially successful to use the original Star Wars films as a digital playground instead of putting out more failing crap like Radioland Murders (that seemed made just so he could try out digital mattes) and Young Indiana Jones.

Lucas couldn't even be bothered with making Luke's lightsaber on the Falcon consistent. That would have taken time away from magical rocks and making the Ewok blink. You know, important things.

But he added Sebulba to Jabba's Palace, or his cousin...or his nephew.

Maybe the blinking ewoks "rhyme" with something from Revenge of the Sith. Did Jimmy Smits blink a lot in that film?

I do recall reading something about that in Kaminski's secret history of star wars article.

The vudu release:

A couple of things that have gone unnoticed because of the usual sabre swinging in here.

1. Didn't fox own distribution rights for every film until 2020? Looks like for 5 out of 6, that issue has been quietly settled

2. Due to this, no need for the fox fanfare on 5 out of 6. We will be seeing very soon what disney will be doing here for these and future films. Now that is a change I will object too.
