I watched the Prequels a few days back and posted my thoughts on them so I just finished the Special Edition of A New Hope and overall the changes don't make me dislike the film.

The added rocks are just stupid and make no sense. I also dislike the new Obi-Wan scream but it doesn't ruin the scene.

I like the new Obi-Wan hut and wouldn't even notice it wasn't originally in the film if I hadn't watched the theatrical versions so many times.

The opened up Mos Eisley and added stuff isn't as offensive as I remember. The added digital creatures inside the bar were a bit distracting when it would go from CGI to dude in a mask to CGI. Still doesn't ruin the scene.

The Han/Greedo scene looks a lot better than what I remember from the DVD set and the added Jabba, while not needed, doesn't look as bad either.

I liked and found the Falcon take off from Mos Eisely to be better.

Still wish they would have made Luke's lightsaber blue when training on the Millennium Falcon.

Liked the new eylid/blinking for the creature in the trash compactor.

Liked the language being changed from English to whatever they use in the galaxy far far away when Ben disables the tractor beam.

Really enjoy the added stuff to the Death Star run.

Chewy still gets screwed out of a medal. Unforgivable.

Going to go get some lunch and then on to The Empire Strikes Back.

It's largely an exercise in anti-climax and morose philosophy, but it's just so skillfully crafted and -- dare I say it -- profound.

Or, if you think it's more "pretentious" than "profound", you have to admit it's unique and well-made with some ludicrously juicy dialogue. Sometimes that's enough.

Speaking of Scott directing a Star Wars movie, looking at The Counselor, can anyone imagine just how soul-destroying ROTS might've been with him at the helm?

At least they corrected one of the shots.

I really like the fact that the force fanfare was restored during the trench run and the weird blue haze around the Death Star was removed.

The thing that bothers me the most is the black crush and the frozen grain.

That black crush is brutal.

There's literally hardly any shadow detail.

It's just thick black blobs and nothing more.

It's a shame that the rumoured unaltered BD's never came to fruition.

Than again it's not surprising.

I can't comment on PQ because I just have a 37 inch Sony that I have calibrated to my preferences.

Fair enough.

The flaws of the transfers are really noticeable on a larger, calibrated screen.

I'm fully confident they will come out-- I think people were just hoping it would be sooner and that they would have been immediately working on them the second Lucas signed over the brand so they could put them out before Episode VII.

And honestly that would have been a great idea-- restore the originals and even re-release them in theaters to hype up the new movie (as if it needed it). However, we don't really know what's going on-- maybe it's taking a lot of time and effort to get the films up to snuff, and they can't make a pre-Episode VII release date for it so their planning to save it for a later time.

Regardless, I personally think the absolute latest we'll have to wait is for some kind of new uber-set after Episode IX comes out.

I honestly could tolerate the first two movies-- the alterations are annoying a bit but they don't ruin the movies. But Jedi... I just couldn't do it. That movie got flat-out destroyed, IMO. The last alterations Lucas made to that film was the reason I decided against buying the set.

Maybe at this point they are holding them back until around the time E7 hits Blu-ray for the first time... maybe? Or Episode 8. I don't know.

I just hope it still happens. 4K releases should be a given but I really hope we get the UOT. The changes on the current Blu-ray releases are really annoying at times.

That's why rumors are absolutely false and should always be dismissed as a hoax.

That's a plausible idea.

Who knows what's going on behind the scenes.

ROTJ was definitely the most affected by the changes imo.

Jedi Rocks, Darth Vader yelling no, Hayden Christiansen as force ghost Anakin Skywalker.

It's completely ridiculous.

With that being said though I do prefer the new ending music and the removal of Emperor Palpatine's "slugs" was a great touch up.

A new box set to tie in with the home video release of TFA is plausible.

What convinced me that it might not be hoax is the fact that it was confirmed that new 4K scans of the films had been made and the fact that Disney are quite good at listening to what fans want.

We know some kind of 4K work has been done on the originals although not known which version.

I believe the final nail in the coffin will be the lack of the UOT during the next available release on physical media. In other words, if Disney re-releases the SW movies on blu-ray in the next couple of years and they're omitted then, I say that's the end of the speculation.

You strike while the iron's hot, and they weren't announced at the recent SW convention panel, nor today, May 4th. And, the digital releases last month are only the special editions. If they were planning an eventual release, they might not have released those digital versions. People would cry foul later this year if the UOT was released after they paid $90.00.

And that's just how Lucas wants you to look at them. I won't give him that satisfaction though. I saw them in the theatre when they were first released, so I know better.

I really don't think there can ever be a true nail in the coffin on this one, there will always be the option to make money by selling the original versions of the Star Wars movies, whenever the people in the position to make that money decide to do so, as long as physical media is something that's produced.

You're telling me I live in a world where I own a wonderful Blu-ray of Don't Go in the Woods Alone! and there's no hope for Star Wars.

they just released them digitally everywhere for the first time at $20 each. Makes sense to release blurays again in some way closer to the new film's home release.

I hope you're right. I'm not a big fan of sets.
