The original negatives for 4-6 were photochemically cleaned and restored before being reconformed as the Special Edition cut in 1997. They were transferred in HD for the DVD releases in 2004, and it's those masters which we've been seeing on TV/disc/etc ever since.

As if the Luke/Leia relationship wasn't weird enough already

I don’t buy that at all. It’s an interesting theory and execution, but the main error in calculations is the time to Cloud City. 6.72 hours? WTF?!?! Where did they get that from? The Hyperdrive wasn’t working, and Han says, “It’s pretty far but I think we can make it.” This is a ship built for long distance travelling and he’s thinking they “might” make it? I’ve always thought the trip took at least a couple weeks, roughly the same amount of time Luke is training on Dagobah. Falcon’s hyperdive isn’t working, Luke’s X-Wing is, Slave-1’s is. Boba Fett figures out where they are headed, gets there well in advance of them. How could all that have happened in 7 hours? No way. I once made up a rough timeline and while 4 and 6 are both over a few days, ESB I always thought would have been a few weeks.

That's one of the unspoken things about Empire, the timeline's all ****ed up but because it's so great otherwise we just kinda ignore that part of it.

At sublight speeds you'd most likely be looking at a matter of years to get to another system. Unless Hoth and Bespin are somehow part of the same overall system, maybe some kind of multi-star deal, but I think if that were the case Bespin should have come up in the Imperials' discussion of Hoth early in the film and it probably wouldn't have come up later the way it did, almost as an afterthought. I think it's better to assume that at some point they were able to tinker with the ship enough to rig it for a "hail mary" short jump but that it would be unable to get them beyond a certain range without unacceptable risk. Even though different technical reasons were given, the Falcon in TESB and the Naboo ship in TPM were functionally in the same situation. In both cases they had to find a safe port within a certain limited range.

In Legacy EU starships were equipped with significantly slower backup hyperdrives.

NERDS!!!!!!!!

Quite overthinking it and trying to infuse Star Trek into Star Wars. RWAR!!!

It is Sci-Fi Fantasy set in a Galaxy, Far Far Away... The rules may well be very different.

In seriousness I have always pondered the timeline issue and at the end of the day I concede it up to the requisites of Drama trumping logistics.

Best regards,
KvE

Episode 1 is a DNR massacre too, even worse.

The films (4-6) were 2k mastered in 1997, the color timing is wrong, blacks are extremely crushed, the DVDs offer almost the same quality except the compression is a bit better. Check on caps-a-holic.com.

Lowry spent a lot of time de-graining the films I fear and if you look closely you can see that they worked with filters, sometimes cartoonish filters to smooth everything and make look "better", fake grain to give the illusion of a film like structure, they even froze the grain in certain scenes, terrible.

The Indiana Jones films look much better in comparison (more details, better colors, etc.).
Er, they are fairly old transfers (circa 2004 actually, if I recall) but if you can't see they wipe the floor with the dvds you need to visit an optometrist. Color timing and Lowry tinkering may be problematic but in terms of detail they are about as good as you can expect from 70s/80s scope films.

Unless you subscribe to the Multiverse Theory, then all galaxies are in the same Universe, and thus theoretically follow the same rules. So it wouldn't matter what galaxy in the Universe that you're in, gravity and space-time would be the same.

I got a Blu-Ray player three years ago and the quality-jump is very noticeable, but I never thought that the Star Wars BRs could look THAT much better (I knew they'd look BETTER, just not too much better).

When I was at Walmart last week, they were playing the Blu-Ray Disc of Empire Strikes Back, and I found myself standing there for, like, a half-hour just watching in awe. Star Wars is definitely going to be an exception to my rule. I'll keep my DVDs (since they have the theatrical cuts), but the quality-jump definitely warrants the double-dip in my opinion, and that's not something I say often about films I already own on DVD.
I understand not wanting to upgrade your DVDs to Blu-ray Disc, but to buy new stuff on DVD when there's a BD option... If that was me, I'd feel like I'm throwing my money away.

For one thing, the scratch resistant coating on BDs means they will theoretically have a longer shelf life. Plus the fact that you're (usually) getting better picture and audio. Why would you still buy DVD?

Unless of course the fictional fantastical universe in question has individuals who can wield godlike powers with numerous sentient beings living in close proximity to each other that intergalactic commerce is viable with lightspeed+ means of transport; all sums to refuting the premise that our laws of physics are even applicable.

If that is true, that is incredible.

I teach a film class at a high school and made it a point to only show the original theatrical version to my students (it was released on a limited edition bonus disc of the DVD years ago). Most of them had never seen it before!

The detail is somewhat better than the DVDs although more subtle in some scenes. I think new scans will definitely be an improvement in this regard. Also, the current masters have some EE baked in which I think this was used in an attempt to give more sharpness. The Indy movies are far superior transfers, overall.

If true it's good news. Sounds like a Disney move....release all six current versions along with a repackage of the saga. Then release TFA after the movie. Then release a box set containing TFA as well. Then for one more cash grab, release the UOT last. Like sheep to the slaughter. LOL

Maybe it will be a UHD BD only release! Everybody would buy a UHD BD player and the format would take off!
