Maybe 40th anniversary or something. LOL Just like waiting for the UOT.
Supposedly the original master tapes for "Lapti Nek" have gone missing, but I've never seen anything to confirm that rumor.

Check out the screencap comparisons. There's really very little difference at all.

They are just setting it up for the next "Complete Saga" boxset with Episode VII for some of the fans to then go buy.

The Blu-rays really look like a 720p to 1080p upscale, especially some scenes on Endor in Episode 6 are unsharp and edges look strange, jaggy & combing, like a really bad upscale.

The slipbox isn't as good a quality as the previous set. It's thinner and flimsier, although I like the artwork on this one a lot better. Don't really feel like skimming through pages upon pages of this thread, so can someone break down the differences between this release and the one prior? They both have the 40 hours of bonus features, 90 minute spoofs, etc. Is this a remaster or something?

It's identical to the old set with the exception of the case and artwork.

There's about a three minute stretch during the Endor scenes which looks like an upscale, yes.

Yeah, just a quick cash grab since the new movie is coming in a few months. Like you said though, the artwork is better. And i like the new case better because i always had trouble trying to get the discs out of the sleeves of the old set.

Not really.

At least, no more than Star Wars on home media always is. Once they make it to a format, you can pretty much expect a reissue/repackage/etc. every other year or so.

Yes but any time a new movie comes out, they use that as an opportunity to reissue the old stuff. And i get it. It may be someone that is new to the franchise can now get an "up-to-date" version of the movies. But for those that have every release up to that point, it's just another way to get them to buy again.

There's nothing "up to date" about this release. In fact, it's as dated as it gets.

Really? I knew the master tapes for that other Max Rebo song, "Galactic Dance Blast", went missing but had no idea it happened to Lapti Nek as well. That's unfortunate if so.

Eh, nothing that forces those people to get every release, so I can't really feel bad for them if they feel like they must own this repackage just to scratch that completist itch.

Guys I wanted to buy the complete saga for the longest but now see that a repackeged version will be coming so I might as well wait a couple more days. I was close to buying the digital versions yesterday but holy rip off gods each movie is 20$ a pop.

No it is not. IF it was a cash grab it would have something new to entice you to buy it. It does not. Anyone who already owns it has it. It is purely for the people who don't. And that is a LOT of people still.

No, because you'd have to be an idiot to buy again. When you buy a novel in a bookstore (for those of you who still read), when it's re-issued a year or two later with a different cover or even with a different foreword, do you buy it again? When paperbacks are issued with five different covers, each in a different color, do you purchase all five?

There are two reasons for these re-issues when the discs are exactly the same: one is that frequently the re-issue packaging is less expensive to produce and they don't want to do a reprint on the original more-expensive packaging. The other is that when something is re-issued, it gets publicity, it frequently gets special placement in what's left of physical retail, it gets placed on the home page of e-commerce sites and it gets reviewed. All of that leads to mindshare and sales.

No one is expected to buy it again. They'll love you if you're anal enough to do so, but they don't expect you to. Completists and those with severe anal-retentive disorders aside, of course.
